Songwriting Sessions THE-MOMENT  Flowers Bugs & Butterflies

As the sixteenth episode of the, 'Lateral Listening' series, the NFSA presents Brianne Curran with her piece, 'Stalin and the Berlin Bush' (2015).
Recorded and co produced by Adenan Ahmad.

This composition was created especially for the NFSA collection in July 2015.

From the artist: Out of deep respect and great humility as an Australian, I feel that making efforts to learn the culture of the Traditional Owners of the continent through direct contact with community is of paramount importance. ‘Connection to country’ has become something of deep contemplation for me.

Having moved recently to Berlin, the recording has been part of my process in connecting to this foreign land:

A late evening in Berlin, making my way from my apartment in Kreuzberg to the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park taking recordings on the way - It was memorials like these all around Berlin on my first trip in 2011 that triggered my realisation of how little I knew about the history of the Australian Aboriginals. Indeed, ‘Lest We Forget’ but perhaps first, what have we forgotten?

Field recordings were taken along the track and pieced together in a raw, natural manner in the final composition.
The violin improvisations were recorded in different areas of the Soviet War Memorial.

From the start of her musical studies at age 3 in classical violin, Brianne has since been involved with the folk music scene in Australia, contemporary and improvised music, and free jazz, experimental, noise music. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Jazz/Contemporary performance in 2009 through the Australian National University, and the Australian Institute of Music as a scholarship holder. 
From 2004 – 2008 she focused her time out in the Australian bush often in isolation, exploring ways to express and connect with the surrounding landscape, the moment, and space through music. She watched how this process affected her intentions when performing, aiming to expand her understanding also of the role of an artist. The sounds and techniques she developed in this time were the external outcomes of more internal practices and thought.
Brianne continues to explore and develop her art in life.

The sixth single from Malou Beauvoir’s  « SPIRITWALKER » album,  
PAPA DAMBALLAH speaks  to one of the most ancient and revered spirits in Haitian Vaudou. Creator of all life, Papa Damballah, the great white snake,  represents wisdom, morality, creation, and equity .  
The song recalls we are all his children and asks for his protection and guidance in  situations of injustice.  Beauvoir’s personal relationship with this spirit is emphasized during the spoken word passage when she « thanks him and the spirits that guide her everyday of her life for their support ». 
Originally recorded for her IS THIS LOVE  album, the song appears on the SPIRITWALKER album  as the closing song and was chosen as the end credit song in  Suzan Beraza’s film « MASSACRE RIVER: The Woman Without a Country  » which has aired on PBS over 1500 times  since Oct 1 2019 new dates are announced in November.
