In December, 2013, David Block was invited to participate in Matt Geraghty's "21" project. Matt's vision was to bring in musicians from all different styles/countries/ethnicities and create 21 days of improvisational music. Over the 21 days, 43 new bands were created. Every session was completely unique and fully improvised. David was invited to take part of Session 16 and had the idea of doing an "improv" production session. Session 16 consisted of Danny Musengo (singer/songwriter ), Adriano Santos (percussion), Victor Provost (steel pan) & Matt Geraghty (stand-up bass). They immediately clicked and started making incredible music. David sat back and listened for an hour while the artists got to know each other. At the end of the session, David picked his favorite song they had created and one by one, recorded all the parts, free-styled in one take by each of the musicians. Starting with guitar, Danny Musengo sings the song "Here for a Moment" completely freestyle.  All the supplemental parts were recorded in one take each. A total of 17 individual layers of instruments by 4 musicians. Only one mic was used and all tracks were recorded in two hours in Matt's apartment. Stand up bass was recorded in the bathroom :) It was a true freestyle recording session with no preconceived ideas/direction. 75 hours in the lab and the song "Here for a Moment" was born.

The Human Experience - Here for a Moment ft Danny Musengo [EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE]

"Medicine” is a song-anthem honoring the traditions of folk medicine; plant-based medicine as a tool for empowerment and healing. It is a call to action to support the voices of the herbalists, healers, and teachers… the roots, plants, trees, and stones… the arts, the spirits, and the wild ones. It is an honoring of all the many ways that we can be well, and the radical and traditional ways in which we can steward health within ourselves. 

This song is a direct tribute to the people around the world who are holding and teaching these ways of herbal plant-based medicine, educating us all to know our gardens, our forests, our plants and our own bodies... to bring wellness back into our own hands and communities. It is not a dismissal of modern medicine, but a gratitude and honoring of its ancestry and foundations within folkloric traditions. 

This release comes on the New Moon after the Fall Equinox. As we are moving into a new season, a new time, and a new chapter, we offer this song as a ritual anthem for this transition and time of great change.

"Wider Circles" is the newest album from Rising Appalachia. With influences of folk, soul, roots, world music, and poetry, the album showcases the alchemy of sibling harmonies paired with banjo and fiddle duets. The album was inspired by folk standards and traditional hymns, old mountain odes, and activist anthems that pull equally from the swampy sounds of the bayou, the twang of the Appalachian mountains, and the beat of a global rhythm.

In the third installment of a monthly series, going by the name CASTANEA, Rising Appalachia’s David Brown releases a remix of the band’s song “Synchronicity.” Maintaining the downtempo, head nod vibe of “Novels” and “Zavey,” Brown reached a bit further back into his own roots for this one. Here's what he had to say about the track:
 
“Towards the end of my teens and early twenties, I was in a very urban phase of life – skateboarding, scratching records, taking trips from the mountains where I grew up into the urban landscapes of NYC, ATL, and Baltimore. Nearly everything about the hip-hop and street skate culture I sought out, and was subsequently shaped by. I feel lucky, looking back now, to have been around for that era, before copyright almost crushed hip-hop and before skating became so sanitized.” 
 
“My setup was pretty classic... I had this hooked-on-phonics style headset for my monitors and microphone that I ‘borrowed’ from my high school and I recorded mixtapes with two turntables onto my first computer’s sandwich sized hard-drive. Recently I pulled all my samples off of it, and was able to incorporate some of them into the remix of Synchronicity.”
 
“I was introduced to the concept of synchronicity around that time, too. It’s a long story but by lucky accident I found a booked called “Synchronicity: Science, Myth and Trickster” and it was one of the best windfalls of my life, a missing puzzle piece that really helped guide me. I came to see those things – the chance encounters, the dreams getting reflected in waking life, the amazing coincidences – as signals from a deep, wild and mysterious force in our world. As the classic sample which I scratch says, I love it.”
 
“Musically, I wanted to see what it would sound like to shift the rhythm of the song, and then apply the textures of the 90s hip-hop era to it – the kalimba, the upright bass, the scratching. I’m thinking that next month I’ll work on another Rising Appalachia track from the Wider Circles LP, and then start spinning the RA vinyl that’s about to drop, “ALIVE!”

Wonderland is our annual charity benefit festival ||| 3 Day Immersive Camping Music & Arts Festival. In addition to a food/toy drive, a percentage of ticket sales will be donated to a selected charity.
