A performance piece for pre-recorded texts and sounds, live performance and objects. Based on selected texts from Gertrude Stein's work Tender Buttons, in which she lists and elaborates on many different objects in cubistic literary fashion. Eight Objects explores the imagery, essence, associative nature, and connections sensed between objects and the words that express them, and the role of the performer (as object) in performance.

Eight Objects

A dirge is traditionally a song of mourning and lamentation, sung at a funeral. In the creation of this piece, I have reflected over grief with its combination of memories, love, tears, sorrow, joy and loss, and the act of collective mourning. It is a representation of the many loved ones in a funeral procession joining in their sorrow to express the sounds of the heart remembering, of saying farewell, and the wishing of the peaceful journey of the soul to the beyond.

Dirge: Farewell and Beyond

Made by the body. Heard by the body. Felt by the body. Fluctuations interacts with a room’s natural acoustics together with elongated overlapping vocal tones navigated through a small network of effects. As sounds grow and fill the space, so too the fluctuations (beatings). Deliberate slight bends in tones cause room to sway. Sounds infiltrate the body. The inner ear vibrates. Differential tones appear. The simple turn of a head changes the perception of audible overtones. Sound becomes tangible, reaching deep, filling the body’s cavities with the caressing tremor of oscillation. Embracing temporality in time and space Fluctuations envelopes one in a slowly evolving soundscape encouraging all to just listen, be, feel and reflect.
