Carhartt WIP Radio

To accompany the CTM festival in Berlin we feature a Carhartt WIP Radio special on this years program. The show was mixed by the Australian artist Lawrence English who will also play at the 2015 CTM edition. It features music by himself as well as by festival participants like Gazelle Twin, Alec Empire, Emptyset and more. The 16th edition of the Berlin based CTM festival will feature concerts by artists such as US producer Craig Leon, a collaborative A/V performance by Alec Empire and violinist Zan Lyons as well as by musicians like ATOM TM, Electric Wizard, Emptyset, Simian Mobile Disco, Evian Christ, teen hip hop newcomer Yung Lean and an improvisational performance by Carter Tutti Void.

Earlier in 2025, Wevie Stonder returned to Skam with their first album in 16 years, and such an occasion requires further celebration, no? Sure Beats Living delivers more of the collective’s signature cheekiness, and this mix for Bleep unravels all of the wildly eclectic sounds and styles that have powered over two decades of iconoclasm.

This is probably the only mix you’ll find that travels from drill and bass to Ecuadorian synth cumbia to 40s jazz. Constant stylistic U-turns are the name of the game, and as the group recontextualise tracks with comedic skits and spoken word pieces, you never know which little sonic nugget is going to be the jumping off point for a completely opposite yet cleverly connected world of sound. Wevie Stonder’s own strange crossing between avant experimentation and punkish irreverence sits between the jangling bass guitar of Gary Le Strange, whose reclusive hikikomori-induced paranoia is delivered in an ironic nasally britpop voice, and the wonky synth funk of Devonwho with lush crisp beats and thrumming jazzy keys.

Bucolic Moog wash and lounge piano tiptoe beneath a Radiophonic Workshop-esque segment testing out the possibilities of synthesisers; “Finally, an example of rhythmic electronic music,” says the posh presenter, introducing a full and proper rinsing with some classic Squarepusher chops. Amen breaks are chucked in the shredder and glued back together with thick jungle bass, then dissipate into Hiroshi Yoshimura’s birdsong bliss. With these disparate tracklist transitions, each track in itself brings together unlikely combinations: further melodrama from Gary Le Strange pairs southern crooning with jaunty harpsichord, bass punches and cascading pianos flow between J Dilla’s slow hip hop hits, and Polibio Mayorga merges accordion and cowbells with the theatrics of expressively vintage synth sounds, brass and electronics trading lines on ‘Muñequita Blanca’.

Ross McMillan, known professionally as Carlos Nilmmns, is a Scottish electronic music producer, DJ, and composer originally from Glasgow. His interest in electronic music began in the early 1990s, influenced by the local scene and early releases from Glasgow’s 23rd Precinct Records. By the late 1990s, he began producing music and studying audio engineering, laying the foundation for his career.

As of 2025 - He is now focusing on various projects for Laurent Garnier's label Cod3 Qr and Ornaments. His collaboration song with Genoveva is featured on the TRAX 40 compilation as reported by DJ Mag has been nominated for 3 Grammys. As a performer, McMillan has played DJ and live sets at clubs and festivals across Europe and internationally under various aliases. He continues to produce, perform, and collaborate on projects across electronic music, film, and the performing arts.

The Life Recorder identity was born in 2006 with the first steps in production. Over time, Kriss became one of the French representatives of a “Deep” sound influenced by Detroit and a certain musical vision. On the DJing side, we have been able to find him through the years behind the decks showing his ability to mix together Deep house and techno at Globus (Tresor)Berlin, Night Moves (Jane Fitz's party) in London..Paris, Manchester , Belgrade, Tbilisi to name a few...

Carhartt WIP Radio says rest in peace to 50WEAPONS - the Berlin based 'techno plus' label that was formed by Modeselektor in 2005. Already from the start the game plan for 50WEAPONS was stopping business after 50 releases. Now, the label is due to close down, but has decided to go out with a royal bang. Specifically, 50WEAPONS have organised a world tour presented by Carhartt WIP that will stop in towns like Paris, Manchester, Hamburg, Montreal or New York. Furthermore they will release a limited collector's box set, consisting of eleven pieces of vinyl, and a USB device with twenty-two tracks - the last scheduled release by the label. For Carhartt WIP Radio label head honchos Modeselektor prepared a one hour good-bye show in which they tried to mix the tracks from the last couple of 50WEAPONS releases in a way that would make sense to the listener and to Modeselektor as DJs.

Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes Glasgow's finest address for musical dreams off the beaten track: Optimo Music, founded in 2009 by Keith McIvor aka JD Twitch. Originally Optimo was the name of a regular Sunday nighter at Sub Club in Glasgow, where the duo JD Twitch and JG Wilkes earnt the reputation for mixing all kinds of genres together. Since the night was suspended in 2010, both have been constantly gigging around the world while JD Twitch dedicated himself to his label, its club friendly subdivision Optimo Trax as well as many diverse projects such as the charity label Autonomous Africa. Till today Optimo Music's ramified artist line up includes old and new artists like Golden Teacher, Chris Carter,  Peter Zummo, The Twins and Sex Judas among others. For Carhartt WIP Radio, JD Twitch has compiled an all Optimo Music mix in which he tried to reflect what it is about each release that connects them to the superordinate ideal of Optimo Music.

Carhartt WIP Radio December 2015: JD Twitch - Optimo Music Radio Show

Welcome to the world of Leaving Records, founded in Los Angeles in the year 2008. The label was launched by the experimental musician/producer Matthewdavid, and visual artist/designer Jesselisa Moretti. Initially the company had a strong focus on tape releases featuring a wide and wild mixture of genres ranging from odd hip hop, experimental, psychedelic and rock to Glitch, IDM and synthpop. Their artist roster included now famed artists like Julia Holter, Sun Araw, Diva, and Ras G. Since a while Leaving also focus deeply on contemporary ambient, New Age and avant-garde celestial sounds by old and new artists like High Wolf, M. Geddes Gengras, Dntel or Laraaji. For Carhartt WIP Radio Matthewdavid compiled a Leaving Records show that mirrors his label perfectly. His mix starts with hip hop and beyond grooves full of glitch sounds and abstracts electronic tones only to melt afterwards into an ocean of ambient and New Age spheres that are made to elevate. To accompany the CTM festival 2016 in Berlin we feature a Carhartt WIP Radio special. The show was prepared by the artist, musician, curator and Morphine Records manager Rabih Beaini, who functions as a co-curator of this years CTM edition. His mix features music by himself as well as by CTM participants like Lena Willikens, Pauline Oliveros, Aisha Devi or Jerusalem In My Heart. The 17th edition of the Berlin based festival operates under the slogan New Geographies - a title that examines today’s rapidly collapsing borders and emerging new hybrid topographies. Beside well-established DJs and producers such as Laurel Halo, Floating Points or Kassem Mosse many artists and sound cultures are invited, that come from less familiar countries and localities.

This month Carhartt WIP shades some light on Magazine records with a show by label co-owner, DJ and producer Barnt. The Cologne based artist is one of the few new faces in the global electronic music scene, whose music makes a fine distinction and turns established formulas against the grain. Beside being a DJ since 20 years he already released music on  labels like Cómeme, Mule Musiq and Hingefinger as well as Magazine, the label he established with his old North German friends Jens-Uwe Beyer and Crato in 2010. For Carhartt WIP Radio Barnt took a ride through the Magazine catalogue that consists of work by artists such as Jens-Uwe Beyer, Barnt, the super group Cologne Tape, Wolfgang Voigt, or Wendy Gondeln among others. Barnt's mix features some of their music as well as some soon to be released, new material from unknown artists for the unwritten Magazine future.
