Resiliencia Vol. 1 es un compilado de IME, el gremio de artistas electrónicos independientes de Chile, que se unieron en un esfuerzo conjunto para crear un fondo de asistencia tras el estallido social y el COVID-19. 

¿Qué está pasando en Chile en el sector de la música?
El estallido social que hemos vivido en Chile desde Octubre de 2019, y el actual estado de emergencia, toque de queda y cuarentena decretada por la amenaza del Covid-19, ha generado el cese casi absoluto de la actividad profesional ligada a la música. Datos recientes de una encuesta realizada desde el sector de la música independiente, reflejan que desde el brote de Coronavirus en Chile se han cancelado al menos 91,1% de los eventos y producciones musicales, junto con el cierre de clubes y bares.
 
¿Cómo afecta a IME?
Han sido 6 duros meses de incertidumbre para el trabajo de nuestrxs artistas, que en su gran mayoría no cuentan con contratos de trabajo permanente y que viven principalmente de sus presentaciones y shows en vivo. Expertos en políticas sanitarias apuntan a que los eventos musicales y deportivos no volverán hasta al menos septiembre de 2021. 
 
¿Qué está haciendo IME?
Hoy, como medida de asistencia para lxs miembrxs de nuestro gremio, estamos levantando esta campaña para crear un fondo de asistencia de apoyo a aquellxs que tengan mayor riesgo financiero.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio features PRÍNCIPE (@principepromos), a vibrant record label from Lisbon, Portugal. Established in 2011, the imprint dedicates its work strictly to contemporary electronic music typically from the peripheral living zones of Portugal’s capital. As the label elaborates on its Discogs page: “We want to make sure that the amazing work being produced here, be it house, techno, kuduro, batida, kizomba, funaná, tarrachinha or any other new aesthetic development, will not remain unheard outside of our clubs, cellphones and homes anymore.”

Today almost all PRÍNCIPE artists – such as DJ Marfox, DJ Nigga Fox, Nidia, Niagara and DJ Firmeza – come from Lisbon’s suburbs, where they create dizzying up-tempo kuduro, sensual kizomba, and spunky tarraxinha beats mixed with techno, house and beyond. Together with the four people behind the label – visual artist Márcio Matos; DJ and journalist José Moura; Nelson Gomes, member of the Portuguese experimental leftfield band Gala Drop; and André Ferreira, who takes care of press, promotion and bookings – they have brought PRÍNCIPE’s signature sounds to the world.

For Carhartt WIP Radio, the PRÍNCIPE crew have conducted a mix that showcases their ambitious blend of invigorating, genre-chopping sounds with brand new and still to be released music.

Carhartt WIP Radio November 2020: PRÍNCIPE Radio Show

For our last show in 2020, we bring you US DJ and producer @kush_jones, famed for his fresh take on the footwork genre. As one of the most prolific new electronic dance musicians out there, the Bronx-based artist has kept his fans satisfied throughout the past year with monthly releases on his Bandcamp site, including his “Strictly 4 My CDJZ” series, which has showcased his talent as a multifaceted producer.

His powerful, fast-paced footwork sound flirts with acid, drum and bass, hip-hop, house, jungle, techno, and funk, but despite its eclectic nature, his music remains carefully crafted, possessing both a clarity of vision and a hyper-modern sensibility. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Kush Jones has conducted a mix consisting exclusively of his own material – some of which has already been released, with other tracks debuting for the first time.  

As usual we sat down with our host for a digital face to face, to talk about his artistic aims, possessing a relentless work ethic, his passion for footwork and why “Kush Jones can do what he wants.”

Carhartt WIP Radio December 2020: Kush Jones Radio Show

For the first Carhartt WIP Radio show of the new year, we welcome @pan_hq, the multifaceted Berlin label founded in 2008 by DJ, producer and artist Bill Kouligas. Forward-thinking and conceptually fluid since its inception, the label’s output includes music by zeitgeist-defining artists such as German “klang” architect Rashad Becker, British musician and DJ Lee Gamble, his compatriot and former Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey, American experimental music producer Yves Tumor, and Chinese artist and musician Pan Daijing. In recent months, PAN has released ambitious, timely records by the likes of German artist Anne Imhof, Berlin-based, Finnish electronic music duo Amnesia Scanner, Venezuelan multihyphenate Arca, New York-based performance artist Eartheater and UK producer Beatrice Dillon, whose debut album “Workaround” was one of the most stunningly unique, rhythmic experiments in 2020.

Stylistically the output covers experimental drone sounds, sonic collages, futuristic takes on club music, and mesmerizing forward-thinking electronics. In addition, PAN has garnered a reputation for its striking, conceptual artworks that accompany each release, created by Kouligas himself and creatives like German photographer Daniel Sannwald, the cloud-based design and research cluster PWR Studio, and the iconic German photographer Thomas Ruff.

For Carhartt WIP Radio Bill Kouligas put together a show that spans almost two hours. Exploring almost twelve years of PAN music, it unites older tunes by the likes of Afrikan Sciences or Spectre with more recent music by Elysia Crampton or Crystallmess.

As our upcoming RELEVANT PARTIES podcast, released on January 15th, will feature Bill Kouligas speaking to British journalist Chal Ravens about PAN’s history and more, we skipped the typical in-depth interview with our host and simply asked Kouligas five quick questions on how he selected the music for his Carhartt WIP Radio show, PAN’s future plans, when he feels most at peace.

Carhartt WIP Radio January 2021: PAN Radio Show

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio is brought to you by the legendary UK artist @goldie-official, introducing his nascent label @fallentree1hundred. 

A man who needs little introduction, Goldie earned a reputation as one of the UK’s most celebrated graffiti artists, before becoming known for his work as a producer, DJ and label owner. He brought international renown to the world of drum and bass, via his label Metalheadz, while also releasing genre-defining tracks like “Terminator,” and the aptly-named debut LP "Timeless". In 1994, British music critic Simon Reynolds noted that “Goldie revolutionized jungle not once but three times.”

In the spring of 2020, Goldie unveiled his latest venture, the record label Fallen Tree 1Hundred. A platform for music from “off the beaten track,” as he describes it, initial releases have come from the likes of UK blues and soul artist @natalieduncan-music, and Bristol-based multi-genre duo @degrees-of-freedom. The resulting show, curated by Goldie himself, is suitably eclectic, offering an enticing glimpse into the world of a label still in its relative infancy. 

As ever, we also sat down for a quick chat with this month’s host, discussing his plans for Fallen Tree 1Hundred, the 25th anniversary of "Timeless", and his own plans to release new music.

This month Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes @yyyooouuuttthhh, the Manchester-based label founded in 2017 by Andrew Lyster, aka DJ Lyster. Eclectic in style, the label’s output has spanned dubstep, electro, hip-hop, IDM, techno, wave and other experimental abstractions. The result is a captivating and thoroughly contemporary sound, with an equally compelling visual identity, likely owing to Lyster’s own design background. 

The eclecticism of YOUTH is not limited to its sound, however, with an artist roster that includes local acts such as FUMU and @sockethead, as well as the visual artist and producer @dijit from Egypt, enigmatic producer @ssiege, and @hoshina Anniversary from Tokyo, Japan. Additionally, the label has released work by UK producer @joy-orbison, via his Sin Falta pseudonym.

For Carhartt WIP Radio DJ Lyster prepared a trip through the nascent archives of YOUTH, to “hopefully give an idea of the label's past and an idea of where it’s going.” 

We also sat down with Lyster to discuss the YOUTH’s origins, curating an album from a body of tracks, and the enduring importance of record labels in a digital era.
