BASIC TRANSCRIPT:
Pray for Paris by Westside Gunn. Gunn finds himself most comfortable rapping over boom-bap and sampled beats, and this album is a great first listen for many who are new to him. Features are INSANE, with Tyler, The Creator, Joey Bada$$, Conway the Machine, Benny the Butcher (Griselda Crew), Wale,   Freddie Gibbs, Roc Marciano, and Boldy James. I listed them all just to emphasize that the features are absurd. And yet, Westside Gunn is never overshadowed and is able to stand ground against many of these higher profile lyricists and artists, even giving better performances than the feature on many songs. Gunn really is entering a more luxurious musical era, boasting about his wealth and even introducing the album through an art auction. The album cover further displays this glamour, for it is created by designer Virgil Abloh ($50 donation guy lol).  Virgil actually played Gunn during fashion week, so that’s where a lot of this luxurious influence comes from. Personal favorites: “Claiborne Kick” = The Alchemist, Gunn, and Boldy James.... crazy. Gunn is pitched down, but he still sounds almost velvety while abrupt adlibs interrupt his smooth flow. Then... silence when Boldy James starts, to highlight the straight-up story he’s spitting. Listen real close to this song while picking up on Alchemists pure producing genius. “Shawn vs. Flair” = Westside Gunn rapping over DJ Premier. Westside Gunn boasts a lot in this song while giving off a vintage vibe. The vinyl cuts and scratches, along with the tags are perfectly embedded between Gunns storytelling. More Favs: “George Bondo”, “$500 Ounces”, “Party wit Pop Smoke prod. by Tyler, The Creator”, “LE Djoliba”. Least fav: “Euro Step”. Overall, solid 8.8/10.
