This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features @donato-dozzy, one of the country’s most profound electronic music producers and DJs, internationally renowned for the hypnotic and manifold ways in which he can create deep, absorbing techno trips.

Dozzy first honed his skills at the mythical squat-slash-club Brancaleone in Rome, before moving to Berlin in the mid-aughts, where he elevated his signature style even further with his “Dozzy’s Night” residency at Panorama Bar. Since then, he has gone on to grace line-ups alongside esteemed peers, such as Marcel Dettmann, Jeff Mills, Surgeon, and his compatriot Marco Shuttle.

As a producer, Dozzy first began to make waves in 2004, and has since gone on to release a string of EPs and albums on labels such as Spectrum Spools, Tresor, or The Bunker New York. In addition, he also runs three record labels. Dozzy Records, launched 2006, @spaziodisponibile, established in 2016 together with DJ and producer Giuseppe Tillieci aka @neel, and his latest label @magacircemusica, together with the Spanish graphic artist and DJ @aliciacarrera. 

For Carhartt WIP Radio, Dozzy conducted a mix that gently immerses the listener into his rich body of work playing classics like “Gol” and remixes he has done for other artists, like the legendary experimental electronic group Cabaret Du Ciel. For the first show of 2022, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @dj-spinna-1, the legendary hip hop and deep house innovator from Brooklyn, NYC.

For 30 years Spinna has been a vital part of his hometown’s music legacy. He launched his recording career as a member of the underground hip hop group Jigmastas, before going on to work with the likes of Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, and De La Soul. In addition, he has made his mark as a solo artist, releasing benchmark albums like “Here to There“ from 2002, as well as countless e.p.’s, compilations and remixes for legends and stars like Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Mary J. Blidge, or Steve Wonder.

Since his earliest days, he has been known as an eclectic dj, playing music at the cross-section of hip hop, house, soul, r&b, funk, and jazz. He is also an early proponent of parties dedicated to one artist. His “WONDER-full” DJ nights dedicated to Steve Wonder, and his “Soul Slam” events, better known as the “Michael Jackson VS Prince” parties, became celebrated gatherings all over the USA.
 
For Carhartt WIP Radio DJ Spinna has conducted a mix, which he describes as “time traveling through my early days of underground hip hop with my group Jigmastas and releases from our Beyond Real label, [before] journeying on with some of my earlier remix works and showing my evolution into House Music.”

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2022: DJ Spinna Show

For the second time Carhartt WIP Radio features a show from the Land of the Rising Sun. This time we spotlight Jazzy Sport, an umbrella for a label, two record shops based in Morioka and Tokyo, a distribution company and a production studio in Tokyo. Their musical foundations are rooted in Jazz, Hip Hop, Downtempo, Library music, and House. Each genre can be found in this mix prepared by the Tokyo based DJ and producer grooveman Spot. Besides a few of his own tracks, you will experience music by Japanese artists like DJ Mitsu the Beats, Cro-Magnon, and Physical Sound Sport, who all produce music of varied styles, tempos and grooves.

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2014: Grooveman Spot - Jazzy Sport Radio Show

For this month’s episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, we’ve got a selection of speedy Berlin techno, gabber, hardcore, and trance, courtesy of @djgigola and the label @livefromearth Klub. The independent company and artist collective is run by DJ Gigola alongside a group of friends and features musicians and producers like Nene H, horsegiirL, MCR-T, or Bauernfeind.

A Berlin native, DJ Gigola began rising through the ranks of the local dance scene in 2016. She became known for her versatile club sets, which featured everything from techno, house and percussive rhythms, to hit pop records. Since then, DJ Gigola has  released a string of EPs, remixes and collaborative projects, sealing her reputation as a no-boundaries producer.
 
