Evan Feigenbaum, Vice President for Studies at the Carnegie Endowment and twice U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, interviewed Jack Hu, Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan and the J. Reid and Polly Anderson Professor of Manufacturing at Michigan Engineering – and soon to become the Provost at the University of Georgia. We called him because Michigan has developed a network of partnerships with Chinese institutions and companies, in some cases in areas that are changing the face and nature of manufacturing. We wanted to understand not just what China (and Asia, for that matter) mean to an American research university, but also how these collaborations reflect local-level considerations, strategies, and advantages.
