California Dreamin' is a song by the Mamas and Papas, released as a single in 1965 and the following year on the album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. The song was written in 1963 by John and Michelle Phillips, the main members of the group, during their stay in New York.
In 2004, the song was ranked 89th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Best Songs.
The song has been the subject of many covers by US and foreign bands and singers: among others, Dik Dik in 1966 with lyrics translated by Mogol under the title Sognando la California, José Feliciano (1968), Bobby Womack (1969), the Beach Boys (1986), Jann Arden (2007) and America performed it live at several concerts. In 2005 it was remixed by the Global Deejays along with San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) in the single San Francisco Dreamin'. In 2015, singer-songwriter Sia recorded a cover of the song for the soundtrack of the film San Andreas, which was released in May that year and starred actor Dwayne Johnson. Accordionist Peppino Principe performs the instrumental version for the album Per voi giovani 'I più grandi successi mondiali' - Beat (Captain 83)
Many films have also used the song as a musical basis, among them: Carlo Vanzina's Sognando la California (1992), Robert Zemeckis' Forrest Gump (1994), Wong Kar-wai's Hong Kong Express (1994) where it is obsessively repeated eight times, Richard Lowenstein's And He Died with a Felafel in His Hand (2001), Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story, Alexandre Aja's The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Cristian Nemescu's California Dreamin' (2008), Ben Stassen's The Adventures of Sammy (2010), Hotel Artemis (2018) starring Jodie Foster, an episode of Jackass, the US TV show Saturday Night Live and also in the last episode of the second series of Californication. In 2019, the cover recorded by José Feliciano in 1968 is part of the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood set in 1969 California. In 2022, the song, in the Beach Boys' 1986 version, is used in an episode of the fourth season of the award-winning Netflix television series Stranger Things.
