Blackest Ever Black presents Red X, the debut release from Young Echo member Ossia. 10 unyielding minutes of noise-strafed, rootical techno backed with two more abstract, uncanny studies in reverb and delay. 

One of the Bristol underground’s most vital behind-the-scenes operators, Ossia runs the RWD FWD mail-order and oversees the Peng! Sound, No Corner and Hotline Recordings labels, among others. Though you may have clocked his appearances as DJ Oa$is on FuckPunk, the no-fi dancehall label he runs with Vessel, Red X is his first proper solo offering. The title track was made during the winter of 2014/15, inspired by Peter Tosh’s personal taped diaries: mysterious reel-to-reel recordings in which the reggae star documented his dissatisfaction with city life under Babylonian rule, and his mistrust of certain people around him, in the run-up to his shocking murder in ’87. Recorded using - among other things - samples, Roland synth, and a rowdy one-take session with the open spring reverb thundering through echo pedals, hard delays and distortion, 'Red X'  brilliantly bridges dubwise, isolationist electronics and modern soundsystem dynamics, the stoic half-step of its opening section gradually hewn apart with a ruffneck 4/4 thump, warping sub-bass and a hellfire of high frequencies. Spacious, spry and airy, but with the threat of violence never far way, B1 'Ice & Blood' feels like something picked up on an ebbing pirate signal, with deep blue synths holding fast against stepping razor drum edits. The deep, dread ambience of B2 ’Blood & Ice (Version)’ was coaxed out of an acetate dubplate of ‘Ice & Blood’, and the crackly old 7” run-out groove of Tosh’s ‘Oh Boombaclat’, shot through ’70s Copicat tape-delay and an array of effects. It powerfully evokes the the last breath, or perhaps first gasp, after the rain, after the violence. Peace at last. Vinyl-only edition of 500 housed in beautiful screen-printed sleeve designed by Studio Tape Echo.

'Nebula Dance' assimilates the influences of current music being made at the speeds between 140 to 160 bpm, reacting to develpoments in dubstep, jungle and more recently footwork, retraining Ital Tek's instinct for deep and melodic music with an emphasis on dramatic drum work and impressionistic synths with restrained precision. Opener and title track 'Nebula Dance' sets the scene, playing with melodic timestretched breakbeats and smashing snares with a distinctly early jungle atmosphere, reminiscent of Rufige Kru's early breakbeat experiments, but retooled for the footwork generation. 'Pixel Haze' messes with lush, swirling 8-bit arpeggios over cracking kicks and snapping snares, building into a dense rushing atmosphere with held chords. 'Dusk Beat' is all Rhodes-like with relaxing atmospheric synths over soft footwork toms, keeping the pressure up with and tight fills and edits. 'Intercruise' cools things down with a half-speed hip hop feel, the synths and voices swelling and pulsing like Art Of Noise's 'Moment’s In Love'. 'Steel Sky' is a slow, molten-sounding track, made of thunderous claps, viscous chords and warping subs, all creating a dense and moody atmosphere. 'Glokk' takes things up a notch again, running bell melodies and dubbed out vocals against rapid-fire synth stabs and rolling drums, leading into the similar but more spacious territory of the warm, airy 'Solar Sail'. 'In Motion' takes things into leaner darker techno territory, with tight 808 edits and basic channel style gaseous chord stabs over a bed of monolithic sub bass creating what is probably the most “dancefloor” track on the album. 'Discontinuum' builds up an airy ambient atmosphere with crashing wave-like field recordings, relying on a single high speed tom to keep pace before crashing into 'Human Version' with its bittersweet melody and sense of urgency. 'Yesterday Tomorrow Today' closes the album with bass trills and feather-like synths slowly bringing us back down to earth.

First released in 2008 and out of print since 2010, ‘Detrimentalist’ is next up in Planet Mu’s ongoing series of Venetian Snares reissues, prompted by continued public demand. According to the original press release, ‘Detrimentalist’ is Venetian Snares’ 332nd official studio album of disgusting ejacutronic rave horn, fresh off the bakery truck to pluck out your brain cells and replace them with inescapable k-hole oblivion. This is really a roots record for Mr.Snares, revisiting those days when jungle was more about energy and experimentation than a strict formula. Those days before they took out all the good bits between the kicks and the snares. More and more snares between the snares from Snares, this is jungle at it's most invigorating … over 20 people were harmed in the creation of this record. All tracks produced on just 45 laptops and 81 midi synthesizers.

