Recorded in the dead of summer in a large open warehouse space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn – "Nest" is an album of growth, openness, and change.  Pulling influence from the multi-songwriter, multi-lead-vocalist approach of Fleetwood Mac’s quintessential albums "Rumours" and "Tusk," "Nest" is an eclectic mix of songs, where different band members are in the spotlight at different times.  Energized by the raw emotional outpouring and humanness of the Stones, "Exile on Main St.," songs like “Waiting for the Weekend” and “Gloria” burst forth with an undeniable honesty in everything from lyrical content, to vocal delivery, to the natural way in which band recorded each track - live, all at once, and all together with the 95 degree August heat sweltering through the warehouse.  There are bits of Pop, Motown, Garage, Blues, Surf, Soul, Folk and Psychedelia scattered throughout "Nest."  There is also a sense of experimentation - of shedding light on new forms of art.  Horn sections of out sync with each other.  Vocals recorded in reverse and used as atmospheric layers.  And buried under synth textures, a looped field recording from an Occupy Wall St. protest in New York City serves as the backdrop and actual backbeat of the song “Notice Me.”  Backwords never intends to stick to a formula, and that couldn’t be more evident here on "Nest."
    
Certain band members have entered their 30s.  One recently had a kid.  They no longer live in a communal house with a basement recording studio.  Rents have skyrocketed and Brooklyn itself isn’t what it was 6 or 7 years ago when the concept of “Backwords” first entered these guys’ minds.  As the world around Backwords continues to change, the band couldn’t help but create a timestamp that does not necessarily feel like it belongs in the era it was created.  Or does it?
  
Remember when you could buy a slice of pizza at any spot for $1?  Remember when the Salvation Army was where you went to get your clothes and there were no J.Crews or Urban Outfitters in Brooklyn?  Remember the original Freddy’s Bar before it got torn down and the Barclays center was erected? "Nest" calls upon these times.  And there can be no better way to describe this album other than by thinking of it as “Rock & Roll.”  All in all, Backwords is OK with accepting any connotations that come along with such a tag.  So perhaps for the first time, this band created a Rock & Roll album in "Nest."     


03 - Gloria

With splashes of afro-pop and staccato rhythm, beams of 90s fuzz and smears of 60s psychedelic, Spirit Plate (self-titled) is a record of nervous joy and unbound energy. On this 9 song fruit-pop of a record you'll find everything from frantic guitar spazzing ("Why, Why, Why Why,") to cascading saxophones ("Hole in Your Heart") to bird-like flute flutters ("Broken Prose"), to good old classic rock structures ("Try & Try to Be").

Brian Russ delivers straightforward, no-effects-needed vocals in a jarring, yet poignant manner. Brad Connolley plucks out melodic bass lines while delivering backing falsetto vocals that sometimes howls but always know when to whisper. Chris Ciao pounds out beats that can stray and add tensions, but then sits in the pocket and lets the songs cook in the sun.

Lyrics like "lately things all seem the same / here comes another hurricane" are straight up apocalyptic in their poetry. Yet there is a tenderness here in fragments such as "through the rhythms of the night / through the darkest part of fear / a child breaks down and cries / a mother wipes away her tears." This band, as fast paced and as bombastic as they can be, also knows how to slow things down and get you to that lucid state of daydreaming, where everything just is. On the last track on the record, "Try & Try to Be," they do a great job reminding us never to forget: "spirits are everywhere.."

Well if this album is indeed a summer creamsicle with both tart and smooth flavors coming through, the trick then is, can you digest it all before it melts?

All the way from Seoul, North Korea, the ex-pats, Nice Legs, bring us their first single, specially cut on a very limited run of clear 7" vinyl.  Get one before they are gone.

01 Nice Legs - "Mighty Three"

Inspired by New York City's rapid pace of change, decay and rebirth, and the dichotomy NYC presents of arriving at tranquility though chaos and clutter, "Youth Moose" is a complex collage of sound, delivered through simple, gritty, succinct songs.

On "Youth Moose," Spirit Plate reacts to New York City as well as our greater globe through many sharp lenses. To initially gain inspiration for songs, the band closely observed and cataloged street art tattooed to Brooklyn buildings, some of which were scrawled decades ago and others part of the modern resurgence of murals, tags, and visible art everywhere (hence the title "Youth Moose," which in itself is a reference to a commonly seen NYC tag). As a result, there is as much of a nostalgic aspect to this record as there is forward-thinking. Songwriter Brian Russ has personally been living in, playing shows and recording music in Brooklyn for the past 12 years and "Youth Moose" has many reflections to offer from someone who can now safely call Brooklyn his home.

The record unfolds like a tarot card reading. It brings out your past (from the song "Everything's a Joke;" "do you remember when we would shoplift CDs?"). Examines your present (from the song "Open Automatic;" "I feel loved by a machine") and makes some predictions for your future (from the title track - "the times have surely changed on me, but hey man that's ok, cause I ain't gonna leave.").

This is a record also offering unavoidable political statements. And even though the songs were written a year or more before our presidential election results came in, they tell the tale of what was already and about to unfold, with lyrics peppered throughout reminding us of the dangerous and toxic times we live in:

"Every phone call, every conversation traced..."
"I can't sleep, if 'I can't breathe' is not a reason to back the fuck off."
"Every witness can't be sure what they saw..."
"All across the USA temperatures are rising, ain't nobody dancing in the streets, mostly they're just hiding and afraid."

Recorded with no budget, mostly live in a tiny warehouse rehearsal space in the industrial section of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, the base of "Youth Moose" is full of gravel and grime and honestly captures the vibe of 6 people coming together to bring an artistic vision into fruition - right in the moment.

The raw tracks from the warehouse were taken into Brian Russ' home studio and meticulously mixed and mastered, with the goal of bringing a polish and a sense of clarity to the dizzying array of live mics, bleed, room noise and unbalanced tracks. Being a dad with two small kids and a day job, Brian carved away at this record on nights and weekends. An hour here, an hour there, and slowly but steadily, Brian paid attention to every detail possible to bring out the final mix. "Youth Moose" is a real labor of love. Created by New York artists who have no choice but to make music in order to face this world, wake up and go forth every morning.

Paying homage to visionary New York City artist such as The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, and Swans, Spirit Plate shines a light on its past and hopes to present a lasting statement for the future in "Youth Moose."
