Jean-Pierre Bélanger enseigne au Collège Clarétain à Victoriaville au Québec. Le projet finaliste qu’il a créé pour ses élèves et qui est intitulé Le discours politique, dans la peau des personnages offre aux élèves une occasion de reproduire en classe un discours historique. L'objectif est pour eux de s'approprier notre histoire en redonnant vie aux mots qui ont marqué l'histoire du Canada, en les remettant dans leur contexte et en examinant leur impact sur la société de l'époque. En plus de mettre en valeur leurs talents oratoires, ce projet laisse place à l’originalité des élèves et permet d’actualiser la pensée historique à travers des événements d’une autre époque ou d’un passé très rapproché.

Ce projet créé par Kevin Péloquin, enseignant au Collège Saint-Hilaire à Mont-Saint-Hilaire au Québec, est finaliste pour le Prix d’histoire du Gouverneur général pour l’excellence en enseignement. Le projet intitulé Cours-voyage sur des sites historiques engage activement les élèves à jouer le rôle d’interprètes de l’histoire tout au long de l’année scolaire. À partir de l’étude des fonctions et usages d’un site historique ou d’un artéfact de la Grèce ancienne, les élèves plongent au cœur d’une véritable enquête historienne afin de recoller les pièces de leur casse-tête historique. La présentation du fruit de cette enquête ouvre la voie à la discussion sur les usages publics des lieux historiques sur tout le territoire canadien.

Tracey Salamondra and Carla Cooke designed a cross-curricular project where students partnered with community members and organizations to create historical narratives for an interpretive trail expansion in a neighbouring community. The project capitalized on the assets of rural communities, strong relationships, and the ability to overcome obstacles that emerged while completing an inquiry project during the pandemic. The students interviewed current and former residents and worked with museum artifacts, digital archives, and local historians as secondary sources. After studying storytelling, narrative writing, and the writing process, students each wrote, edited, and fact-checked three narratives of their choosing. The project allowed students to see history as a living discipline and learn about their communities' stories, changing how they viewed their rural communities.

This interview is part of a special series of the Teaching Canada's History podcast where we spoke with the finalists for the 2022 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Students seek to understand the complex legacies arising from the points of view of the Fathers of Confederation by creating a scripted dialogue between two figures of that time. Starting with a discussion on the removal of the statues of John A. Macdonald, students dig into the dominance of the Orange Order in 19th century Canadian politics and interrogate the commonalities in the treatment of Irish migrants and Métis peoples. This assists students to explain what spurred both Irish Fenians and the Métis to strike violently against the dominant political order of the Confederation era.

Tout au long du mois de février, les enfants de 1re année de la classe de Natasha Camacho ont découvert divers Afro-Canadiens : vivants actuellement et à travers l'histoire. Une personne dont nous avons entendu parler était le Dr Ligoure, le premier médecin noir de la Nouvelle-Écosse et un héros très notable de l'explosion d'Halifax. Notre projet consistait à faire des recherches sur le Dr Ligoure et à rendre compte de nos découvertes par l'écriture, l'illustration et la création d'une vidéo. Enfin, les enfants ont écrit des lettres au maire, appelant à une plus grande reconnaissance publique du Dr Ligoure et de son héritage.

Dans le cadre du projet de Stéphanie Pain, ses élèves ont étudié le conte Poisson-Volant voulait devenir un Oiseau-Mouche. Développé avec le soutien de l'auteur et de l'aînée métisse Anishinabee Dolorès Contré offre un exemple de l'intégration des perspectives, du contenu et des modes d'apprentissage autochtones dans les cours de français. Il met également en évidence le pouvoir des histoires autochtones pour la transmission des connaissances. Le processus a permis aux élèves et à l'enseignant, guidés par l'auteur, d'expérimenter la pensée circulaire au-delà de la simple compréhension intellectuelle. Les élèves ont fait l'expérience d'un apprentissage holistique ancré dans leur territoire et ont appris l'interdépendance des êtres animés et inanimés. Des activités de sciences sociales, de théâtre et d'arts visuels ont permis aux élèves de comprendre les enjeux de la promotion, de la préservation ou de la revitalisation des savoirs autochtones.

