Ken Schaphorst and the NEC Jazz Orchestra drew on NEC's exclusive archive of Vaughn Monroe charts, alongside hits by Billy Eckstine to create this concert event celebrating these two popular singing stars of the 1940s. Recorded live October 17, 2013 in Jordan Hall.

The keys and vocals were recorded at separate times and places so it hangs together quite well in the rubato sections bearing this in mind. Yeah Ms. King has a brilliant voice and you can hear the jazz greats in her voice and style - you only get that if you've listened loads and can then bring that to your singing, a rare thing. Founded on the principles of equality, freedom of speech, and reckless exploration, Great on Paper is an improvised, four-person party that goes into musical situations without an exit strategy. Featuring a typical jazz quartet configuration with a distinctly atypical bent towards the avant-garde and the folkloric, GOP taps into the jazz tradition without getting too ideological or self-conscious about it.

GOP performs mostly original music that is somehow both formally sophisticated yet, in moderate doses, pleasant to listen to. With numerous musical influences that range from Steve Coleman to Paul Bley to Stevie Wonder, GOP has no interest in disguising its catholic tastes, and the band’s co-mingling of diverse musical sensibilities allegedly lend it an air of refinement and worldliness. As one anonymous reviewer has said, “At their show in December, that new band GOP really put the ‘Status’ in ‘Status Quo!’” Call them what you will—a postmodernist mélange, abstract sound-fashioners, jazz charlatans—GOP takes no prisoners and doesn’t apologize when it steps on your feet; it just keeps on moving right along.

Digging through old tapes, I found a recording of a 1991 piano concert in Roosevelt, NJ. The program contained a mix of originals and classical, with this outlier -- an improvisational medley of two Gershwin tunes from "Porgy and Bess." My treatment of Summertime is dreamy and crosses several keys. Ain't Necessarily So is fast and jazzy. Enjoy, and thanks for listening!
