“ A carnival?  Maybe I can ask someone where the Casa de Luna is.” he thought.

     The chatter grew stronger with every step. Nathaniel felt encouraged again.Then, he heard another sound, a sound much more interesting. The sound of manic crows.

     “What is going on? Man!”

   Nathaniel  stopped and stood still; soaking in the moment.  He put down his suitcase and stared up at the mesas, squinted his eyes and studied strange bubbling movements at their peaks. Grabbing his suitcase. he walked swiftly toward the mesas.He wanted to make sense of what he was seeing. The closer he got, the more the movement came into focus. He stopped again; perplexed. Then, he  realized the mesas were where the crow sounds were coming from. The bubble movements were crows; two large flocks.  They paced back and forth, their heads undulating in a crazed, frenzied conversation. Maybe it was not a conversation. Maybe they were enacting individual rituals.They seemed to move in unison in a machinelike fashion. Nathaniel felt a tingle of fear. Shaking off the feeling, he continued to move slowly toward the desert carnival.

      Nathaniel heard a sharp metallic screech and turned his head toward the Ferris Wheel. Suddenly, the lights popped on. Green,red, and yellow lights began a slow spin as the Ferris Wheel continued to creak and moan. The chatter of people and the caw of the crows grew in intensity.

     Nathaniel stood in amazement.  “Whoa, that’s freaky. This doesn’t make sense. Wait a minute,where are the people? I don’t see any people”. He froze and studied the carnival. There was not even one person, yet he could hear the distinct sound of people around him. It sent a shiver of electricity up his spine.

     

     Then, he noticed  a small unassuming wagon in the foreground. He had missed it with all the commotion. Walking closer , he realized it may be inhabited; there were lights inside that illuminated the closed curtain. Steps led up to it. “ Maybe , I will ask here,” he thought.

The Reading

Nathaniel wakes to the sound of a car roaring through the desert . It has a cloud of dust behind it. He notices that there is only one headlight on. It is the Shadow People. He knew this because he had shot the headlight out in the alleyways of Nightsville. He started to run, but there was nowhere to go. He decided to stand his ground. As the car stopped, a Shadow Person stepped out and raised his arm toward Nathaniel. A thin black thread meandered through the air and attached itself to Nathaniel's chest. He felt a sudden sharp pain and fell.    The Being of Light looked down on Nathaniel. He instantly knew that he was O.K. He felt his body lift off the desert floor and float inside a cushion of white mist. Looking down, he saw the Shadow Person frozen, as if in freeze frame. As he floated, he felt the love and tenderness of the Being of Light. He was told that the next part of his mission was the most important. He must walk in faith and face the darkness without flinching, with stopping. If he was successful, he would be able to enter the Casa de Luna and much would be revealed to him.

His black crow tattoo. It was inked on his right bicep. A message of darkness hissed through his brain like a slow midnight sludge. He knew it somehow came from the tattoo, but did not know how or why. Despair and self-doubt bubbled relentlessly under the surface of his consciousness. The connection with the dark whispers faded during the daylight hours. But, it was a somber night and they had returned.

    His name was Nathaniel Heath. He drove Highway 59 near the  Arizona and Mexican Border in his olive green Eldorado convertible...top down. The wind blew back his auburn hair and drowned out the whispers. That night he opened a crack, a sliver that would decide his fate forever.

      Nathaniel had no idea where he was headed, only that it was time to leave. Tucson held no answers to the questions he sought. He was 26 years old and found it difficult to commit to anything or any place for very long, until he knew what had happened to his father. 

     Nathaniel's father disappeared when he was only 10. His mother was a hopeless alcoholic and he had been dumped in a series of group homes and Foster Care. Nathaniel had learned to survive, but also, he had learned to trust no one.  At 18, as soon as he was old enough to flee El Paso, he left to search for clues about his father's disappearance. All that was left was an old Samsonite suitcase with photos and mementos from his father’s life. It sat in the backseat.

    For the last couple weeks, Nathaniel had been considering inking a different tattoo onto his left arm. If he picked the right one, maybe it might be able to counter the unearthly whispers from his crow tattoo. He couldn't look at it anymore. The messages were growing darker and they haunted him. 

        “Nightsville, Arizona, 10 miles”, read the sign. He seemed to remember Nightsville mentioned in one of the articles from his father's suitcase. Nathaniel pulled over to the side of the highway and yanked it up to the front seat. Rummaging through papers and photos, he found a newspaper clipping about Nightsville… It mentioned that it was an ancient border town cut off from the modern world until recently. 

     Oddly, the article was dated a few weeks before his father’s disappearance. Two words were circled…. “Spirit Ink”. Nathaniel thought, maybe it could have been a print shop, or maybe, a tattoo parlor. He decided to drive the 10 miles to Nightsville to investigate. The wind was blocking out the dark whispers in his head. If his father had been there, Nathaniel wanted to know this place, and maybe get a new tattoo.

    He took the exit, cruised past the many dark storefronts and slowly turned onto a dark street at the end of the drive. Straight ahead, he saw a neon sign. It read… Spirit Ink.  The sign cast a warm glow over the blacktop and asphalt beyond his headlights. Sliding his foot onto the brake pedal, Nathaniel glided to a slow stop. He rested his hands in his lap and turned to look out the passenger window. The comforting full moon in the distance spun a silver veil over the cacti and the mesas of the Sonoran Desert nearby. It was beautiful and inviting. He floated in cool silence once again, a new beginning.

Track 2.                                                  BEING OF LIGHT

    Nathaniel  Heath lives in an upstairs apartment above a tattoo parlor in a small town on the dusty border of Arizona and Mexico. He is gruff, physically fit  drifter who has been trying to settle down with a his new girlfriend, a waitress he met at a border roadhouse saloon. She is 51/2pregnant with their child.
    One evening , they went  to bed . Nathaniel Heath was awakened by an overwhelming feeling of love and acceptance. Hovering over his bed was an apparition of the most beautiful loving woman he had ever witnessed. She told him he had been chosen to retrieve a precious package from a dangerous place. She left a special metal suitcase at the foot of the bed. She told him to drive toward the border and to look for signs as to what he should do next.

Track  3                                              THE RIDE/ THE CHASE 

      Nathaniel Heath leaves his puzzled and pregnant girlfriend behind as he lays the metal suitcase on the front car seat and races away in his muscle car. He drives towards the Mexican border. His intuition tells him to pull into an alley.  A black El Dorado with tinted windows whips  into the alley and  blocks his exit. Three Menacing figures  in dark suits (Shadow People  -beings of darkness who attempt to suck the light from all in their path.) jump from the El Dorado and approach him. Nathaniel Heath grabs the metal suitcase and darts into a labyrinth of alleyways. a chase ensures, a shot is fired and Nathaniel Heath survives. He runs from the last alley and emerges at the edge of the Sonoran Desert on the border of Arizona and Mexico . Sensitive to signs, he walks toward the sound of a church bell, trusting in it's significance.

    The Shadow People are beings of darkness that attempt to suck the light from all life forms in their presence. They have been watching Nathaniel Heath and intend to use the precious package for their use.
