Over the past years I have always been fascinated with recreating the sounds of the ocean in any way possible.  The ocean itself has always inspired me with so much life to compose from and ideas to take away.  For this piece I wanted to explore a story about the ocean.  The way of life it shows, from calm waters to stormy seas.  Inspired by Ravel's, “Une barque sur l'ocean” that tells the story of a boat going from calm waters to stormy seas and back.  For this piece I wanted to show the waters itself, how they felt as if they were heard from a piano.

Each and every volt of power is a musical melody playing quietly in the background. Every cable surges electricity throughout the line. This piece is a musical representation of electricity—of how it quietly plays in the background of our lives—the way it maintains our devices and charges them, only for it to die when they lose the electricity. I wanted to recreate this electrical push and pull effect with musical stops to give it an instantaneous feeling.  Recreating the sounds of electricity to direct the piece.

Directing Electricity

For the time Calvin has been writing, he is drawn to all genres and fresh ideas. Calvin is inspired from various types of music like classical, pop, and electronic.  What inspires him the most is music with atonal elements, pushing the barriers of what we know music is.  He uses atonal elements to push his compositions and create depth in his music.  By this he strives for meaning and depth in his music, writing with an intent to make you think and feel.  He is still always looking for the next idea and a story to tell.