In anticipation of the release of her introspective dance album Fluid Meditations, out on February 3rd, DJ Gigola prepared a mix for Carhartt WIP Radio, which unlike her debut LP, features speedy Berlin techno, gabber, hardcore and trance, courtesy of a selection of Live From Earth Klub artists. Accompanying the show is an interview with the artist, who discusses how a recent leg injury led to a shift in perspective, the potential effects of ASMR on the dancefloor, and what her predictions are for the ‘sound of tomorrow.’ www.carhartt-wip.com/journal/music

Carhartt WIP Radio February 2023: DJ Gigola - Live From Earth Klub

Once again, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes Innervisions to the airwaves with a mix from Kristian Beyer, one half of the irrepressible, in vogue duo, Âme. Since 2003, German duo Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann have produced music under the alias Âme, combining floor-filling tunes with musical elements that go beyond the usual formula of house and techno. Their single "Rej" became a global club hit in 2006 and the duo has been travelling the world and playing at every major club and festival ever since. If that wasn't enough, along with their buddy Dixon, they also run the Innervisions label, currently one of the most sought-after names in contemporary house. Lately Wiedemann has taken to playing solo live as Âme, while Beyer deejays under the same alias. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Kristian has mixed a show featuring some of his favourite tracks from the Innervisions archive.

Carhartt WIP Radio June 2014: Âme - Innervisions Radio Show

This month’s edition welcomes HiTech, an emerging trio recently featured in issue 08 of WIP magazine, who are composed of King Milo (@scarcettii), Milf Melly (@ramel-cashman) and 47 Chops (@sensaichops47). Since dropping their self-titled debut album in 2022, HiTech have garnered a reputation for being one of the most exciting and innovative acts to have emerged from Detroit in recent years.
 
For this month’s show, the group have created a time-bending mix featuring tracks from their self-titled debut project, as well as songs from their newest release DÉTWAT. The mix is an evolution of ghettotech, booty house, juke and footwork – in other words, their own unique ‘D-Warp’ sound. Accompanying the mix is an article taken from WIP magazine's latest issue, which includes a series of images shot by photographer Samuel Trotter and an interview by the writer DeForrest Brown Jr.. Carhartt WIP Radio July 2023: Héctor Oaks KAOS/OAKS

For August 2023, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @keinemusik, a Berlin-based collective and record label composed of producers/DJs @rampa, @andmeandyou, @adam-port, Reznik, and visual artist Monja Gentschow. 

Although Keinemusik’s members bonded over a shared love of music and the Berlin club scene, its name, paradoxically, means “no music” in German.

Since its origins in 2009, Keinemusik has amassed a devoted following among local and international audiences alike, playing everywhere from Circoloco in Ibiza to Elsewhere in New York City. 

In 2017, the group released its debut album “You Are Safe”. The collective gained further acclaim in 2022, after &ME and Rampa earned production credits on Drake’s 11th studio album “Honestly, Nevermind”.

For this month’s show, the group has put together a mix featuring tracks and remixes exclusively by Keinemusik artists, sprawling minimal techno, Balearic, and house. Carhartt WIP Radio August 2023: Keinemusik

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show welcomes the Paris-born, Tokyo-raised DJ, producer, label founder, and sound designer @alexfromtokyo.

Living in Japan for 25 years during the 80s and 90s, he had an ear to the ground for Tokyo’s thriving electronic and dance music scenes. He worked as a DJ, promoter, translator, and coordinator between Japan and the rest of the world, before launching his own label in 2002, titled world famous. 

This fall, Alex From Tokyo will be releasing Japan Vibrations Vol. 1, a compilation which in his own words, sounds like “the heartbeat of Tokyo: electric, eclectic, and always surprising.”

Carhartt WIP Radio October 2023: Japan Vibrations

This month Carhartt WIP radio features renowned radio host, label founder, and record curator Michael Kucyk from Melbourne, Australia. Kucyk rose to prominence in 2005 via independent Melbourne radio station 3rrr.fm, where he debuted his show Noise In My Head. The show later moved to NTS Radio, before evolving 2015 into what is now the @efficientspace, a reissue label committed to releasing rare and obscure music from Australia, covering everything from post-punk to folk and avant-pop.
 
The mix that Kucyk created for this month’s episode reflects the label’s wide and diverse catalog, featuring early influential releases, album closers, and often-overlooked gems. Carhartt WIP Radio December 2023: NTS Label Profile

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of 2024, we’re focusing on the Dresden-based independent record label @uncanny-valley-dresden.
 
Launched by four friends as a way of platforming music by close peers and collaborators, the label released its first record in 2010 – a dynamic house-driven compilation featuring Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Thomas Fröhlich, and Break SL. 
 
