In 2016 I began working with poet and film director Juan Carlos Galeano to develop the soundtrack for his poetic documentary El Rio, which is a heartfelt and beautifully crafted movie that narrates the delicate physical and emotional connections between the mythical Amazon River and the local communities that live across the river’s ecosystem. The film has been selected for screening at the prestigious 2019 Ethnografilm Festival in París and has won the 2019 Gala Award at the Cinema Verde Environmental International Film Festival.

Juan Carlos asked me to develop a conceptual sound for this movie. Working on a soundtrack that was supposed to deepens the underlying emotional content of the story led me to generate a great deal of ideas which I later expanded through my work with the guitar-bass-drums trio I formed upon my arrival to the city of Worcester, Massachusetts in summer 2016. El Rio is an album that builds upon these ideas and the inspired ecopoetry of the movie. But the album also intends to put into motion my aesthetic concept of ‘world jazz explorations’: the blending of diverse cultural and musical voices into one creative, fluid conversation.
