Light Year - Come Together

Grasscut return with the second single from their forthcoming debut album. Continuing their theme of exploring the essence of our culture, on “Muppet” Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair deal with losing your ability to communicate, something Phillips describes as “a very English kind of frustration.”

“I was talking to a bunch of people having a conversation none of us could be bothered to have,” Phillips explains. “And I could hear someone gossiping about a mutual friend behind me – I couldn’t resist pretending to text while actually recording them.” While this may not make Phillips your ideal friend, it results in great music. “I wrote the song while walking home and recorded the vocal straight into my phone. Musically it had to go from a pop song to total self-destruction. I remember Marcus ramming a drumstick into a cymbal, jamming the stick into a tom and bowing the cymbal furiously while I was yelling at the end. We really went there.”

Remix duties are ably dealt with by Nathan Fake, the estimable Norfolkian who can throw in everything from next-wave computer rock techno to vertiginous ambient pilgrimages, or in this case, come up with something in between. The package is rounded out by the ecstatic, electro-psych sweep of “Meadowhall At Last”.

Already acclaimed by Tom Robinson as “making genuinely daring music that still remains an accessible and enjoyable listen,” Grasscut are set to release one of the oddest, most listenable and strangely uplifting albums of the year.

Nathan Fake and Wesley Matsell's new Cambria Instruments label already got us salivating with a split release between the two Border Community-affiliated artists in August. NF's track 'Black Drift' was intriguing and restrained, a subtle return to the fray after two years without releases – but now we have 'Nuuk' from his first full solo Cambria Instruments EP, and he's really cut loose. It's a stunner, somehow both fragile and nails-hard, and easily as spine-tingling as 'The Sky Was Pink'. It's good to have him back.

In light of Borealis' debut album "Voidness" two collections of 4 remixes each will be coming out both digitally and as limited edition transparent/black splatter 12"s.

"Seraphim" presents four visions of Nightfall, one of the strongest pieces of emotional music, leaving little to no reference of the original, album version.

Melodic techno legend Dominik Eulberg kicks things off with a seemingly never-ending 'anthem' rendition of the original. Liar delivers a stunning take which is impossible to place into any one genre while also acting as a proper introduction of his subtle, highly eclectic trademark sound. On the B-side, Jesse Somfay (aka Borealis) turns his own work into a flashback-generator for anyone who has a soft spot for epic, early 00s trance. There's no better way to close things off than through a heartwrenching piano cover, courtesy of Ben Lukas Boysen (aka Hecq).

My inspiration for these remixes was to play with this concept of opposite spaces, and tailor it to how I am trying to develop my work, personally. 

Spaces can completely change perception of sound. Opposites seem to inspire me: I am as fascinated with an anechoic chamber where all acoustic reflections are non-existent – as I am with a highly reverberant space, such as an auditorium or hall. 

As an artist who's known more for writing music suited for dark spaces, I find myself battling against the expectations that surround this context frequently. The Dark reinterpretation is my familiar ground; the Light is essentially a rejection of that.
