2 DISC EDITION OF THE CLASSIC DARKTHRONE ALBUM – NOW ON PEACEVILLE WITH BONUS TRACK PLUS COMMENTARY BY FENRIZ AND NOCTURNO CULTO 

New 2-disc edition of ‘Total Death’ includes a commentary disc recorded late 2010, where both Fenriz and Nocturno individually discuss the recording period and memories, as their songs are heard back for the first time in many years.

‘Total Death’ was the sixth album from Norwegian black metal legends Darkthrone, and was originally released in 1996. After recording the previous 2 albums at Fenriz’s Necrohell portable home studio, the band reverted back to a traditional studio set-up for recording; this time it was Ancient Spectre Ruins, with the songs recorded in 2 sessions there in August and October 1995.

 The song-writing on ‘Total Death’ was split equally between the 2 members, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto, with Nocturno supplying lyrics to his own songs, whilst Fenriz gave the honour to notable members of the Norwegian metal scene: Garm from Ulver, Ihsahn from Emperor, Carl-Michael Eide from Aura Noir/Ved Buens Ende and Satyr from Satyricon. The album delivers a classic dose of mid and up-tempo black metal, along with thrash, such as on the track ‘Blasphemer’. 

 Also included on this edition of ‘Total Death’ is the rare track ‘God of Disturbance and Friction’, which itself was recorded around the same period and subsequently included on a low-key compilation for the band’s label at the time, Moonfog Productions.

One of the early breed of US death metal acts, Autopsy formed in 1987 in San Francisco, & released 4 albums on Peaceville Records - beginning with the classic debut ‘Severed Survival’ in 1989 - before disbanding in 1995, with members going on to form Abscess. Autopsy triumphantly and officially returned from the grave after a 15 year hiatus with the 2010 EP, ‘The Tomb Within’. ‘Tourniquets, Hacksaws & Graves’ is the bands seventh studio album. It was recorded at Fantasy Studios with producer Adam Munoz and sees a continuation of Autopsy’s pursuit of the ultimate in metallic horror and extremity, combining the masterful guitar duo of Eric Cutler and Danny Coralles with Joe Trevisano on bass duties. From all-out death metal savagery to crawling, doom-filled sludgery with Chris Reifert’s distinctive brand of vocal sickness, ‘Tourniquets, Hacksaws & Graves’ further pushes the limits of taste and brutality.

To fans of black metal, Dødheimsgard need no introduction, being as they are one of the great purveyors of the Norwegian Black Metal creative evolution. The band was formed in 1994 by Aldrahn (Thorns) and Vicotnik (Ved Buens Ende). The early incarnation was that of a raw and melodic black metal band, with their debut album also featuring Fenriz of Darkthrone on bass. 

The band quickly evolved, and by Dødheimsgard’s third album, ‘666 International’, Vicotnik had taken over a lot of the writing duties, with DHG’s style becoming more technical yet ferocious black metal, with strong experimental ideas and industrial elements. Vicotnik’s riffs were inspired by cult bands such as Thorns, and perfectly entwined with Aldrahn’s delightfully twisted lyrics and immense vocals to create something truly unique. In its ‘666 International’ incarnation, DHG – as they were later to be known – featured a line-up of well-respected Norwegian musicians including Czral (Aura Noir, Ved Buens Ends, Virus), Apollyon (Aura Noir, Immortal), plus Mr Magic Logic (Fleurety) on keyboards, as the album was constructed over a period of time. All in all ‘666 International’ is rightly regarded as a highly influential masterpiece of avant-garde metal by many since its release in 1999.

Originally formed in 1989 by mastermind Snorre Ruch, Marius Vold, & Bård Faust (Emperor), Norwegian band Thorns has inspired a great number of acts such as Satyricon, Mayhem, Dissection, & Emperor, mainly due to Snorre’s highly influential style of playing & creating riffs on the early Thorns demo tapes. So impressed was Euronymous of Mayhem, that Snorre became second guitarist in the band for a while & his riffs were used in classic Mayhem tracks. 

‘Thorns’ was the band’s debut (& only, thus far) full-length studio album. It was released in 2001 & is a cult slice of highly-individual Norwegian black metal, including experimental & sometimes industrial influences along with synth passages to create a chilling yet clinical slice of extremity. The album was notable for featuring Satyr of Satyricon on vocals, a duty shared between songs with the vocal talent of Aldrahn (ex-Dødheimsgard) & the recording line-up also featured Hellhammer of Mayhem on drums. The outcome was a unique & original album which is today considered a cult classic release by critics. 

