SNEEZEL THE WEASEL By The Black Bawlerz

The Remote Controllers project was devised by Carousel, as a response to the Covid-19 restrictions to give opportunity for musicians with a learning disability to create music together online. 10 musicians across Sussex joined the project and met weekly.

The aim of the project was to work with a network of musicians both collaboratively and remotely to experiment with ways of working together, building on musical skills and creativity. We worked towards creating an original piece of music with the ambition to record and perform at a live event once Covid-19 restrictions were eased.

Everyone was given a Remote Controller’s pack which included an iPad loaded with accessible music apps and figurenote resources, which included a whiteboard and Kazoos.

Here’s an introduction from Remote Controller Bethan:-

‘‘We are the Remote Controllers. This is Ross, Louis, Seb, Theo and Flo. There’s also Elliott and Laura.

We have been meeting up on Zoom every week in two groups. We met in person for the first time at the Brighton Open Air Theatre performing our song at the Carousel event Lark in the Park.

We have enjoyed being together and making music. We think laughter goes a long way and we’ve met new friends. 
 
We all play different instruments - guitars, keyboard, saxophone, iPads App called thumb jam, bongos, kazoos and singing.  We warm up our voices, do catch-up news and then music. We use whiteboard for figurenotes to help choose notes to play.

We’ve been making a song together, a big piece called ‘Tomorrowness: Nostalgia’s here today’. It’s about Brighton city, love, the pier, the beach and I’ve enjoyed making it all. I hope you enjoy it too!”