Almost fifteen years later, Uncanny Valley has grown into an international, multidisciplinary effort, collaborating with artists and musicians alike from Brooklyn, Berlin, and New York City. And with the addition of sub-labels Rat Life and shtum, its sound has remained just as diverse, spanning house, hip-hop, acid, and synth-wave.
 
For this month’s episode, Uncanny Valley created a mix which delves into its eclectic back catalog, highlighting favorite tracks alongside some hidden gems. Expect a journey through jazz-funk, hip hop, ambient, Italo and techno.

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2024: Uncanny Valley

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show explores the soundtrack of PRECIOUS, our latest skate film directed by Paris-based filmmaker Joaquim Bayle.

The score is a journey through LA rap by BONES, New York hardcore by Show Me the Body, and avant-garde folk from Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm.

Carhartt WIP Radio February 2024: PRECIOUS

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show places a spotlight on Rotterdam and the influential record label, store and distributor @clone-nl.

Founded by @sergeclone, Clone launched in 1992 with the EP “Coördinated Sounds & Sequences," under Serge’s moniker Orx. 

What began as a platform for Serge’s own music and his friends’ has grown into a worldwide operation, with Clone’s current roster of artists including Finland’s Aleksi Perälä, Germany’s Roman Flügel, and Legowelt from The Netherlands, as well as Detroit’s Drexciya, The Other People Place, and Der Zyklus. Under Clone Records are also several sub labels including  Basement Series, Royal Oak, and Clone Jack for Daze.

In 1995, Serge launched Clone the record store, as well as its distribution arm, which specializes in electronic music, original soundtracks, jazz, funk, and Italo disco from a variety of international labels. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Serge offers an insight into Clone with a mix featuring tracks from its most recent catalog, while paying tribute to the birthplace of techno – Detroit.

Carhartt WIP Radio March 2024: Clone Records

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features the New York-based producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist @keiyaa. 

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, keiyaA grew up singing in the Chicago Children's Choir, before studying the alto saxophone. Today, she combines her jazz training with stirring vocals and neo-soul sensibilities to create richly textured, yet introspective music. Her sound touches r&b, hip hop, and jazz, while also venturing into IDM, ambient, and experimental realms. 

For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, keiyaA has created a mix that features unreleased music, remixes and collaborative works, creating a deep, spiritual flow of experimental grooves, bouncy bass lines, and fourth-world rhythms, all combined with her signature mix of song, rap, spoken word.

This month’s radio show celebrates the Carhartt WIP x Tresor collaboration, highlighting the historic Berlin and Detroit techno axis, also known as 030/313.

For the show, we welcome the Hamburg-based DJ @helena-hauff, who has created a mix documenting the legacy of Tresor, both as a club and record label, and its link to the roots of techno in Detroit.

Pulsing with wild melodies and rapid kicks, the mix was recorded using all vinyl, and features classics from the likes of Drexciya, Joey Beltram, and the late Silent Servant, as well as records from nascent producers such as UFO95. For this month’s show of Carhart WIP Radio, we are traveling to Amsterdam to celebrate 10 years of Dekmantel Festival. This year, the event extends over the course of ten days, with the addition of a conference program at Het HEM and Aan Het IJ, featuring workshops, panel discussions and live interviews.

Before becoming a globally renowned music festival,  operated as a series of local club nights, as well as a record label. The label @dkmntl launched in 2009 with an EP by duo Juju & Jordash, and fifteen years later, continues to release all manner of innovative club sounds, from house to experimental techno, by the likes of upsammy, Sam Goku, Olof Dreijer & Diva Cruz.

For this edition of Carhartt WIP Radio, Olf van Elden AKA @interstellarfunk, who currently runs and oversees Dekmantel Records, created a mix featuring mostly exclusive, soon to be released brand-new Dekmantel music. Carhartt WIP Radio July 2024: Dekmantel Records

This month’s show features the Belgian record label and music festival @meakusma, which began in 2004 as a series of events across Brussels and the small eastern Belgium city Eupen, before evolving into a record label in 2008, and a festival in 2016, aiming to celebrate the unclassifiable, through music, installations, and lectures.
 
Since the label’s inception, Meakusma has continued to release a selection of records which defy genre and categorization, from artists such as Madteo, Viola Klein, Tomaga, Charlemagne Palestine, Don’t DJ, Lord Tang, Sam Gendel, or Pretty Sneaky.
 
