Hastings World Listening Day 2021

Made for ONCA, Brighton for Remembrance Day for Lost Species, 30 Nov 2017. 'Silent Spring' is the title of Rachel Carson’s book published in 1962 warning of the impending environmental disaster of unbridled industrial pesticide manufacture and use. This sound piece refers both directly and indirectly to Carson, related or inspired work such as Massive Attack’s track 'Silent Spring', Steven Stucky’s symphonic poem of the same title, as well as crop spraying and extracts from David Mitchell’s 'The Bone Clocks' and Maggie Gee’s 'The Ice People'. The work is a lament and dreaming of reversal knowing what lies ahead if we do not.

Installation at As Long As My Arm at the Dirty Old Gallery, East Sussex.

The sound, video and photographic work considers the irrevocably entwined relationship between human activity and the environment. As a field recordist hunting urban as much as bucolic sonifications, it is unavoidable that aural sensations bypass fictions that we thread into the current consumer paradigm (at our own peril). The recordings are littered with machine and anthropophonic interruptions emphasising human occupation and enterprise. Marina activity, the rebuild of Hastings Harbour Arm, marsh sluices and around the RSPB and power station at Dungeness all evidence the interconnections between utility, exploitation, defense, leisure and environmental conservation and our innate stubbornness against preserving the latter.
