Lovers Rock

This is a song that I wrote and recorded nearly 20 years ago, back in the Pepperhill Studio days. With Dave’s Not Here, and with my first solo album, I put a lot of focus on my guitar solos. I don’t want to say that I wrote each song with the idea of a guitar solo in mind, but there was always space for one, and often the guitar solo became both the focal point and the climax of the song. 

This song, along with the others that eventually became the Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow EP, was written specifically not to have a guitar solo. I wanted to shift the focus of the material from what I could play to what mood I could create. To that end I think it was pretty successful. I also think that I must have been listening to a lot of Mad Season at the time, because this feels like I completely aped it from them. 

This is also the first song that I played drums on. I can’t say that I did a good job, but I’m happy that my playing didn’t ruin it. I kept it simple, with just a kick, snare, and ride. I wanted to use brushes, but I didn’t own any, so I grabbed a couple of paint brushes that I had laying around and used them. I must have either been manic at the time or completely broke. Or more likely both.
