I feel like I speak for a lot of us when I say this past year has been challenging and full of a lot of heavy changes. As the days start to get longer I feel like the light is finally starting to come back. This mix is essentially a musical representation of a lot of emotions I’ve been feeling over the past few months. I decided to not focus on technical mixing so much with this per se but was more aiming to showcase a collection of songs new and old from over the years that have helped me process and move forward. A year and a half ago, That African approached Civillian with a challenge: to collaborate and create a “good” mix of current-era rap music. As long time purveyors of Golden-Era Hip-Hop™, they couldn’t ignore the infectious good vibe that exploded onto the dance floor when the DJ hit a stride in a set of good modern rap. As fans of quality hip-hop, they also couldn’t ignore how generic, corny, and generally bad a lot of it is.
Thus, they had their work cut out for them: to weed through the whack, and bring you only the finest of this new rap phenomenon.
