A live recording overlooking downtown Portland, Oregon, on June 17th, 2023. 

This mix starts with the listener in a natural world sprinkled with wonder as Portland's East Forest introduces the scene constructed by Earth Boys "Piff Party" and transpires to the sense of a digital world tinted with confusion as Spacetime Continuum introduces Portland's former Chromatic's front-singer Ruth Radelet to fill the air before the sets conclusion. It was the end of sunset, the beginning of twilight and Drew was the last to perform after 3 local artists (Eights Everywhere, Primo Amoré and Limanjaya) for Casual Decay's birthday as he plugged in to begin the second recorded and released mix since the pursuit of mixing vinyl less than one year ago. If he was having a hard time calling himself a DJ before, maybe he won't as much now? We'll see what comes of all this -- as each interaction with music has served as an affirmation to keep moving forward in life. So sit back or stand up and enjoy the show, imperfections and all.

It’s been a while since I’ve put up a live DJ set. It’s also been a while since I’ve played a mostly electro set. Thought I’d take this opportunity at The Great Beyond this year to record a sunrise set driven by some of my favorite melodic electro tunes ever. Many which I’ve been playing for 20+ years.

@casual_decay is the primary alias for Portland-based Jon Nasrallah. Although originally from Nashville, Jon has laid deep roots in the PNW.

As a facilitator with Portland's nonprofit Synth Library, Jon provides access to an array of hardware synthesizers and shares his skills as an educator with the community by leading workshops on modular synthesis.

Through the alias Casual Decay, Jon explores organically evolving sonic textures inspired by ecological and cellular processes, just as comfortable improvising beneath tress in public parks as they are carefully scoring for film. Although mainly focused on Casual Decay, Jon can also be found conjuring gritty and abrasive new wave and electro inspired music as Thinking Spell, and when DJing rather than live performing, it's DJ Tropical Goth (as you'll hear in this mix).

Each of these identities represents a different facet of an adept musician, whose expressions knows few limits. It's a pleasure to share Jon's work, and catch up with them here.

103. Casual Decay's Tropical Goth Mix Vol. 2

The original sample is from the tube orchestra, performed live during Cave Music Vol 2, Track 9 on 3/12/17. The sample is played at variable (and reverse) speeds through Samplr's tape mode. The samplr output is run through borderlands granular. 

Performed in one take with no additional post-processing.
