1990 - Proto-trance

The first of a series of mixes that charts the evolution of trance, from it's roots in the early 90s to the world domination of the turn of the century.  This one takes in some KLF tracks from 1988 and 1989.  A very different sound from the sound of modern trance but the building blocks are there - the hypnotic rhythms,  the sweeping synths.

Rough & Ready [Modern Trance]

This mix was created for the /r/classicstrance comp, the prompt encouraging one or more rare tracks (hence the 'under the table') pre-2008 trance with no other restrictions. Freedom! I've been itching to make a classics prog set for a while anyway. This set leans in to that classic late 90s prog sound, although it reaches in to the EE era as well. Journey prog was always my favorite and likely always likely will be. Shame the genre is nearly non-existent in 2023. I wanted this mix to be dreamy and a bit more emotive than some of the mixes I've made lately. This mix really takes its time as well, so sit back for the ride. There are some footnotes to explain the rarity or composition path for some of the tracks below. 128-137bpm. Enjoy.

I would not usually dissect such pristine tracks, but I noticed a few years ago that Lost Tribe's 'Under the Red Sea' and Darey's infamous 'Wizards of the Sonic' Remix were made from the same ingredients. Had to cook up a new recipe with them. This is a longer version with a remaster.
***** 2023 update to an outro remix. This update has more elements of the red sea and extended.
****** I thought I could use the Solarstone Pure Intro as it is 2011 remix of a 1999 track, but alas, I missed a rules clarification for modern booties only. This hybrid was made to get around the rules.

On this 14th edition, we are handing over the turntables to Dj Paul Mac, a knowledgeable selector with a deep and storied records collection of proto-trance, early euphoria and trance before it was trance records from the late 80s and early 90s. The Birth of Trance(88-92)with DJ Paul Mac - GTAC014

Ahh, what could be more fun than a forest rave eh? A beautiful spot with some lovely people. Some of the best sets I've heard all year honestly. I wanted to showcase some new tunes for this, but I also wanted to try linking some of this Nutrancey goodness to some classic mid 90's Goa. Some don't consider the first 11 tracks or so of this set to be trancey. This underground sound is an homage to the 90s, but where does it fit? To each there own I guess, but it has the sound and spirit of Goa to me, albeit with less progression. And it's more relentless with it's pounding basslines and modern track lengths. Whatever you call it, it's damn fun and way more interesting to me than modern trance. Had to rerecord this as I forgot to record on site, but it's damn close to the OG with most of the same mistakes. Enjoy :)

1993 was the year that trance really solidified. I'm not sure your average clubgoer would be able to identify trance outside of a very small crowd, but. If you were in the right spot, the euphoric and melodic sounds of trance were just getting rolling. The music from 1993 is really quite amazing for the time and technology, some of which still sounds fresh 30 years later. This mix has some of my favorites, with some flavors of 2023 to spice things up. Made for the Reddit #classictrance comp, cheers.
