Song Without Words

As a performer and listener, I find a closer connection to music through movement whether it’s nodding my head or tapping to the beat or just moving my body with the melodic tune. Hiccup-pated Groove originates from elements of movement and improvisation and serves as the common ground for the listener to enjoy. As the groove progresses, the simplicity of the tune gradually turns complex with contrasting remarks and unexpected interruptions that can quickly surprise a listeners comfort zone. Despite the bumpy roads and smooth-sailing songs that come about, the groove will always be there to help the listener sit back, chillax and enjoy the musical ride.

I was inspired by the courage of the younger generation following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Their voice and action to regulate gun control has sparked a movement that I hope will make a positive and safer change for the future. Let us be realistic, no student or adult should fear walking into a classroom, movie theatre, concert or a restaurant. 
The first movement introduces a low drone in the bass clarinet, articulating 17 times in representation of the lives lost in the shooting. Above is a simple and somber texture that gradually intensifies in dynamic and range, in symbolization that despite a communities grief, they are done being a statistic and aim for change. The second movement is focused around two pitch centers of A and D in representation of the word AR-15. Loud outbursts and repetitive textures help build to a climax of 15 harsh statements of the A’s and D’s in unison. The final movement utilizes an auxiliary instrument of the player to create a dark and eerie tone starting from a low yet building ostinato passed between each player. As the ostinato continues its build throughout the texture, it suddenly stops into a climax of fortissimo notes, in representation of the two syllables that make up the word “enough.” The end of this movement continues to build higher in range and louder in dynamic for all instruments. I want to leave the listener in questioning if a resolution will happen just like this ongoing debate if gun violence will ever be resolved.

Woodwind Quartet

Shadowplay is short piece where each movement presents a different character, color and timbre with a unique combination of the guitar and bass flute. In relation to its title, the first movement is an actual game of imitation between both instruments, starting from playful simplicity and gradually moving to a more disjunct and complex realm of sound. The second movement reflects the actual tone of the word “until” which I found it to be a feeling of anticipation and suspense. As the guitar introduces one statement, followed by the bass flute’s response, both come together without a “satisfying” conclusion of their statements, but rather leave the ears questioning, “What comes next?”
