About the paper: Exile to integration - Dublin as a paradigm for the Huguenots experience in Ireland.

With the Huguenots, who made up the largest group of non-Anglophone immigrants to Ireland during the Early Modern era, it was always a question of identity. The co-presenters of this paper seek to investigate the myths and realities behind the perspectives on selfhood held by Huguenots, and how they might have been viewed by others. From 1662 - c.1720 thousands of Huguenots travelled to and settled in Ireland, establishing population clusters. By far, the largest and most significant of these French Protestant concentrations was in Dublin. But what the Huguenots exactly did establish there cannot be neatly categorized, nor can it be it simply encompassed under conventional terminology. “Enclave”? “colony”?, “settlement”? “community”? “diaspora”?: all fall short of capturing the totality, and even the essence, of the Huguenot presence there.

Integral to the story of the Huguenots are the corrosive forces of integration and assimilation. The question that was posed during Dublin Tercentenary Conference on the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1985: “When did a Huguenot cease to be a Huguenot?”, remains unanswered. This paper will attempt to shed new light as to what stage in the assimilatory process the transformation might have occurred; examine the Huguenot population in its three major “waves” of arrival, the experiences of paradigmatic families; and measure the impact of intra-religious dissonance and the pivotal role played by the Earl of Galway.

If I Don't Tell You

Psychiatrist, lecturer, and author Dr. Iain McGilchrist joins me for this episode. We discuss some of the themes and ideas presented in his book The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World.

In the very beginning of this interview, Dr. McGilchrist presents a detailed picture of the "divided brain"—specifically, the evolutionary and adaptive perceptual functions of the left and right hemispheres of the brain. We then discuss how the balance, or imbalance, of these relatively different perceptual functions inherent to each hemisphere of the brain informed the development and trajectory of human cultures and societies, up to the present. More specifically, we discuss how the Western worldview (the value systems that have been cultivated in predominantly Western societies), over the course of thousands of years, began to favor a more "left brain" form of organized thinking and cultural development, and how this predominantly "left brain" thinking has lead our civilization, now global in scope, towards the brink of wide-scale ecological devastation.

Sometimes all you have is the hope that there will be hope, and that can be enough. “Chain Of Coral” explores that. There’s a straight A major at the end of this song and it was a big deal for us to add that in. That’s the light, the hope for hope. In terms of our process we’re pretty minimal in our attitude so every decision can be a big decision. We’re slow creatures, but once the work is done and the ink has set, we hope the songs can wash over people, like watching a dance or studying a fire. We’ve been in such an intense and creative place with the music that we almost forgot about the sharing part. It’s both exciting and strange to release these songs.

Studying a fire — that’s a pretty apt comparison for “Chain Of Coral.” The duo’s melody weaves in and out of focus initially, like tips of flames moving in unpredictable yet still natural arcs. The song becomes entrancing in the same ways as the images Leech evokes, drawing you in with one flare, one faded hook, before encouraging you to get lost in its currents.
