CARELESS – GREAT ESCAPES

1932 
A luxury liner runs aground off the coast of Madagascar. Days later, a rescue diver hears the strains of a tune; he finds the ship’s band’s drummer perched in an air pocket in the wine cellar, belting out “Happy Days Are Here Again.” The diver pulls up a stool at a half-submerged piano, and together, they make their way through the Jerome Kern songbook and half a crate of Chateau d’Yquem before the air runs out and they’re forced to swim to safety.

1953 
On tour with a polka combo in Paris, Hari, the drummer, runs across Mike, the former diver, in Montmartre, now working as an organ grinder with a trained monkey. Hari stops to croon “La Vie en Rose”; a crowd gathers and showers them with centimes. The trio dub themselves Sans-Souci (Careless) and quickly become the toast of the town – until the monkey is shot for gambling debts. Despondent, Hari and Mike go their separate ways.

2000 
 Reuniting by chance at a Toronto retirement home, Hari and Mike jam out in the common room and develop a new melodic style that draws on elements of indie rock, soul, jazz, and Indian classical music. Unimpressed, their fellow residents pelt them with digestive biscuits. For revenge, Hari and Mike sneak across the street after curfew to a recording studio, and then sell their music to TV b-movies so it’ll play in the common room regardless.

2013-2014  
After a blood transplant in Switzerland, a rejuvenated Hari & Mike record their debut album as Careless, Great Escapes. It features multiple Juno-winning singer Kiran Ahluwahlia, guitarists Justin Abedin (Jacksoul) and Michael Kulas (James), trumpeter Bryden Baird (Feist), and cellist Kevin Fox (Justin Bieber … seriously). Along with Abedin, they’ll be playing an album launch on Jan. 16 at Supermarket in Toronto. They’re hoping to make back some of their great-grandchildren’s inheritance, but like Edith Piaf, they regret nothing.
