love is a strong word. a lot of my newer friends feel uncomfortable around me because i don't really express gratitude or affection very well. i'm not a very serious person, but i've always held love in a special regard, never to be joked about or to be taken with anything less than absolute sincerity.

with that said, i have made a few friends by circumstance throughout the summer of this year, and i never really let them know how they made me feel. i never knew how to express it. a few of them told me they loved me, but i never could say anything genuine because i didn't know how to respond to something i've never felt before. i'm still not used to it, even as i'm preparing to leave, seeing some of these folks possibly for the last time.

i set out originally to recreate the feeling of peace in rain, but as this song matured and developed over the two months it took to write and record, it became an emotional reflection of the wonderful ways that these friends have made me feel. i couldn't live with myself if i didn't express this to them somehow, but words alone would never do enough.

i can't directly name this handful of people for the sake of privacy, but also because it's not a public and universal acknowledgement. i didn't create this to be a general-purpose thank you card to be signed off to everyone i'm discussing. this is a difficult, personal, and individual expression of love.

if i've personally sent this to you and asked you to read the description, it's because you were one of the beautiful people who've made me feel these things, and in a funny sort of way, you created the song with me. all i've done is write it down.

a largely distracted experiment in pulse dissonance. this song is a passionate but meaningless tribute to a dear friend, and simultaneously an expression of love for all the friends who shared the burden of pushing through this dim slough. telling people that they are truly one of the very few reasons you're alive is a hard thing to communicate, especially when you give off the impression that you're never being serious, or that you're always exaggerating, or whatever. true gratitude is a difficult thing to express for me, and i will never find the words, but i can get close with sound. i hope you can understand. if i sent this to you personally, then all of this is for you, all of this is because of you.
