It’s been nearly 15 years since we started making music together as Casino Times. Two albums, 10 EPs and a load more singles and remixes later, and we’re now both Dads trying to navigate a very different world to the one we knew when we started messing around with synths in Joe’s bedroom. 

Between all the moments in time, different people and places, we’ve built up a huge library of unreleased music. We’ve been slowly sharing some of this via WMD?, but the older (and clearly more reflective) we’ve become, we’ve started to realise that no one benefits from us sitting on this mountain of music. 

We watch a huge archive of music collect digital dust.

That’s we’re kicking off our new HD series on WMD? We’ll be putting out a single a week for the next few months exclusively on our Bandcamp and then a couple of bundles on stores as we progress. 

What does HD stand for? It could be High Definition, Hard Drive or anything you want it to be. The music we’re showcasing via the HD series, doesn’t have a style. Some of it is fully formed club tracks and some ambient sketches, some emotive and some just a bit weird. All of the tracks though hopefully  transports you to a memory or point in your own story.

What does Human Data mean? It’s the connection we have to the digital world, parts us we leave behind imprinted in 1s and 0s. The music we’re showcasing via the HD series, doesn’t have a style. Some of it is fully formed club tracks and some ambient sketches, some emotive and some just a bit weird. All of the tracks though hopefully transports you to a memory or point in your own story.

One of the most challenging things we’ve found with releasing music is curation. 

We’re always making such varied sounds, that sometimes trying to build a narrative can be tricky. We tend to find on an EP, we’re pulling in lots of different directions, bringing together new ideas and old sketches. These could be stylistic similar or just capture a similar vibe. The end result is a bit of a melting pot of genres.

Circular perfectly encapsulates this. It’s house, breaks and a touch of new wave analog funk, all moulded together. We couldn’t think of a better track to kick off the series.

What’s in a sample?

After our first album, where we casually sampled records we liked, we were happy with the results, but felt we needed to push ourselves to create clearer boundaries between our own music and the material we referenced from others.

We a drew line in the sand and split out, Casino Edits and Casino Times. Edits for samples, CT for original music.

The music we released on the Edits, we dug deep to find killer loops and build our vibe on top. Whereas original CT music became more explorative, bringing concepts and themes, something we felt our musics really lacked before the album.

But, let’s be honest… It’s all bullshit.

Even though we felt like we needed to prove ourselves musically, some of the best songs we made before this mixed elements of our own music and how we interpreted other people’s.

Sampling has always sat in a grey area, and while there’s undeniably some questionable use of original material, putting boundaries up is only going to act as a creativity killer.

Anyway, this was ten years ago. We’ve had a more carefree approach recently, and with that are happy to present to you Autres, a collision of us and our influences.

A well-known break, a sample from an old French record, a sub bass and some chords.

Let’s talk soundscapes.

A lot of club music ends up shaped by familiar expectations. Uniformed mixes, tidy structures, everything placed exactly where convention would put it.

And sure, that approach works… but it can also get a bit boring.

With Deep In Reflections, we wanted to move away from that and build something more immersive. Something that feels more like a place you step into. Dense synths and layered atmospheres blur together into a kind of drifting, enveloping haze.

At the centre is a single vocal sample pulled from an old TV ad. It cuts through the track like a small, forgotten memory, the one kind of recognisable sound in a world bathed in synths.

Most of the textures, the percussive elements, even the sense of rhythm, comes from atmospheres reshaped and repurposed until they become their own kind of instrumentation.

The result is something meant to surround you as you listen… It’s more about immersion than dance floor energy, a little headphone moment to get lost in.

Deep In Reflections

When we’re putting together an EP, we’re often pulled in many different directions. 

It’s not unusual to end up with a shortlist of ten or more tracks that we then have to whittle down to just four.

That process can take months, and in the case of our albums, sometimes even years.
The tracks that don’t make the cut might resurface on another release, but more often they’re set aside and filed away in the hard drive.

Grounded has gone through this cycle several times. It’s a highly emotive, atmospheric track, but it hasn’t always translated to what we’re aiming for on a more conventional club EP, or it can be difficult to align with the overall curation and vibe we’re going for.

That said, it’s fully road-tested and ready to rumble. We clearly remember playing it at 4AM years ago, and that bridge really hitting.

It’s a shame it’s been sidelined for so long, but we’re happy the HD series is finally bringing it back to life.

We’re going to have a little break posting HD tracks over Christmas, but will be back in the year with some more cuts from the archives.

Circular and Autres are now available from all your favourite stores and Deep In Reflection and Grounded will also be at the start of next year. You can of course grab them all from Bandcamp.
