After an LP by Red Axes and an EP by Bot’Ox earlier this year, I’m A Cliché is back in the saddle with a new look and a new feel while keeping the same great sound. Two EPs including this one are going to be released on both digital and vinyl formats this Fall, leading up to very special 10th anniversary celebrations in Paris towards the end of the year.

DARK HORSE
A robust drum groove, a syncopated bass line, a galloping cowbell and treated drum fills mingle with hypnotic arpeggios and dramatic pads to create an ominous feeling. Opening the EP with melody and style, MOSCOMAN reminds us here of his dark horse quality: he might be a mysterious outsider but boy does he have the skills to get dancefloors moving.

REROTICA
A mesmerising bass sequence with a no-frills beat. Somewhere in between disco and EBM, it’s already a sensual affair with the music alone but MOSCOMAN’s libidinous vocals give an unmistakably erotic feel to the track. Clocking at 106 BPM, this slow burner is the perfect tune to initiate body to body dancing and to make sweat drip from the walls.

EGO TRIPPIN
A slapped bass and a funky drum beat are at the core of this track. Adding layer upon layer of eerie synths, creepy vocals, subtle drums lo-fi effects, this track is both groovy and psychedelic. There’s a hint of electro-funk nostalgia and a dash of gothic post-punk which gives EGO TRIPPIN that je-ne-sais-quoi required to take dancefloors to the next level.

EGO TRIPPIN’ (THE TWINS REMIX)
Upon hearing this EP, mysterious producer THE TWINS specifically asked to remix EGO TRIPPIN. They deliver an outstanding remix tailored for club use with an elegant, full-bodied groove where the track’s nostalgic feel is underlined by lush vocals and hypnotic synth lines. When the track dramatically breaks down and that slapped bassline makes an appearance, things get stunningly evocative and the buildup leading back to the beat has rarely been so ecstatic.

With no real plan other than to make an album as unpretentious and natural as possible, Donna simply reflects the sounds that have enthused and inspired Cassy over the years, but it did’t come easy. “I had broken up with my husband, left Berlin, left my friends and left a way of making music and a way of living life,” she recalls. “It was too painful to make music. I tried singing and it felt awful. I had to look at myself and understand how much I truly disliked myself.
I had to get out of all my unhealthy relationships with people that were a mere reflection of how I felt inside. Music producing was out of the question. It reminded me of who I tried to be for other people.”
Once the album writing process eventually started in earnest after six years of stop start, Cassy found out she was pregnant. Six months of structural experiments ensued with sound engineer and friend Iad Agabekov, as did a relocation to LA and then Philadelphia. It was here the album was finished as Cassy found new inspiration and passion with her new born son and partner. They, along with friend and “soul brother” King Britt, ”helped me transform the album into a more mature version of me and my music. Into the version I am ready for the world to hear.”
Opening with the downbeat vocal darkness of ‘This Is How We Know’ this album has you immediately enthralled. From there, a deep and moody selection of stripped back but emotive cuts range from crisp and kicking to more menacing and troubled. Plenty of vocals lend the whole thing a personal and intimate feel, with the overall mood lovelorn, vulnerable and honest. There is minimal techno, soul infused house and Latin flecked rollers next to creepy slow burners and delightfully freewheeling and melodic disco style cuts.
All in all, Donna makes for a roller coaster ride that is accomplished and unpredictable, and very much proves Cassy has much more than just effective club music up her sleeve.

Barcelona-based multifaceted artist Raven joins Radio Slave’s Rekids with an incredibly imaginative five-track debut release.

Born in Canada, Raven is a talented nomad who’s been cutting her teeth as a DJ, producer, singer and songwriter whilst living in Los Angeles, Chicago, Berlin, Toronto, and Mexico City. As a performer, she joins the dots between Techno, Acid, Electro and early Rave: a genre-spanning approach she applies to her productions too, making her a difficult artist to pigeonhole. Discovered by Matt Edwards, Raven now joins Rekids - a label responsible for introducing some of electronic music’s most incendiary names to the scene, including the likes of Nina Kraviz and Peggy Gou.

Opening gently with ethereal atmospherics, ‘Flames’ springs into action with galloping percussion, echoing effects, metallic nuances and Raven’s poignant singing. Following on, ‘Saint’ bangs from the word go courtesy of its convoluted rhythm, piercing claps and soaring background synths whilst rave sounds and murky lyrics operate throughout.

Thudding kicks and crystalline pads then pair up beautifully with her serene voice in the lively ‘In2U’, leading into the more downtempo ‘BBGRL’ that employs purring sub-bass, emotional melodies and acid squelches. Tying everything together, ‘Insomnia’ inaugurates with sweet chords and re-pitched vocals before robust drums drive it onwards into the distance.

TEMPLE is a solo project from Adelaide based artist Ben Smith. Ben has spent the last decade running a record label, playing in bands, touring Australia and playing at festivals including Rainbow Serpent, WOMADelaide, Wide Open Space and Strawberry Fields Festival to name a few. Throughout this time Ben has been working on solo material, while writing and producing records for other people. It’s now finally time to share his musings with the world.

“This release has been 10 years in the making. There’s not a single track on it that has been made in the last 5 years. However, with my crippling anxiety of not finishing songs and sharing them with the world, it is only now in overcoming that anxiety that these tracks are finally seeing the light of day. I’ve struggled for years with judgment, creating the “perfect” (perfection is an illusion) song and being concerned with what other people will think about my art. 2020 was a year that I drew a line in the sand and said enough is enough - I need to share myself with the world, the good and the bad, and this hard drive full of music. Watching Cassy eagerly dive into her record collection is a joy. Away from the transcendent spaces she continues to play at most weekends, her vinyl-digging series Talking About My Records on Instagram gives ample opportunity to engage with her endearing excitability. Its concept being spurred by moving back home to Austria and reconnecting with a stacked vinyl stash, you can feel the buzz gained from rediscovering lost gems and rinsed B-sides. Keen to share this experience with whoever’s watching, what makes this series stand out is the sense that Cassy’s enthusiasm and faithfulness to the music that fuels club culture has been revived. We’re seeing the beginning of a new era for Cassy.
