28th Episode of Cartel Podcast with Hypnoskull

June 2022 marked the exact 30th anniversary of German/Belgian Patrick Stevens (°1973) project hypnoskull which was started in 1992, rooted in the aftermath of the first wave of industrial music but as well in the humid warehouses of the early techno scene of the nineties and the underground stages of harsh noise. One of the pioneers to combine industrial music with techno resulting in legendary releases on the German cult-label ant-zen, numerous live performances all over the globe in iconic clubs like CBGB’s New York, Rex Paris, KitKat Berlin and cities like Moscow, Beirut, Los Angeles, Chicago and so on, this one-man project, sometimes expanded with artists and performers from contemporary dance, theatre and film, is as unpredictable as the ideology behind it: a lo-fi, harsh, monotone assault of political thoughts, subversive rants and sheer emotional outbursts towards a society first questioned, deconstructed, destroyed and left behind without a solution or a better plan. Music as a weapon and as well as a tool for self-dissection. In recent years, hypnoskull got acknowledged by lots of producers and artists in the field of industrial techno, resulting in releases, collaborations, remix work and production for many of the big players in this genre.

For this podcast, hypnoskull selected a number of brandnew tracks and releases as well as some forgotten old gems. Crossing every possible border of whatever written and unwritten rules of whatsoever ‘scene’ or subculture, this mix fiercely shows what it is still about for Patrick Stevens, after 30 years of producing, playing live and deejaying, as he states himself: ‘I get claustrophobic when I witness how the techno scene became lately. Techno became the soundtrack provided by good looking boys and girls who strive to make their business plans come true, in clubs that degraded themselves from laboratories to corporate boxes of emptiness. That’s why I selected both some radical memories from tracks and styles which were once as well played in the clubs, and some brilliant music by new, young and emerging producers. Belgium is as well coming back from a low, especially in the city of Brussels, where plenty of astonishing producers be them Belgians or expats gather and create a new wave of exciting electronic music as we speak. That was a long time ago. They’re in here as well by the likes of Maltash, Elaina Vierce and Raum. And Paris as well, check Age of hate, ZNZL, Prophän,… There’s a great connection between both cities also. I truly believe great stuff will happen again very soon.’

Soil Records is releasing their album tomorrow to commemorate its fifth anniversary. As we wrap up our analysis of this release, let's review the 10 tracks that comprise the latest CD. Right from the start, we have emphasized that the greatest strength of this work is its stylistic diversity. It brings together various styles and interpretations, encompassing what we can consider post-punk or any musical genre derived from this movement.

The CD kicks off with "#546," a piece by Takahiro Mukai, a Japanese artist known for releasing nearly 50 albums since 2014. For this release on the Valencian label, Mukai contributes a track that blends influences from sci-fi techno, industrial, and experimental genres. "Collar de Perro Viejo" marks the debut of Alextanko, a new project with a distinct personal style. In this track of abstract composition, Alextanko presents an ordered chaos where each element freely circulates following specific guidelines.

"The House of Mirrors" is a collaboration between Last Chance and Henry Grey, two projects whose origins remain unknown. Together, they showcase their inclination towards organic darkwave. Information about SZYL is also scarce, as Ian Broch, the head of Soil Records, informed us that many of these debut projects involve renowned figures who have chosen to remain anonymous for the time being. SZYL's "Sex Girl" leans towards simple yet effective electro, featuring a rhythmic structure, a relatively straightforward bassline, and a seductive vocal performance embodying the essence of the track's title. Yansyet and Namesis, who released a track on Valley Of Tears 4 last year, make a return on Soil Records with "Better." In this track, the two Russian projects skillfully blend the energy and rawness of EBM with reimagined electronic textures.
T.D.D, another artist about whom we lack information, adds to this album with "Acid Ocarina," a track characterized by a distinctive sound structure and a techno-oriented style. It features an arpeggiated bassline and various sharp textures, possibly reminiscent of the sound of an acid ocarina. The melody continuously emerges and integrates with the rhythm. "Paranoid Visions" by Delectro, a Colombian artist, delivers techno with a higher level of forcefulness compared to the previous tracks. It showcases a strident line that intensifies its energy.

Undisclosed 1122, a fairly recent project from Colombia, joins this album with "Trouble Mind." This track is dominated by powerful synth lines and demonstrates excellent post-production work. German artist Dillon Steele, artistically known as The Marquis is Dead, contributes "Jealous Freak," which combines the rawness of metal, industrial, and electronic genres. Jk Flesh concludes this album, consisting of 50 tracks by different artists, with "Enduring Endurance." It presents degraded techno, devoid of harmonics and pushed to the limits of saturation.

Tallinn-based producer Dharma Doom has performed and released music under many aliases and groups, with each collaboration and side project revealing a different slice of the wide spectrum of styles and sounds in his arsenal. He is something of a shapeshifter, showing up one night as one half of Ost Euro to deliver floor-filling minimal techno improvisations and then reappearing on the next to perform a raw and emotional noise set with his other trio project Keetai. Through years of moving between various mediums and expressions of sound, he has developed a subtle yet distinct sonic language — one that is often menacing and gritty, but also intimate and meditative.

His new solo EP, “A Place Between Places”, feels like a 7-track guided meditation through ideas and influences absorbed from years of side projects, experimentations and collaborations — combined and refined into a rich collage of club music and textural ambient.