This edition of ‘Thorns’ contains 2 bonus tracks from the band’s 2000 demo; namely the album track ‘Existence’ but also a previously unreleased song called ‘TSoS’. This edition of ‘Thorns’ is completed by the inclusion of the rare video clip for the track ‘Vortex’, made by Halvor Bodin.

Norwegian band Gehenna was formed in early 1993, with the recording of their cult ‘Black Seared Heart’ demo taking place later that same year, followed shortly by the release of the debut 7” ‘Ancestors of the Darkly Sky’. Gehenna became known for their melodic and grim black metal, with symphonic elements adding greatly to the atmosphere of the music, particularly on early releases. The band’s style progressed over the years, taking on more death and thrash metal elements at times before returning to black metal. 

‘WW’ was Gehenna’s sixth album, was originally released in 2005 and was notable for the appearance of Frost from Satyricon on drums. The album saw a stripped-down approach to writing compared to some of their previous works, with these primitive black metal tracks exuding a dark, cold, yet brutal atmosphere, written by co-founding member Sanrabb, with the lyrics based around themes of war. 

‘WW’ was recorded at Steel Production Studios and Realnoise Studios during 2003 and 2004. 

This edition of ‘WW’ features 3 extra tracks in the shape of 2 previously unheard alternate mixes/versions, plus a live recording from Inferno Festival 2005. The booklet also features additional photos and liner notes written by the band.

Each demo has now also been fully restored and re-mastered from the best tape sources available, specifically for this release. Also included on ‘Sempiternal Past: The Darkthrone Demos’ are the tracks recorded at Oslo TV in 1989, along with a restored version of the rare song 'God of Disturbance & Friction'.   The booklet for 'Sempiternal Past' features rare photos of the band in their early years, as well as liner notes & lyrics.

Norwegian legends Darkthrone have completed work on their latest album 'The Underground Resistance', which is set for release on Peaceville Records on February 25th.

‘The Underground Resistance’ is Darkthrone’s latest venture through the metal cosmos, & first new album since the 2010 opus ‘Circle the Wagons’. A continuation of the free-spirited metallic lands the duo of Fenriz & Nocturno Culto have been roaming for a long time, ‘The Underground Resistance’ contains Darkthrone’s trademark masterful riffing in a broad range of styles, effortlessly bounding through the annals of classic metal, taking in thrash, speed & black metal, & not forgetting a dose of Punk. All in all a ferocious & dynamic set of tracks drenched in Fenriz’s & Nocturno’s rich & diverse tastes in all things metal, primarily those rooted firmly in the spirit of the 80’s. 6 tracks long, & every one an epic in itself, this is undoubtedly Darkthrone’s strongest outing of late.

‘The Underground Resistance’ was written & recorded spring 2010 to summer 2012 at Necrohell 2 studios by the band themselves. The album was mastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door, Texas USA. Cover artwork also comes courtesy of the iconic & celebrated artist Jim Fitzpatrick.

One of the pioneering industrial black metal forces to emerge in the early 90's, Mysticum brought to the world a completely unique brand of extreme & psychedelic discordant black metal with insane drum machine patterns & synths. They were originally signed to Euronymous' Deathlike Silence Productions label, such was his belief in the band (Mysticum even featured Hellhammer from Mayhem in their line-up for a brief period). However, this venture proved to be cut short following his death, forcing Mysticum to look elsewhere for the release of their eventual debut album, 'In the Streams of Inferno', finally surfacing in 1996. 

A perfect concoction of cold, primitive black metal & forward-thinking ideas from an act unafraid to push boundaries, the hell of 'In the Streams of Inferno' has had a lasting & profound impact on many since 1996. For this release, the album has now had some extensive remastering work courtesy of Tom Kvålsvoll at Strype Studios in Oslo to give a better representation of the sound the band initially intended, & includes 2 bonus songs. The packaging also contains new artwork made in close association with the band to fully reflect their intended vision, plus liner notes & additional lyrics. 

The CD/DVD edition of ‘In the Streams of Inferno’ also includes a bonus DVD containing two live shows from 1996. ‘Grotten’, in Asker, Norway has until now been totally unknown to the masses except for the few that were present at the show. The other show is the more well-known Bradford, UK set from Mysticum’s European tour with Marduk & Gehenna. Overall both gigs give a great glimpse into the pure atmosphere & intensity of this cult act, & a must for all fans.

The album was recorded and mixed April 2013 at Fantasy Studios in California with Adam Munoz, and features cover artwork by renowned artist Joe Petagno (Motörhead, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin).