For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Meakusma’s founders created a sprawling mix exploring the label’s back catalogs, abstract sounds by Roger 23, minimal techno from Detroit’s Terrence Dixon, and twisted electronics by Berlin’s Peter Kock. Leading this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show is @red-lebanese, a French publishing house and independent record label, whose music production arm operates under Studio X8. 

The platform was founded in 2012 by visual artist Pablo Jomaron and musician Quentin Leroy (AKA @madreyy), who bonded as childhood friends over a shared love of graffiti, art, and hip-hop. With a focus on physical media, Red Lebanese has released books and zines, as well as cassette tapes and vinyls from the likes of Rio de Janeiro rapper @adrianobico and Bordeaux MC Prosper.

Carhartt WIP Radio September 2024: Red Lebanese

Carhartt WIP radio travels east and features a funky Origami Productions mix by DJ BAKU. The Japanese based label was born from the 'Tokyo Jam Scene' - an underground movement started in the Shibuya district in 2006 involving musicians, singers, and rappers. The scene encouraged improvisation within the diverse fields of Jazz, hip hop, soul, funk, reggae and rock. The results were unique to those having grown up in Japanese music culture. In 2007, intent on bringing the 'Tokyo Jam Scene' to the world stage, Yoshi Tsushima pulled together a creative team and called it Origami Productions, which now distributes releases to Asia and Europe. The label has since composing, recording, mixing and generating their own artwork, as well as collaborations with painters, photographers, graphic designers, and such musical luminaries as Arrested Development, Hocus Pocus and Stephanie Kay, sharing the music and art of Shibuya with the world. DJ Baku's mix sheds a light into that world. Enjoy.

Hip hop, and you don't stop: this Carhartt WIP radio show brings you Chopped Herring Records, founded in 2001 in Manchester by collector, rare vinyl eBay merchant, and DJ Bob Lipitch aka Pro Celebrity Golf aka Chubby Grooves. Since the beginning his label releases limited edition hip hop vinyl - never released before recordings from back in the day and new music from today's artists - always dope and fresh. The „Three Sinister Syllables“ LP by the artists Pro Celebrity Golf and Jay Glaze from 2004 is probably the record, that put the UK label on the global hip hop map. Carhartt WIP fan Glen Earl Boothe, raised in New Jersey and Philadelphia and now based in Los Angeles, is better known as Knxwledge - an instrumental Hip-Hop producer with a love of Jazz, Soul, old skool Hip-Hop and modern Rap, all of which have a profound effect on his creativity. After dozens of remixes and collections of his countless tracks on Bandcamp (compiled on Leaving Records' 'Anthology' from 2013), Knxwledge has produced for the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Joey Bada$$, released several LP’s on labels like Stones Throw and All City Records and has recently collaborated with Anderson Paak as NxWorries for the LP  “Yes Lawd!”, released on Stones Throw. Carhartt WIP Radio December 2016: Knxwledge - Radio Show

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio Show, we present almost two hours minutes of Trojan Records music, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic reggae label. Curated by Canadian DJ, producer and record collector Scott Monteith, aka Deadbeat, the show sees him dig deep into his personal collection and the archives of Trojan Records to conduct a mix that mirrors the many ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub hues of the British label.
 
Founded in 1968, Trojan introduced reggae to a global audience while scoring UK chart hits with artists such as The Upsetters, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff and The Maytals. Additionally, the label licensed Jamaican music by legendary producers such as Duke Reid and Leslie Kong, helping take their sounds global.
 
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Carhartt WIP has also joined forces with Trojan Records to create a capsule collection featuring feverish graphics by the Chicago based design collective Boot Boyz, who were given access to the vast Trojan graphic archive.

Carhartt WIP Radio August 2018: Deadbeat - Trojan Records Radio Show

This month Carhartt WIP Radio features a musical journey by producer, DJ and Akashik Records co-founder Ringgo Ancheta, aka Mndsgn. Raised with Gospel music at church and B-Boy culture at home in south New Jersey, he began experimenting with beat making when he was 14, before befriending fellow producer Knxwledge. The two would eventually go on to form the influential Klipmode collective.

