The latest house duo to emerge from the Parisian underground bid us bonjour with this stellar debut on Dialect, fusing retroist 80s leanings with brain mulching techno voodoo. Title track ‘Scandale’ and ‘Lame De Fond’ share the same pulsing sequenced heart, transplanted from Carpenter soundtracks and Italo disco classics and then zapped with a thousand volts of warped, detuned and malfunctioning synthesizer electricity. ‘El Topo’ replaces the bristling sequences with a spiky post punk snarl courtesy of live guitars, bass and organ (a la Suicide no less) but retains the twisted electronics for a woozy half time experiment in dancefloor psychedelia. Essential for fans of Joakim, Ivan Smagghe and early Gesaffelstein productions.

French duo from Paris. I'll be honest, I don't know much about them (Patriiiick?!) but they've already garnered support by Chloé, David Shaw, Tim Paris, and Dombrance among others. And rightly so - this is some excellent new musica from our European friends. "Scandale" is both minimal and retroist, utilizing 80s drum machines (Jomox I think) with old sequencers and synths to conjure up that electronic voodoo usually saved for the Norwegian / Swedish crews of Frak, Borft, Sex Tags Mania etc. All those clever things they teach you in synthesis (glide functions, de-tune, oscillator fine tune etc) executed brilliantly and always in sympathy with the dancefloor. "Lame De Fond" uses equally sophisticated synthesis techniques but goes on a late night Italian-tinged theme... that is, I think - by this point the synth lines were completely infiltrating my cerebrum and I started to shut down as a human and slowly metamorphose into a robot. "El Topo" was the final jam I needed before ripping off all my clothes to reveal a fully chrom'd body piece. Then proceeding to strut a half-tempo robo-walk across the saloon, nodding at the cybernetic barmaid and flicking her a wink of my eye before leaving to do laser sword battle with some invader from a unwelcome star cluster. Yagetme?

Sometimes, collaborations only make sense when you hear the results for the first time. This isn't one of those times. No, this was a match made in heaven from the get go. Punk attitudes and club aesthetics like peanut butter and chocolate. For our premiere off the 'Caraxes' EP, deviant duo Il Est Vilaine have turned in in a dark 'n' dirty slung out remix of 'Incognito', equal parts psych, dub and synth pop. I wish they'd played this one in school assembly instead of the sh*t hymns we had to sing along to.