Despite her crucial role as diplomat for Hudson’s Bay Company Governor James Knight, few people will recognize the name of Thanadelthur. Enslaved by Cree for a year before escaping, Thanadelthur, a young (and likely teenage) Chipewyan woman, made a deal with Knight to work as a translator so that she could be reunited with her family. Her duties included brokering an “impossible” peace between the Cree and Chipewyan so that trading relations could be established and safely maintained. Canada’s History Society web editor, Tanja Hutter, came across Thanadelthur’s story while digitizing the Beaver archive and Thanadelthur immediately came to mind when asked, “Who is your History Idol?”

Historian Margaret Conrad was a member of the Progressive Conservative Students Society at Acadia University in the late 1960s when she witnessed a speech given by Tommy Douglas. This experience turned her personal politics on its head. “He captured everyone in the room no matter what their political affiliation was,” she says. To Conrad, Douglas was defined by his altruism and his belief that the role of government is to help create a better society and a better Canada. In this interview Canada’s History assistant editor, Beverley Tallon catches up with Roy MacSkimming, author of Laurier in Love, who shares his thoughts about Canada’s seventh prime minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The first prime minister to come from French Canada, Laurier established the Canadian navy, provided free trade and reduced duty on several natural resources with the United States, and oversaw the creation of two new provinces and one territory.

In this podcast, Canada's History speaks with Michael Diluccio, a finalist for the 2018 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Through a competitive and collaborative assignment titled “Rock Your Decade,” Michael’s grade 10 students critically examine post-war Canadian history. Students are assigned a specific decade, and through a series of assignments and presentations, they must advocate for that decade and challenge specific historical events and decisions made by the federal government in other decades.

Ce projet scolaire se veut une porte ouverte vers la reconnaissance des éléments patrimoniaux présents dans la région de Châteauguay et de ses localités avoisinantes par l’entremise de la photographie numérique ou argentique (sur pellicule). 

Suite à la présentation des formations, les étudiants doivent choisir un sujet à photographier et rechercher de l’information à son sujet par la mise en place d’une démarche d’analyse se référant à la pensée historique. La présentation finale du projet, réalisée dans une institution muséale, permet aux jeunes comme à la communauté locale d’apprécier le fruit de ce travail collectif.  

À la fin de l’exposition, les œuvres réalisées par les élèves sont démontées puis présentées en alternance dans des résidences pour personnes âgées.

In a historic ruling on March 8, 2013 that ended the thirty-year claim, the Supreme Court of Canada determined that the federal government failed in its obligations to the Métis people under the Manitoba Act.

Philippe Mailhot, historian and director of the Saint Boniface Museum at the time, provided a historical perspective of the claim and the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The Manitoba Act received royal assent on May 12, 1870, ending a period of conflict in the Red River Settlement and formally creating the Province of Manitoba. However, the form of negotiations and the terms and obligations set out under the Act are the subject of a claim brought against the federal government by the Manitoba Métis Federation.

Histoire à vélo est un projet dynamique, écoresponsable et transdisciplinaire qui a utilisé la bicyclette comme moyen d’enseigner l’histoire. Dans la première partie du projet, l’apprenant était un citoyen réfléchi et autonome qui a préparé sa visite à vélo au canal de Lachine. En résumé, l’étudiant a établi son itinéraire avec Google Maps et l’idée d’observer les infrastructures importantes du canal. Dans le but d’interpréter l’évolution de ce lieu historique, l’apprenant a ensuite comparé ses observations avec des sources historiques. Dans la deuxième partie, l’étudiant a continué son aventure et ses apprentissages avec une vidéo GoPro de l’enseignant qui se déplace à vélo dans les différents quartiers de Montréal. Enfin, l’apprenant a compris que l’histoire est omniprésente et qu’elle enrichit nos activités quotidiennes.
