Review: VAMOS Reggae may not be the first music that comes to mind when English speakers think of Latin America, but in fact, there is a long history of reggae influencing musicians in Latin American countries. Panama, for example, has been a major player in Spanish-language reggae, going back to the 1970s. Many rock en español bands from Mexico, Colombia and Argentina have incorporated either reggae or its predecessor ska. And reggaetón, which has been dominated by Puerto Rico, is a hybrid mixture of hip-hop, dancehall reggae and salsa. So bearing all that in mind, it makes perfect sense for Carlos Wiltshire, a.k.a. Carlos de Nicaragua, to draw on both reggae and Latin/Hispanic influences on his exuberant, energetic single, “Vamos” (which means “Let’s Go” in Spanish). Wiltshire was born on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast, and “Vamos” reflects that: the tune has a variety of Caribbean influences ranging from reggae to salsa/Afro-Cuban music. “Vamos,” which is performed en español, has both Afro-Caribbean appeal and Latin/Hispanic appeal. But Wiltshire’s single is not reggae in the strict sense any more than it is salsa/Afro-Cuban music in the strict sense. Rather, Wiltshire is going for a musical hybrid that incorporates elements of reggae (including dubwise and the music that came after it, dancehall) and salsa as well as electronic club music. “Vamos” is decidedly club-friendly, much like reggaetón. The highly rhythmic song is not an exact replica of the reggaetón coming out of Puerto Rico, but it has a similar club aesthetic and could easily appeal to fans of artists like Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, Ivy Queen and Don Omar. “Vamos” is party music, and Wiltshire clearly wants to get listeners out on the dance floor. If a club DJ played “Vamos” between recordings by Yankee and Don Omar, it would fit right in and would not be out of place. The mix of salsa and reggae is an expression of Carlos' constant search of the richness that naturally flows from mixing, rallying him to one of his favorite poets, Nicolas Guillen, of whom he put the « Sensemaya » poem into a song and who used to highlight that, in reference to Cuba : « there are no blacks, no whites, only mulattos ». It is the mixing of genres that pushes Carlos to constantly create and innovate. Therefore, besides salsa and reggae, one can find in Carlos' music many other influences...
