This is a recording of humpback whales singing on the Silver Bank, Dominican Republic, made on Feb. 15, during Week 3 of the 2011 season. Humpback whales gather by the thousands to court, mate and give birth. As part of the socializing, male humpback whales sing their song to attract a female or to establish territory with other males. In this recording there were so many whales singing that it was not possible to discern individual whales clearly or establish a count. By my best estimation, there were 12-15 whales audible, the most I have ever heard at one time. A Chorus of Humpback Whales

This high quality recording was made on the afternoon of Feb. 24, 2011 during Week 4 of the Conscious Breath Adventures 2011 Silver Bank humpback whale season. On this day we were able to find and swim with a singing humpback whale. Our guests were in the water literally swimming in the music as they watched, and I was able to drift nearby in the tender while dangling our hydrophone in the water (www.AquarianAudio.com). At times the hydrophone was within fifty feet of the singer, so the sound quality is excellent. To truly appreciate this recording, it should be listened to through an amplified stereo system, not just through computer speakers, then the nuances of the song really shine through. Also, be sure to play it for your pets! I have been receiving numerous reports of domestic animals reacting strongly to recordings of humpback whale songs. Guests of Conscious Breath Adventures were able to spend more than an hour in the water with this whale as it serenaded them with his song. The clip was recorded on the Silver Bank, part of the Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic. It includes distant humpback whale song. The highlight is the much louder and closer sounds that were being vocalized during a competitive interaction. This was a confrontation between five male humpbacks as they competed with each other to win a position as "escort" to an available female. The hope for the escort is that she will accept him as a potential mate.

This is a recording of multiple humpback whales singing on the Silver Bank of the Dominican Republic. This recording was made during the week of Feb 27-Mar 6, 2010 during a Conscious Breath Adventures cruise to swim with the humpback whales.

What is most interesting about this recording is that the listener can easily discern at least four individual whales' songs in the foreground, with more in the distant background. It is a proper whale chorus!

Humpback Whale Chorus

This recording was captured on March 1, 2011 in the Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic, located on the Silver Bank. Conscious Breath Adventures conducts swim-with-humpback whale eco-tours under special permit from the Dominican Parks Dept. Each winter, some 3,000-5,000 whales visit the area to court, mate and give birth.

And to sing!

In this track, you can hear at least a half dozen individual whales singing. There are a couple that are loud and clear in the foreground while the rest are fainter and more distant. They are not specifically trying to sing together, but since the song travels so well underwater, the combined songs overlap into a single amazing chorus.

This is a recording of a singing male humpback whale, recorded early in the Conscious Breath Adventures 2010 Silver Bank humpback whale season. It is the longest uninterrupted recording made this season, almost 16 minutes in length. It was recorded using an Aquarian Audio hydrophone hooked into a Zoom H4n digital recorder from a distance of 100-300 yards from the singing whale, as the boat slowly drifted away.

This recording was captured during week two of the 2012 Conscious Breath Adventures Silver Bank humpback whale season. I originally put the hydrophone in the water to listen to and record a singing whale, but there was a local commercial fishing vessel anchored nearby with its fleet of small skiffs working. Instead of whales, I got an earful of ocean noise pollution, one of the growing threats to whales and marine life everywhere. The sounds in this recording are of whales and of a single ten horsepower two stroke outboard motor, small by any standards. It was remarkable how much noise even a small motor makes. Silver Bank Fishing Boats and Whales

This is a recording of the breathing sounds of a group of eight humpback whales in a "Rowdy Group": a group of male whales competing for an available female. In the first portions the istener can hear multiple blows, and in the later parts the vocalizations of the males can be heard as low frequency rumbles and stutters, as well as the trumpeting sounds that are reminiscent of elephants trumpeting.

This is a short recording of a singing male humpback whale recorded in the Vava'u island group of the Kingdom of Tonga on Aug. 6, 2010. This is my first time in Tonga and with the Southern Pacific humpback whales. It is interesting to compare this song with recordings I made on the Silver Bank of the Dominican Republic in the North Atlantic earlier this year. This track was recorded on the Silver Bank, Dominican Republic, during the Conscious Breath Adventures 2012 humpback whale season. This whale was singing so loudly that it could be heard from the deck of the boat and even vibrated the boat itself; it could be felt through guests' feet. Singing Male Humpback Whale Mar 5, 2019

This is a live recording made 15 August 2010 in Vava'u, Tonga. It is from a kava party and ukelele music session thrown by and in honor of the crew of the vaka "O Tahiti Nuie Freedom", which stopped over in Vava'u for several days while en route from Tahiti to Shanghai, China. The musicians are the captain and some of the crew, the real deal, and the best ukelele players I heard during my ten weeks there. In the background you can hear the periodic 1-2-3 clapping of hands which is the kava drinker's way of requesting a serving from the master of ceremonies. It was a great night!

This is a short recording of a male humpback whale that was singing on the Silver Bank, Dominican Republic on Feb. 11, 2020. Our guests were able to swim with this awesome whale for an hour. He was one of the loudest and most powerful singers we have heard in a long time and I was happy with the recording given the windy surface conditions.
