METODI HRISTOV: Live at Egg London mix + interview

After his set on May 23rd, we caught up with Bulgarian based Metodi Hristov, talking about his exclusive mix recorded live at Egg, what he got up to whilst here in London, and what to expect from him in the not to distant future.

Hi Metodi, how are you today - what have you been up to since your set at Egg? 

 Hellooo :D I'm happy! After my gig at Egg London I traveled back home and started to work on a remix for Noir Music and the weekend after I was on a little tour in Russia. 

The mix is great and it was recorded right here at Egg! What was the idea behind your set that night?  

Thank you! It may sound trite, but the idea was to show myself through the music, like on every one of my gigs. I like the variety and always try to mix the tracks very fast and not to bore the people with long similarly sounding phrases. I’m also always trying to show a lot unheard and unique sounding tunes, tunes that you can't find on soundcloud or beatport. The main idea was to show something really different :)  

Are there any tunes in the mix that people should be looking out for? 

 I'm very proud with the fact, that I always play 50 - 60 % of my own music in my mixes including a lot unreleased material. In the mix you can hear upcoming tunes for labels like Defected, Terminal M, Noir Music, Toolroom Rec., Deeperfect Rec., Knee Deep, Material, Suruba, King Street, Kinetika, Be one Rec. and more. So stay tuned, big things are coming up very soon! :)

How did you find Egg more generally? 
Egg is one of the best clubs that I've ever played! The atmosphere, the crowd and the entire Egg crew… It was an amazing night, maybe because there were a lot of friends with me. It was really the perfect night for me!

Did you do anything else fun while you were in London? 

Yes, we had a lot of fun. I was travelling with my girlfriend and my brother and I also met so many friends. We had a really good time in London.

Finally what plans have you got for summer in terms of releases, gigs and personally?

I’m really looking forward to my South American tour in August. I'm going to stay about a month there and I'm very excited about it. Also many gigs in Europe and Asia are coming up, a lot releases for the labels that I’ve mentioned before and a lot collaborations with some of my favorite artists like Shosho, Gallya , Stefano Noferini and many more. But the biggest thing that I’m looking forward is the launch of my first label, together with Gallya and my agent Marin in the end of this year.

A deluge of heavy-hitting support from some of the most legendary titans in dance music marks the return of award-winning Canadian producer Glenn Morrison to the dance floor. 

After a considerable hiatus away from the EDM limelight working as a songwriter and producer for Sony Records and Universal Music Group – in the process bagging Billboard #1 singles and multiple radio awards / certified multi-platinum sales – Morrison is back with brand new long-player ‘Into The Deep’, introduced earlier this week via two double A-side EPs. 

A pure passion project for Morrison, ‘Into The Deep’ is an exquisitely produced piece of work, a true journey of stereosonic discovery. Boasting a sound reminiscent of the critically-acclaimed ‘Northern Exposure’ compilations, Morrison brings an intelligent, thoughtful vibe back to dance music that many feel has been lacking in recent years. From dark, driving, progressive cuts to dreamy, trance-like singles; from throbbing, grinding, tribal tones through to hypnotic, undulating, bass-heavy pieces, this is a world class producer indulging himself and us in sound – doing what he loves and doing it very, very well. 

Standout tracks on the album that premiered earlier this week include ‘Hang Tough’ – where Morrison uses John Harris’ poem ‘The Gospel According to John’ to tell the sordid tale of a drugged out prostitute turning over a normal man to the same hollow lifestyle – and ‘Another Dimension’, a dark and intense build up of sounds swelling through cascading melodies into an eruption of syncopated synth and grand piano riffs that take the track’s sentiment in a completely unexpected direction. Titular track ‘Into The Deep’ lingers delicately on the palate, Morrison taking his time to draw the listener in and out of his creation almost as if we need his sounds to breathe. A little stronger and a little darker, ‘Bumblebee’s driving elements of techno and chugging minimal house underpin deceptively simplistic top layers making it perfect for those mid-set progressions in the early morning hours or, as Morrison suggests, “Space Ibiza terrace early night kind of vibe.”

