Letting go of the pretence of perfection, accepting that life will have both dark and light and that harmony plays off the balance of the two. This is the place (if we are lucky) we come to once enough time has passed for reflection to really take on a deeper meaning.

Blossoming again has come from this journey we call life but not the perfect type for none exist and nor should they, for we need the things that challenge us to grow. Especially now that we are living longer, the window of opportunity no longer opens only to the young. The seeds of change have been planted so I reject the box of convention and dare to blossom again.

The lyrics are about questioning the concept of freedom within the confines of capitalism. By using emotive words such as gypsy to stir imagery that connects to the idea of freedom. I invite the listener in on an emotional level. Even jarring imagery of beauty and devastation side by side. "Where do the wild birds sing, when all is dead and gone." I seek to illicit a response.

What this song is about is bringing into the general consciousness the fact that our societies are still predominately organised within the *realm of a patriarchal system of doing things. Women may have won equal rights in some places but we are yet to win equal treatment.

Our modern version of the patriarchal system may sound different from the past, however this only acts to silence any challenge to its power. With the framing of deceptive language that creates an illusion of equality rather than a reality of equality. We are confronted by this illusion everyday that passes and fails to break through the wall that is the gender pay gap.

Never Ending Story - being released on the 19th of August on Living in a world of silence EP - The Last Folk Singer

The poetic style of lyrics for Never-ending story were inspired by the documentary Dirty Wars, that follow journalist Jeremy Scahill on his mission to understand the “twisted logic, a logic with no end” that is war. I reflected on the long human history of war in the context of the rise and fall of empires, after all this is  why they are fought, whether we realise it or not.

The story begins with the older understanding of war we were taught when I was in primary school, that is that there are no winners. This is where the lines “Everyone has lost, Everybody lost” came from. From there I moved onto the modern day by using a story told in the documentary that of an innocent sixteen year old American boy Abdulrahman Awlaki assassinated by a drone attack. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be Barack Obama sitting at the presidential desk deciding to sign the order to end the life of a child. I wanted to convey that no one should ever be given this power and this is how I came to write the lines, “Who signed the order of God” and “Who took the light. 

Patriotism is explored through the idea that peace does not reside where flags divide, we must find “common ground”as I put it in the final verse. I eventually ended where I began in the never-ending cycle of the rise and fall of empires and the war they wage against us all.  For war has not changed merely our understanding or rather misunderstandings of it as a necessary evil, but it remains as it also has been just a place where everyone has lost.

Originally from Byron Bay and currently living in Melbourne, Camille made her musical debut with the haunting ‘A little gypsy song’ followed up by the feminist anthem ’…Because I was born a girl’, both receiving a warm reception from radio stations and publications.