After moving to Los Angeles, Mndsgn's music flourished, catching the attention of labels such Stones Throw and Leaving Records, who put out his albums Yawn Zen, Surface Outtakes and Body Wash. His latest project is titled Snax – a mixtape brimming with esoteric hip hop flavours and freshly cut Mndsgn remixes, and one which also serves as the debut release for his brand new label Ringgo.

About to embark upon a European tour – presented by Carhartt WIP – which will take him to Lisbon, Madrid, Cologne, Berlin, London, The Hague and Milan, we asked him to prepare a show that focuses on the releases of Akashik Records, the little DIY label he has run with his buddies Alima and Shane Sakanoi since 2015. Deep Reggae and heavy Dub: this month we present a show by Mark Ernestus with Tikiman on the mic. As the founder of the legendary Berlin based Hard Wax record store he laid the foundation for Berlin's electronic club music scene in 1989. As one half of Basic Channel (aka Maurizio), he gained international fame with a hybrid of Dub and Techno. As part of the duo Rhythm & Sound he refined this signature sound alongside a range of vocalists - most extensively Tikiman aka Paul St. Hilaire. For Carhartt WIP Radio they prepared a mix loaded with rare gems by Reggae legends such as Prince Jazzbo, Nitty Gritty, or Ken Boothe. Tune in and get absorbed by real weigthy bass pleasure!

Carhartt WIP Radio July 2012: Mark Ernestus with Tikiman - Radio Show

Los Angeles based DJ, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and music producer Madlib let his mind free wheeling and prepared a Carhartt WIP Radio show that accompanies the Medicine Show Europe Tour 2012 featuring Freddie Gibbs, J Rocc, and himself. His mix features unreleased, unheard, and exclusive Madlib material in combination with some known stuff out of his musical universe. An edgy twisted, 47 minutes long collage that melds hip hop and audio drama into one big psychedelic trip.

For this month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show we bring you FloFilz, one of Germany’s most in-demand hip hop producers. Since 2013 he has released instrumental records on labels such as Melting Pot Music and Jakarta, with a style that seductively blends soul- and jazz-influenced grooves.

FloFilz’s first two albums as a beatmaker were collaborative works, and in late 2014 he released his first solo LP titled "Metronom". Four instrumental albums have since followed, cementing his reputation as jazz-connoisseur producer, who seeks to open up the genre to a new generation of listeners.

For his Carhartt WIP Radio show, he melds older work with tracks from his upcoming album "Transit". As usual we also sat down to speak to this month’s host, chatting about his upbringing, Bach and J Dilla, and his thoughts on Germany’s hip hop scene. Carhartt WIP Radio June 2019: FloFilz Radio Show

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Motown, the iconic record label launched in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan by Berry Gordy Jr., Carhartt WIP will release a thirteen-piece capsule collection in the coming weeks. The collaboration honors a label that reshaped the sound of American pop music, diversifying its airwaves in the process. 

To mark the collection launch, we reached out to Detroit native Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann and asked him to prepare a strictly Motown music Carhartt WIP Radio show, that displays his personal love for the label.
 
As Moodymann is not man for hasty reactions, he delivered a detailed mix featuring rare b-sides, interviews and live recordings by Motown artists like Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Steve Wonder, Kem and Dazz Band. Asked about his very own feelings towards his mix, Kenny Dixon Jr. simply says: “No matter where I‘m standing it’s good to hear home sometimes. These songs are woven into the soundtrack of my own personal movie.”  There is nothing more to add, only: enjoy the ride!

While London’s music scene has rightly received considerable attention in recent years thanks to its burgeoning grime and drill scenes, the work of west London MC Lord Apex eschews this categorization, with a sound that skews more stateside. Notably, he cites Knxwledge as one of his favorite producers, and his particular strain of neo-soul infused beats. Much of Lord Apex’s music sits within this hard-to-define genre, which seeks to provide a contemporary framework for hip hop’s lingua franca. But despite the evident sonic influence of American rap on Lord Apex’s, his smooth distinct drawl and subject matter leave you in little doubt of his London credentials.

For Carhartt WIP Radio, Lord Apex takes us on a rhythmic journey, assembled by his friend DJ Corrado, showcasing his own vast catalogue of tracks. As ever, we also sat down with this month’s host to discuss his musical upbringing, how London influence’s his sound, and hip hop on both sides of the pond.
