Something About You

Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Depeche Mode was one of the coolest bands in the world to me as a kid in Nashville many eons ago. They made me feel like I was across the Atlantic and discovering a new reality that didn’t involve country music or rock.  I had my heart on my sleeve, and so did this band.  I heard this on KROQ on a summer trip to Los Angeles - there was no DM on the radio in the South in those days - and brought it back home as a secret weapon on mix tapes for friends and, most importantly, girls.  Despite the success of the original from the viewpoint of 2016, whenever I play this tune, it reminds me of the excitement of a song feeling like it’s yours and yours alone.


Enjoy The Silence

I think I first heard Alan Parsons Project’s “Don’t Answer Me” when I saw the video in the 80’s on an old late night Saturday TV show called “Night Flight.”  I was up past my bedtime watching that show after SNL, so the videos and (mostly trippy) short films they showed felt dangerous to a boy that had to go to church in a few hours.  The wonderfully stylized animated video still gives me a strange sense of dread, and the song is perfect.  The chorus hits me in the gut every single time. I must’ve played this a hundred times alone late at night before finally deciding to press “record.”
