OL aka Oleg Buyanov is well known in his native Russia already. He has a background extending from releases on Faces Records and scuzzy lo-fi hip hop beats on labels like Error Broadcast, Idle and Fine Grains dating back to 2007. More recently though he has been increasingly turned on by dance floor focussed sounds and as such, here come two missives on Russia’s Capital Bass (which also hosts a popular bass and garage night in Moscow and has done since 2006). 

‘Get Depressed’ is a nicely frayed brew of dusty hi hats, well treated vocal snippets and unpredictable key stabs. The analogue sounding bottom end is all taught rubbery kick drums and there is a nice freeform, natural vibe to the way the tune unfolds. Think of the roughness but loveliness of Gerry Read and you’ll be in the right area. 

‘Make Things’ is another non-standard house tune with blobs of synth and whirring machine noises kicking things off. A diced & sliced Detroit Electro-style vocal snippet then judders into the mix, as do grubby bass tones, classic cowbell pings and dramatic splashes of cymbals. It’s a large and all consuming track that places you right at the centre of the drama as it unfolds all around. It’s a teaser that never fully drops, and it will surely drive dancefloors as wild as it was expertly designed to do.

Russian natives Capital Bass continue to shine a light into their buoyant local scene following up OL’s ‘Make Things’ EP with Formally Unknown’s debut label release: ‘Untitled’ EP. 

‘Untitled’ opens up, building behind a gently reverberated 4/4 kick and interchanging hat sequences. Hypnotic, off-kilter samples and subtle flecks of acid generate a brooding and purposeful tone as a sense pressure builds throughout. 

‘Tribalz’ steadily grows with space echo tails drifting in amongst full and tenebrous pads. A brash and busy 2-step rhythm emerges as an overdriven kick sticks wood-blocks and cowbells to the floor. In a manner akin to the likes of Joe and Blawan, rattling rhythms are mapped across all corners of the mix with imperious accuracy. 

The digital only ‘Will Never’ gambols into focus as another frazzled kick forms a bustling underbelly beneath rich and tangible textures. Rumbling bass-tones swell under reverberated vocal chops as more primal rhythms clatter up above. 

More auspicious and effective bass-music from a beacon in the Russian club-scene.

Lokiboi has grew up in the neighbourhood on the south - Western Side of Moscow city, at the age of 9 he moved to London with his family. 

London has played a significant role as a main influence for the sound he came up with. in this upcoming EP you will hear a mixture of the lo - fi sound blended with the different genres. 

A hybrid of ghetto house mashed up with the classic 'ha' cuts from vogue and the dark rhythms recorded with classic machines like mpc2000 & tr 707.

We are happy to announce the second EP by sir Ponty Mython on Capital Bass. It has been two years since his bulletproof “Jesus” EP in 2013. During these two years Ponty Mython has been working with such iconic house imprints as Arma, Quentssnetials, Dirt Crew and others. His new “Adverbs” EP is a quite eclectic thing. Side A is a filtered house banger “Gracefully" - a result of sampling games with Moscow house star Lay-Far (Local Talk, In-beat-ween). Side B - “Afterwards” tune is a real one-loop thriller, dirty and raw, with african samples and invisible sub bass line. On B side you can also find a psychedelic version of “ Afterwards” by Saint Petersburg techno artist Nocow (Roots United, Fauxpas Musik).

We are exploring new sonic territories with our second release by SPb based producer Ponty Mython, well known abroad with his label Beats Delivery.

The main theme called "Jesus" makes you stomp your feet to its funky beat and phat acid bassline that mutates during the track keeping things deep without getting too religious. Futureboogie man Christophe does some good work on the remix adding the extra syrup: even more bass plus preacher’s speech in the middle of the track. The remix will be a digital exclusive bonus.

The B-side goes even deeper, starting off with the smooth disco beat with a 2step flavor, little guitar and that catchy male vocal the track changes halfway with addition of funky acid squelches and 4x4 house beat

CB002: Ponty Mython - Jesus EP (incl. Christophe remix)

Capital Bass has launched at the end of 2006 at Moscow’s 16Tons Club with the participation of Kode9. The parties continued with performances from such British sound-system music defining artists as Skream, Loefah, Plastician, Mala/Digital Mystikz and Benga. This was a starting point and a very important impulse for the further development of dubstep movement in the capital, or even in the whole of Russia, it could be said.

From 2009 Capital Bass continued to introduce the crowd to the artists who push the underground scene forward and go beyond genres: Pearson Sound, Untold, Bok Bok, D Bridge, Marry Anne Hobbs - just to name a few.

Since 2012 CB started to focus more on the Russian local story and became a record label releasing the various kind of genres. Capital Bass releases not only names who have already made headlines at home and abroad - like OL and Ponty Mython - but also keeps an eye on emerging producers such as Ilevina, Formally Unknown and others.
