@norm-de-plume is an artist we always make sure that we check out when he drops a new release, this UK born producer who now calls Sydney home consistently releases some great house music, often tinged with the deepest of disco. His latest EP via US label @betterlistenrecords keeps his golden run going strong featuring four sublime tracks.

For their next release, Leng Records are offering-up something a little bit different: a 12” compilation of little-known and hard-to-find Balearic gems selected by friend of the label Paul Beckett.

Plucked from the dusty corners of his collection, the five tracks on show are musically rich excursions that effortlessly blur the boundaries between genres and will sound especially perfect on a humid Mediterranean or Adriatic afternoon.

First up is The Ray & John’s languid, disco-tinged ‘Day By Day (Instrumental)’, which originally featured on the flipside of the Italian duo’s sole single from 1984. Rich in rubbery bass guitar, sequenced synth-bass, sharp disco guitar licks and occasional chanted vocals, it sounds like Please-era Pet Shop Boys reclining at a Rimini pool party.

It’s followed by Angel’o’s ‘Angelo’, a turn-of-the-80s gem picked from the band’s long-forgotten album, Dream Machine. Marked out by warming electric piano motifs, squelchy synth-bass and hazy lead vocals, the track successfully mixes krautrock and space rock sounds with the then fresh sound of synth-pop.

Next up is All Trouvee’s ‘Darling’, a thoroughly overlooked 1987 single whose minimalistic sleeve artwork lists each of the now-classic – and then cutting edge – synthesizers used to make the sun-soaked blend of mid-80s synth disco, AOR pop and sunset-ready jazz-funk piano solos.

Equally impactful is Angel’s ‘Tomorrow Night’, a little-known chunk of glossy, laidback synth-pop. Its’ sound of delayed drums, synth-horns, Nile Rodgers style guitar licks and echoing lead lines was actually far sighted for the time but would become more familiar to listeners as synth-pop boomed in the mid 1980s.

Rounding off the package is ‘Feeling Action’ by Eggs Time, a deliciously warm and woozy chunk of Italian pop/West Coast jazz-rock fusion plucked from a real slice of buried treasure: an Italian compilation called Moby Dick. There’s certainly a tinge of both yacht rock and blue-eyed soul about the tracks blend of FM synth sounds, eyes-closed jazz guitar solos, unfussy beats and sweet female vocals.

It provides a fittingly horizontal finish to a collection packed with long-overlooked, sun-baked treats.

@Freerangerecords boss @Jimpster is back with another ridiculously classy EP fusing deep and soulful house with afro edges as he pays tribute to the South African deep house vibe that he is a well known supporter and advocate for. It's a country that he has visited on many occasions, and which is hailed by many as the Deep House capital of the world.

Featuring four tracks, South African vocalist Mavhungu stars on the lead track 'Tribute' which also see's two remixes from Yoruba maestro Osunlade. It's a truly inspiring slice of house music.

Our premier today is the bubbling deep house bliss of Jacidswing with it's acid 303 B-line, smooth euphoric pads and wicked percussion. It's a hypnotic and heart wrenching piece of music and another incredible release for Freerange.

Four years on from his explorative third full-length ‘Aquamarine,’ Londoner Ash Walker returned in June 2023 with an equally ambitious follow-up, 'Astronaut'. Alongside a plethora of award-winning collaborators and combining a dizzying array of sounds, ‘Astronaut’ hears Walker push his astral shower of rhythm and vibes to new heights. If 'Aquamarine’ was the take-off of his audial spaceship, ‘Astronaut’ is the cosmic voyage reaching terminal velocity; a rocket-powered masterclass spanning jazz, blues, soul, funk, and reggae.

An avid record collector, Walker has DJed far and wide... from the infamous Royal Mail squat party to the canals of Venice, spinning vinyl in Brixton with The Specials to scattering dub across San Francisco and LA. His own production output is similarly exploratory: his journeys have taken him far and wide, from tunnels under the river Thames to recording local percussionists in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Inspired by a deep dive of sounds from artists including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, King Tubby, Bo Diddley, 4Hero, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Curtis Mayfield, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; his first two albums, ‘Augmented 7th’ (2015) and ‘Echo Chamber’ (2016) gained attention from the likes of BBC 6 Music DJs Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Gideon Coe.