“I needed to get back to writing these instrumental pieces where the riffs are the vocal lines, and the vibe is a sort of hypnotic mysticism mixed with late night mind bending chasers,’ Morrison continues. ‘‘Into the Deep’ is a celebration of forward thinking progressive house music; a dash of eccentric and brash synth melodies juxtaposed with bright, uppity grand piano chords and warped out arpeggiations that I hope will light up both dance floors and late night music sessions the world over.”

Vivid & OneBrotherGrimm sind die Hauptakteure hinter dem Projekt Royal Clubnights, welches in den letzten Jahren die Partyszene im Raum Thüringen ordentlich aufgewühlt hat. Nach ihrem Set auf der Red Bull Stage beim SonneMondSterne Festival 2012 ließ der Erfolg nicht lange auf sich warten und so starteten die beiden Partygaranten in der Clubszene ordentlich durch. Mit ihren satten House-Sounds bringen sie jede Party zum Kochen und schaffen es immer wieder das Publikum in ihren Bann zu ziehen. Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Dj’s sind die beiden seit geraumer Zeit ebenfalls als Produzenten vertreten.
Im Jahr 2014 folgte dann ihre erste eigene EP "Can Feel It", welche auf einem renomierten Berliner Label mit Remixen von Marcapasos, Vamos Art und TonkBerlin erschien. Desweiteren sind sie seit Mai 2015 Mitglied der Hamburger Plattenfirma Ton liebt Klang, wo sie auch ihre zweite EP "Jump" veröffentlicht haben. Also, genug um den heißen Brei geredet - Musik ab!

Sebastian Mullaert is well known for his work as one half of the highly respected Swedish duo Minilogue, responsible for killer releases for the likes of Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels and Wagon Repair, alongside breathtaking live shows as a solo outfit as well as their joint live act with Matthew Jonson.

Working from the idilic setting of the mystical Swedish forest, Sebastian Mullaert has has been making serious waves on his solo artist journey, lending his signature hypnotic sound to labels like Mule Musiq, Drumcode, Minus, Kontra-Musik and Ovum. His one of a kind spellbinding live show is illuminating the world’s finest stages such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Concrete - Paris, Fabric - London, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Black Market - NYC to name a few and can be witnessed on his recent Boiler Room and XLR8R sessions. 

At nearly 13 tantric minutes long, ‘Windmaker’ bubbles and teases with freestyle keys with an almost Middle Eastern flavour, as Mullaert plays snake charmer to his machines, coaxing out deft melodies, airy cymbals and on point beats and percussion.  It’s a track to completely get lost in, crafted with fine sonics and a gloss that only an artist like Mullaert can achieve with ease.

The enigmatic Ukranian producer, Vakula, is drafted in to give a re-interpretation of ‘Windmaker’; edgy phased stabs puncture the minimal techno beat, bouncing and reverberating off the kick drum to create a glorious wall of dubby sound that compliments the original mix a treat.  Vakula has always impressed with his creative and original music for labels like Firecracker, Dekmantel and his own Leleka imprint, so it’s a privilege to have him remix on Hypercolour.

Mark Reeve is a name synonymous within techno, having released on labels such as Drumcode, Cocoon and Bedrock in recent years. These releases have served as a platform for him to tour the world as a DJ, playing esteemed festivals like Awakenings, Tomorrowland and B My Lake. 

2017 see’s him return to Truesoul with ‘New Path EP’, comprising of two blistering tracks in ‘New Path’ and ‘Acceso’. Both tracks are teeming with dark sounds and heavy textures and are typical of Reeve. The title track ’New Path’ is a homage to his groove laden past, calling on big bass lines and sweeping percussion that takes you on a ride through the track. ‘Acceso’ is more of a rolling affair with a thumping beat and some divine synth work. These are certified floor fillers and given the Adam Beyer stamp of approval.
