This EP has been such a long and challenging journey... We spent about two years writing and recording this album.  During that time, we went through some things that were really difficult for us, both as a band and as a family. Lots of moving, loss of friendships, loss of a parent... And lots of change, some good and some painful. Through all of that we were writing and recording what would become L.A. Bound, which manifested itself as the idea that even as darkness surrounds you, there is always light to be found. I feel really lucky that we can take all of those negative experiences from the last years and turn them into something beautiful, that hopefully people will enjoy and identify with.

Finally, to those of you who have shared our music with friends and family, to those of you who have supported us through everything and to those of you who consider us your friend, thank you so much. We really love you and appreciate you. As always, we'll be L.A. Bound.

"Our ‘broken down’ ep has been in the making for a really long time. Technically, only three years, but there was about six years of living we went through for any of this to come to fruition. So nearly a decade. 

‘broken down’ is about unconscious hurt that isn’t communicated, losing people you love, flying high, falling low and always contemplating if you’re good enough. It’s about desire, wondering with a whispered hope, and seeing only darkness while expecting light. It’s an attempt at honest optimism that doesn’t seek to obscure. 

Its sound is a culmination of some of our biggest loves/influences and a continuation of who we are as artists. It’s also a testament to the growing number of talented people who worked to make this project a reality. We couldn’t be more thankful to hear their contribution to our music. 

‘broken down’ represents embracing the chaotic and mundane as something that simply exists and affects us only as much as we allow.

Being broken isn’t always obvious or expressed in the same way. We wanted our new music to communicate a small piece of the different shapes, colors, and sounds being broken can take. All of that to say, let’s be broken down together."

I don’t even know how many hours I’ve spent listening to Lorde, but I’m certain it’s no small number… Pure Heroine without a doubt changed everything for me.  Whenever I’m writing, I am usually meditating on that album, consciously or unconsciously.  This song is so weird, yet so normal - I can’t really put my finger on it.  Who kisses the tar on the highway?  Does that make sense? It’s lines like that, the ones that make me ask questions, those are the ones I love. "When we were writing “Broken Down” we kept thinking we had heard it before. It was one of those melodies that felt like it was discovered more than it was written.  It has a very earthy acoustic sound that takes inspiration from a lot of classic influences. “Broken Down" talks a lot about the feelings that come with depression and anxiety. The feeling of being with someone and thinking you can’t measure up because you’re so broken. To us, this is one of our most honest songs. We hope it removes some of the feelings of isolation that can unfortunately come with these battles.”

"We love a good love song, especially one with piano. “Irene” is melancholy with an underlying sense of longing. It feels very open and honest but also uncertain… It’s a bit sad but with an offering of hope. We also wanted to convey a certain admittance of mortality that comes with needing another person.  The idea that, maybe if you were with the right someone, being ordinary would be the most fulfilling possibility. We’ve all been in a relationship where perhaps there is confusion about where you stand with another person and you’re hoping they feel and think the same way you do.  In that sense, “Irene” has a very relatable message.  Also, super relatable if your name is Irene."

"For this song we wanted an electro-punk sound.  We love new-wave and we love big rousing choruses that have a strong sing-a-long factor. We really wanted to hit that with this song. The lyrics are kind of sarcastic and tongue in cheek. We wanted this to be an empowering song for our fan. “No One Will Ever…” is a  reminder that if you love what you’re doing, that's enough of a reason to keep doing it. Anyone who has ever ventured out of their comfort zone in an attempt to find joy has at some point felt that their journey was an exercise in futility. "This song is really fun! We like it especially because it’s a double entendre from start to finish. That kind of thing is always really fun to write. It’s inspired by a lot of sci-fi media and listening to a lot of Sia. We wanted it to feel like you could be both literally and metaphorically over the moon. - I'm So Broke: 
“'I’m So Broke” sounds like a good time in the midst of a storm. 
We wrote “I’m So Broke" to try and accommodate the feeling of having a bit of debt and how to creatively get it off our chests, which despite having a couple of jobs  remained a pretty common occurrence…
It’s been a rough number of years for us and many, many others. Sometimes it’s nice to get it off our chests. We hope it helps others do the same.
The first time we played it for a live audience was at SXSW and we were surprised that after hearing the first half of the song, people were already singing the chorus back to us by the end. It was a really special moment.
“I’m So Broke” hopeful. Let’s call the situation what it is: some of the lyrics are kind of heavy but the sound is fun and makes you want to dance. Things might be bad now, but they’re going to get better."
