Cape Cod Healthcare (CCHC) has received its trauma center verification. President and CEO Michael Lauf says it was a long road, but the verification is just one of many ways they’re upgrading and expanding in 2025 to better serve the region. 
Among their plans is a new urgent care facility for The Pinehills, marking the provider’s first off-Cape location. He says it's patterned on their successful seasonal urgent care facilities, such as the one recently opened in Orleans. 
He also discusses on this week’s Sunday Journal more about how the one-dollar lease with Gosnold’s addiction treatment center came to be, and CCHC’s plans for the property and more behavioral health services now that they’ve elected not to renew the lease.

Travelers will soon ride for free on Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority fixed bus routes. 

RTA Acting Administrator Kathy Jensen says clarified policy language has allowed them to join other RTA’s off Cape in offering free fares. 

The funds for free fairs comes from the recently adopted Fair Share Amendment which increased taxes on luxury real estate sales.

Quahog Day summer forecasts, booming business on Cape with Chamber of Commerce

This Sunday is World Ocean Day, and the Center for Coastal Studies has several beach cleanups and other activities to celebrate. Marine Debris and Plastics Program Laura Ludwig joins Sunday Journal to talk about the cleanups, as well as more about the Outer Cape research institution. From entanglement rescues for whales to critical studies on sharks, she says the Center has been working hard to bridge the gap between humans and the creature that call the Cape coasts home.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s cancellation of AmeriCorps funding, freeing up money again for the local Barnstable County branch. 
AmeriCorps Cape Cod lead Misty Neimeyer said they are happy with the return, but they now have doubts that a grant they applied for this summer will come through. 
The program helps clean up local environments, staff shelters during winter storms, and more.

Cape’s homeless population might look smaller on paper this year, but it’s likely not the full story, says local experts.

The annual Point in Time survey reported 365 people experiencing homelessness, down from the previous year, but likely due to less shelters to survey at, says Homeless Management Information System manager Charise Madison.

The county has received $2.2 million to help, including for supportive housing for those disabled, outreach programs,  resource events.  The full interview with Madison can be found on CapeCod.com.

Grammy-winning conductor James Blachly is joining the Cape Symphony as guest conductor for "To the Sea," an ocean-themed concert celebrating the coastline for their masterpiece program. 

Blachly is also in the running for the Music Director role at the Cape Symphony, and will be giving a Q&A before each show the concert series.

The Massachusetts Inspector General says that he has concerns about the decades-long wastewater projects planned by Cape towns.

Inspector General Jeffrey Shapiro was just on Cape recently to raise awareness about public reporting and he says preserving institutional knowledge and keeping good records will be vital to ensuring the projects get completed on time, on budget, and legally even as staff changes over the years. 

Among his outreach efforts has also been ongoing conversations with town leaders across Cape on management, especially with other big-ticket items like housing projects looming.

Cape Cod Gateway Airport has its next airport manager. Michael Nelson has been unanimously chosen by the board to lead the airport after serving as the interim manager since April. He has more than 30 years of experience in air traffic control and operations between Logan International Airport and Otis Air National Guard Base. 
Nelson will immediately assume responsibility for daily operations, including regulatory compliance and community relations.