Considered a pioneer of the early UK Funky days, Roska quickly carved his own niche in the sound; initially through his Roska Kicks & Snares imprint and later through his Rinse FM shows and releases on the ever-respected underground Ammunition / Rinse label. In almost no time at all Roska was in demand for remixes that spanned out from the underground, versioning Untold, Four Tet, Jamie George, Zed Bias and more in his own unique style. Roska now returns to Tectonic following the head-turning killer '480 BC' featured on ‘Tectonic Plates Volume 3’ earlier this year, and a collaboration with Pinch - 'Paranormal Activity' – in 2011. This time he's got a whole 12” to himself and we're treated to a real tour-de-force of tribalised rollers, thick with atmospheric attitude, thumping subs and a shoulder-popping percussive workout. 'Blurry' runs at 133bpm allowing it to sit neatly between dubstep tempo and the increasingly popular 125-130 bpm bass / house scene that's been developing in the UK over the last couple of years. Taking things down an “ongy-bongy” path, this rhythm provides the soundtrack to a hunter chasing his prey through a humid jungle landscape, with fast weaving beats charged heavy by the deadly subs. The heat is on. 'Spearhead' sees Roska making a rare 140bpm trip, taking this rhythmical excursion neatly into dubstep tempo territory, creating an original cut which sits in it's own world of tribal grime. The bassline pounds heavy, eventually rising upward before suddenly plummeting back down to the murky depths from where it came, and back round again. Dis-hyeer quality dubstep music produced ‘pon the other side of the looking glass.

Quarter Turns Over A Living Line is the long awaited debut album by Raime. It follows the duo's self-titled 2010 EP and two subsequent 12" singles, 'If Anywhere was here we would know where we are' and 'Hennail'. Moving away from the sample-based strategies that characterised their early work, Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead have looked increasingly to live instrumentation for their first full-length work, mounting intensive recording sessions for percussion, guitar and strings before painstakingly piecing the album together at their home studio. The gothic and industrial signifiers in their music remain, but more submerged and oblique than ever - no less pronounced as influences than jungle's rhythmic dynamism and doom metal's oppressive weight or aspects of techno, modern composition and dub. Quarter Turns Over A Living Line is the first original artist LP on Blackest Ever Black, the young London-based label that has to date released records by Tropic of Cancer, Regis, Black Rain, Pete Swanson, Cut Hands and others. DVA started off Hyperdub’s barrage of albums in 2012 with  his brilliant ‘Pretty Ugly', and now closes the the year with the ‘Fly Juice’ EP’s bumper selection of machine tooled tracks, each created for optimum dancefloor damage and road tested by DVA, Kode9 and a select bunch of DJs. These tracks (four on the double-pack vinyl, with four extra on the digital version) are a brilliant example of what he’s been describing as “power house” for a while, a colourful chunky techno sound that switches up every 8 bars like grime and has plenty of shuffle and offbeat swing as a counterpoint to the 4/4 drums. ‘Fly Juice’ opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns - with the Rhodes as a sweetner, it’s bliss! ‘Do It’ runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. On 'Walk it Out’, the repetition of the title over a pummelling two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. 'Long Street' features a collaboration with South African producer Big Space, and echoes the sound of early UK bleep and bass with a stern melody, breaking down into swirling Detroit-like chords, while shuffling along on a crisp, scissoring rhythm. After the sweet and sour songfulness of his album 'Pretty Ugly', the ‘Fly Juice’ EP shows DVA returning to his dancefloor roots. As an amazing DJ/producer, you can expect more of this in 2013.

After last years Hyperdub debut with the popular 'Set The Tone' EP, Ossie's been busy building a name for himself, as a DJ and a producer with both Ossie and Black Orange Juice releases. He comes back to Hyperdub here with the 'Ignore EP', sporting two catchy, housey, broken beat bombs. 'Ignore' features the vocals of Tilz, singing about the game of winding up the opposite sex, over bouncy, broken drums, neat stabs, and a bendy acidic bassline, with wave-like chords building up and down as if in reflection of the cat and mouse antics of the lyrics. 'Find It' on the B-side makes good with layering some roughly cut up female vocal samples, Todd Edwards-style, but twisted and dubbed into strange shapes, incorporating sloppy, dusty drums and a bassline that sounds like Wiley's early eski beat melodies, keeping the track rolling along and sounding mischievous and chunky. This release continues Ossie's building reputation as a house producer with a very British sound.
