Steve Stoll

Owner of techno labels Proper NYC and 212 productions, Steve began his musical life as a drummer at the age of 10 and in the late 80's was playing drums and programming with the Chicago Wax Trax! band Sister Machine Gun. After a stint with them he realized that pure electronic music had far more potential to me than the confines of being a back-up musician and he began composing minimalistic but hard electronic tracks on a small cassette 4 track recorder with a simple analog set-up on the floor of his apartment on 18th Street. Steve's first solo record 'Datacloud' was released on Richie Hawtin's Probe label in 1993 and things just snowballed from there. 

'I recorded for many other labels including Novamute, Profile, Fax, Djax, Musicman and Synewave to name a few but my proudest moment was when I started my own label Proper NYC and became my own boss. Early on I had always wanted to be different, not be just another DJ, so instead of spinning vinyl I performed live PA's bringing my studio on tour and improvising new sets every night. I truly felt like things could blow up every time i took the stage (and they did sometimes!) but looking back this added very much excitement to the performances (at least for me :-)'

Steve had the pleasure of playing for crowds all over the world from Europe to Asia at some of the biggest clubs and festivals including I Love Techno, Fuse, Omen, Cocoon, Tresor, Mayday, Love Parade, 10 Days of Techno, Mt. Fuji to name a few. Several years ago he got the chance to create a project together with my hero Patrick Codenys from Front 242 under the guise 'Gaiden'. He has also worked on projects together with Ken Ishii, Damon Wild, Pete Namlook and remixed the likes of Gary Numan, DJ Rush, Hardfloor, to name a few. 

'These days I still produce albeit a slower output than the glory days of techno. I also produce sample libraries for Big Fish Audio (my 'Locked Groove' project was selected as a top 10 by Future Music Magazine). I am interested in anything that expands the theory and execution of electronic music and media. I love circuit bending as much as I love analog synthesis.'

Bio.:
Producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno in the vein of early Plastikman and Joey Beltram (even though his career began as a drummer with the industrial label Wax Trax), Steve Stoll has recorded for Nova Mute, Probe, DJax, Delirium, Synewave and his own Proper NYC label. Raised in Brooklyn, Stoll listened to hip-hop and disco as a child, then joined the Army straight out of high-school. He served for five years, including a period in the Gulf War when he plotted bomb runs by satellite. After being released, Stoll shifted around: he played drums for the industrial group Sister Machine Gun, studied jazz and began recording straight-edged techno for Big Apple labels like 212 Productions and Damon Wild's Synewave.

Stoll debuted for Sm:)e Recordings with the 1995 album Pacemaker. The following year brought another album, Zero Divide (recorded as the Operator) and an EP for Nova Mute (as the Blunted Boy Wonder). After he reverted back to Steve Stoll, Damn Analog Technology followed in 1997 and The Blunted Boy Wonder one year later. He stopped because of parenthood but now picked up the gear again.

Steve Stoll nació en Staten Island (Nueva York) en Julio de 1967. Su temprano interés por la música le llevó a comenzar a estudiar batería a los 10 años y más tarde hacia el jazz, llegando a formar parte de varias bandas locales.
En seguida le perdió el miedo a las cajas de ritmos y a los samplers, algo que más tarde le serviría para convertirse en batería y programador del sello Wax Trax! de Chicago. Pero pronto se pasaría a hacer sus propios temas, en los que la percusión era el hilo conductor.

Our next Techno Minded Hero is a true legend. He has been around since the early 90s and has been an inspiration for many others with an well deserved reputation as a "producer's producer".

This DJ/Producer from New York started producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno in the vein of early Plastikman and Joey Beltram around the mid 90s. Releasing on labels such as Synewave, Novamute, Probe, Fine Audio Recordings and his very own label Proper NYC. 

And his sample libraries have been featured in many leading publication. Specifically, his Locked Groove series "Proper´s Grooves" was picked by Future Music magazine as one of their all time top 5 sample collections. . In short, his sound is second to none and has been sought out by the best in the industry, time and time again.
