Heith’s devout interest in the notion of reality started long before he recorded his latest album. The Italian musician, producer and artist probed the spiritual aspects of sound and its cosmogonic potential already in his previous works released on his own Haunter Records label.
Exploring the textures of consciousness through research into the ritual animism, he kept an omnivorous and universalist approach to cultural and sonic influence. This is central to X, wheel, Heith’s debut album and first release on PAN. It’s a deep dive into his creative and spiritual practice, one where art and life are inextricable.

Written and recorded across different studios in Milan, Rome and Florence between March, 2019, and January, 2020, eleven tracks cycle through a world of stylistic references—from psychedelia, psytrance and freak folk to stoner metal, noise and early electronic music—while remaining firmly a part of a singular vision.

Album opener “Letter 4” staggers along collaborator Leonardo Rubboli’s winding guitar melody, while second track “Dero” cycles into layers of assorted sine wave lines and tonal systems outside of the Western diatonic scales. X, wheel sits calmly at the centre of its own vortex of dissonance and diversity, moving through a spectrum of ideas, moods, and emotional states with uncanny ease. A glimpse of contributor Jesse Osborne- Lanthier’s synth melody briefly surfaces from a cacophonous flood of reverb and distortion on “Stoned Witch”. Aase Nielsen’s lonely saxophone wanders around the nostalgic hypnagogic noir of “Ensemble For Somnambulists”.

Heith draws together an array of philosophies and fictions together into a sonic tableau that exists outside of linear time. As the titular wheel spins, it does not bring about repetition, rather constant change and movement, spiralling into infinity.

The hypnotic nature of the release is translated in the album’s liner notes. It’s a collage of sorts, constructed from Heith’s own diary entries using the non-phonetic alphabet and linguistic experiment called “Angel’s Hair” developed with artist Pietro Agostoni. Together with contributions from ZU drummer Jacopo Battaglia and didgeridoo player Fabio Goldaniga, X, wheel is an exercise in creating new forms of meaning through sound, turning spectral vibration into conscious awareness.

Blues Alif Lam Mim In the Mode Of Rag Infinity/Rag Cosmosis is a new composition from Catherine Christer Hennix's expanded just-intonation ensemble, the Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. The expanded ensemble includes vocalists Imam Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer, Amir Elsaffan and Amirtha Kidambi, an expanded brass section with the addition of Paul Schwingesnschlögl and Elena Kakaliagou, and the additon of Marcus Pal and Stefan Tiedje on electronics. This new piece was recorded live at the Issue Project Room and was mastered by Dubplates + Mastering in Berlin. 
Live At Issue Project Room is packaged in a deluxe letterpressed sleeve and is being issued at the same time as Central Palace Music from 100 Model Subjects For Hegikan Roku, a recording of Hennix's ensemble from 1976, also on Important.

This is what nicely sums up the Touched label. After the surprise release of one of the biggest names in recent electronic music history, Autechre, it's equally humbling to be able to offer up talented, up and coming artists. It makes us realise that there are those out there just as impressive as the established masters. There's a place for everyone here and we welcome them with open arms.

"Twists And Turns" is simply stunning. After an initial EP release earlier this year on Detroit Underground with 'Lost And Founded' and a contribution to Touched Music's summer mix that reappears here, 'Ariadne's Labyrinth' delivers a complex and intricate work that screams effort and talent.

It opens boldly and doesn't screw around. Leads are in your face, breaks and rhythms delicately layered and nearly all of the tracks build up beautifully into crescendos that are deconstructed with equal majesty.

With an almost leftfield feeling at times, I'm often reminded of 'Spokes' (the everlasting joy from Warp Record's Plaid) and the live tour that went along with it - twisted delays and assertive melodies guiding you from one track to the next. Most tracks could easily intertwine and the whole experience is both dance-worthy and contemplative with a rolling middle portion reminiscent of the best bits of the 'Dial P' mix rolled into one. This is both excitingly new and nostalgic.

A skilled violinist and pianist, the training shines through with impeccably self-recorded & sampled violin scattered about the album. It bridges the electroacoustic gap while firmly staying loyal to electronica, neither raw or over-processed with a perfect level of usage.
 Similarly impressive is the use of scattered Amen-style breaks and confident kicks that underpin the whole thing.

Although full of variety it never feels like it's searching for a purpose or trying too hard to fit in. I can relax or I can boogie, the choice is mine as the choice is there. From ambience to Klezmer and Jazz influences through a bevy of melodic electronica the whole thing ends perfectly with a relaxed piece that gives you a chance to contemplate what just happened.

And albeit less secret and surprising as they used to be, it's lovely to be presented with a hidden track - my first listen was a pleasant revelation that my experience wasn't quite yet over.

The midnight hour crept unto thee with hasty caution, revealing 'A Little Night Music: Aural Apparitions from the Geographic North', our third putrid prowl into Halloween-inspired sounds to torment and tantalize throughout the season. For this bout of distinguished dementia, we culled 31 brand new tracks of haunted hysteria conjured by some of the most alluring ambientists and outer auteurs from around the world. 

Spanning over two hours across two cassettes, 'A Little Night Music…’ unfurls itself in a literary horror structure, appearing and disappearing through a stirring Prologue and Epilogue by London-based cellist Oliver Coates, with each side of the cassettes introducing its Chapter with a chilling dirge courtesy of the inscrutable Geographic North House Band.  

What fills the ensuing pages is a mirthful tale concocted by an assembly exploring a realm all at once mournful and fatalist at its core. Entries from Clarice Jensen, Malibu, and the collaboration of Like a Villain and Christina Vantzou bring about endless glacial landscapes accented by pitch-grey skies. Conversely, transmissions from Michael Valentine West, M. Sage, Gregg Kowalsky, and Austrian ambient stalwart Fennesz explore richly textured mines of foreboding glee. 

Suspicion is the word when considering Zelienople’s eerie horse-carriage clip-clop, Nick Malkin’s neon-lit noir-jazz, or Carmen Villain’s gripping dub excursion. Elsewhere Ki Oni, Takagi Masakatsu, and Mary Lattimore (joined here by Paul Sukeena) provide glimmers of warmth amidst a tortured chill. 

Notable is the resurrection of Lotus Plaza and his solemnly hopeful piano composition, while barren hallucinations courtesy of Alex Zhang Hungtai, Ilyas Ahmed, and Danny Paul Grody set the stage for a third act confrontation from Atlantans Fit of Body and Algiers, providing a one-two serving of sensual unrest and cautionary homily.  

With hope and resolve shimmering through the final moments of our journey, know that all proceeds from the digital and cassette editions go directly toward Feminist Women's Health Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit providing safe, accessible, and compassionate abortion and gynecological care to all those who need it without judgement.
