Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave label has been busy laying down foundations for the past twelve months. The run-away success of their debut single “We Do What We Want” is far from the entire story. Much of the last year has been spent “getting their hands dirty”; nurturing new talent (such as Boxia, whose “Point Of No Return” hit set summer stages alight), developing and establishing an events concept (via WATB parties in Manchester, London, Glasgow and Ibiza), and gathering like-minded artists and their music together to support the labels burgeoning release schedule. 

We Are The Brave was set up as a community. At the core of this enterprise is the spirit of collaboration. A partnership between like-minded creatives. An alliance between artists and fans. A hub for sharing ideas and for working together. Nowhere has this spirit been most apparent than between the growing partnership between Alan Fitzpatrick and Darius Syrossian. Individually, they are both figureheads of brands and headliners in their own right, however, both are open-minded enough to realize that they are stronger together than they are competing for every inch of space within an increasingly overcrowded market.   

“It’s great to see how Alan operates. It's normal for him to be a resident for a party like Do Not Sleep in Ibiza but at the same time pushing his own We Are The Brave brand and instead of this creating a conflict, he manages to create a win-win for all sides. He is such a down-to-earth and humble guy but he makes unreal music and brings just as much passion when he DJs.”   

Indeed, it is that same unpretentious sentiment that is at the core of Syrossian’s “Made For Manchester”, as Syrossian explains, “I was a weekly resident in Manchester from 2008 to 2015 and the city means the world to me as a built a strong connection with the crowd there. I don’t get to play the city as often as I’d like now due to my touring schedule, so I wanted to make a track for the city, one that I know has my signature sound but also an emotive feel to show home much love I have for Manchester”. 

And Syrossian’s thoughts on Fitzpatrick’s remix? “I love the fact that Alan can bring old skool rave sounds back into his music while keeping it underground. My original is quite heavy in parts and the breakdown is very main room, but Alan has put a perfect twist on the original and together the two tracks make for a perfect package”

Young Irish-producer Rebūke continues his rapid ascent to the top with two original productions on Hot Creations, primed and ready for the dancefloor.

Rebūke recalls being worried that Along Came Polly may have been perceived as being “a bit too weird”, but once it caught the attention of Jamie Jones, there was no stopping it. He says that the hype surrounding this EP “is something I’ve never experienced before...and it always get a great reaction”.

On Along Came Polly, Rebūke showcases his innate ability to craft a weirdly, wonderful slice of techno. On the B-side, Rolo is a much housier affair, weaving together a bouncier bassline and sultry vocal stab.

The alias of Reuben Keeney, Rebūke, has only been in business for a short while, but his efforts have already proved to be fruitful. He has garnered support from the likes of Nic Fanciulli and released on labels including Saved and DFTD, as well as having a successful club night under his belt, where highly regarded names such as Camelphat, Darius Syrossian, Ejeca and Huxley have all played.

Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave imprint continues to blossom into one of the most prominent labels in the industry today, as the latest release sees the founder link up with Grammy Award Winning duo CamelPhat on a pair of massive techno tracks via the 'Kona' EP. Here Mixmag reveals the premiere of the EP's title track, a euphoric and anthemic peak-time techno cut packed with relentless energy. 

Alan Fitzpatrick had this to say on the new collaboration: “It’s always exciting for me to work with new artists and people that I think can bring a different take on things in the studio. As individual artists our styles are fairly different, and that always sparks some magic in the studio. This time round it was techno magic, in the form of 'Kona' and 'Liberation'"

The 'Kona' EP is set for release April 19.

Prolific disco/house producer James Curd is perhaps one of the undersung heroes of the scene. With hundreds of production credits to his name on every label worth its salt from DFA Records to Classic Music Company to Permanent Vacation to Lumberjacks In Hell — and of course, Exploited — he has serious skin in the game. It’s finally time for his debut album to make its mark on the world, rounding up 14 of his finest moments to date for Exploited and packaging them up into one joyous blend.
“‘Taken All This Time’ is a catalog of music that stays true to my life growing up in my critical formative years in Chicago” he explains. “I used to make tracks from beginning to end on an MPC2000. I had a studio in my room that was set up on a door that was held up by two overturned trash cans. If I was recording on the mic I had to shut my windows because I lived on the third floor above 90/94. Sometimes I would get WGCI bleeding into my speakers while I was trying to work. It was the best of times. I worked at a record store called Supreme most days. Then I would work on music till late and head out to the club. I had a residency with Derrick Carter, Gene Farris and Diz. I made so much music — especially in the brutal winters.”
You wouldn’t know that much of this record was made in the depths of winter, given the warm, balmy vibe that surrounds much of it. With his magical synth wizardry cutting against jazzy keys, disco/funk basslines, and sublime vocals, it’s a beautiful mix of sounds that is at home on the dancefloor as on the home stereo. Each track contains elements built on his MPC, with all keys, vintage synths, guitars and bass played live. “ In a time where so much music is pieced together by sample packs and drum loops this album is created brick by brick.... or beat by beat. Every keyboard sound was played on an actual keyboard in my studio. Guitars and bass were played in.”
The album draws its influences from ‘70s disco, ‘80s boogie and ‘90s deep house in equal measure, serving as a musical document of Curd’s upbringing. Beautiful vocals are provided by a diverse cast of singers and rappers, including Bear Who? Luke Million, Likasto, Natasha Lillith and KE, with other collaborative moments featuring Fred Everything and Karmon.
The prolific producer has previously worked with James Murphy for a release on his DFA Records label, and works on many film, TV and video game score projects, including for the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ series and 50 Cent’s show ‘The Oath’. But right now, it’s all about this beautiful collection of tracks, providing a milestone in his career that he will be able to look back on very proudly in years to come.
Single and Album artworks were done by James' friend Cody Hudson who is a Chicago based artist known for his graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. and for the production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Cody's design aesthetic is part urban modernism, and part organic visual deconstruction.
His graphic work and paintings have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), New Image Art (LA), Rocket Gallery (Tokyo), The Lazy Dog (Paris), & Andrew Rafacz (Chicago).
