The former Featherweight, Super-Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion, approaching his 20th anniversary as a pro, wants to throw his name back into the mix in the thriving 140lbs division by keeping his 100% winning record in the UK intact and ruining Catterall's chance of World Title action in his next fight. 

The 9-2 Sampson is a southpaw, which may present a technical challenge. With that said, the Sheffield man has never scored a stoppage win, so Hatton can take plenty of chances.

Linares bounced back by beating Al Toyogon in a confidence-builder before stopping Carlos Morales in four rounds and then meeting Devin Haney in 2021 and dropping a 12-round unanimous decision in a shot at the WBC Lightweight Title to kick off his current three-fight losing skid.

He fought twice in Russia after losing to Haney as he was stopped in the 12th round by Zaur Abdullaev in a shot at the WBC Silver Lightweight Belt in February, 2022 and was beaten by Hamazaryan the last time out. After all of this action, fans will see Linares will enter the ring at 47-8 with 29 Ko’s.

“I’m very focused on Catterall, that’s the most important thing, I don’t need to be thinking about the future and next year, now I need to be focused on this fight on October 21,” he said. “Win this fight and then I can sit down and then all the opportunities can come naturally. 

I have a lot of experience, I know I feel good, when I feel bad, that’s why I know when I lose. It’s another big opportunity to make an amazing fight to win again and then fight a lot of big fights. I’m very honest with you, my team, my family, with my people, my target is to make a maximum two more fights and I want to retire with a good legacy.”

However, Catterall insists that he is not overlooking Linares and expresses admiration for his opponent’s achievements. In a pre-fight press conference, he said: “I think we all know Linares is a future Hall of Famer, and I wouldn’t show the disrespect to any opponent by talking about any other fights right now. I said to Sam [manager Sam Jones] and the team around me, we don’t talk about any fights – it’s 100% focus on Linares.

Linares has plenty of world-class experience and is also a former featherweight and super featherweight world champion who has recently been living in Japan. He won the vacant WBC Lightweight Belt in December, 2014 by stopping Javier Prieto in the fourth round in Tokyo.

Catterall: "It is an honour to share a ring with Jorge Linares. I’ve watched him come over to the UK on three occasions and win three times. He is a legend of the game and this is a must-win fight for the both of us for very different reasons.

"There is talk of a huge fight for me after this but it’ll count for nothing if I take my eye off the ball - which I can’t afford to do at this stage of my career. It’s no secret my career has lacked momentum, so after boxing in May and now October I genuinely believe you’ll see the best version of me on October 21."

I can be a champion again if I want, it depends on me, my mentality, my motivation, the people around me. Now I have the same feeling I had before when I was a champion. That’s why I’m back in the gym, why I’m back fighting again.

“That was my dream from three years,” he said. “I was talking to my team and family, ‘I’m so excited to go back and fight in England.’ So imagine how I feel.

Catterall (27-1, 13 KOs), rated at No. 6 by The Ring at junior welterweight,  learned on the job after he turned professional and scored several impressive wins over the likes of Tom Stalker (TKO 8), Joe Hughes (UD 12), and then won the British title against Tyrone Nurse (UD 12). However, despite staying unbeaten his career seemed to stall.

He was the WBO No. 1 ranked contender and finally got his big chance when he met then undisputed champion Josh Taylor. Catterall fought the fight of his life, dropping Taylor before holding off the defending champions’ late charge.

The 30-year-old southpaw ended a 15 month ring absence by widely outpointing Darragh Foley over 10-rounds on the undercard of Leigh Wood rematch with Mauricio Lara at Manchester Arena in May. 

Legendary Linares is well-known in the UK following his 10th-round thrilling stoppage win over Kevin Mitchell at The O2 in London back in May 2015 and for his following two points wins over former Lightweight World Champion Anthony Crolla at Manchester Arena in 2016 and 2017.

There are a lot of good fighters at 135 and 140. I cannot think too much about who’s next. The important thing is right now. I’m super happy, focused, excited to make an amazing fight with Catterall.”

Linares has been training in Miami since the early summer before moving is camp to Las Vegas six weeks ago to hook up with regular trainer Ismael Salas and his assistant Fernando Diaz, and he is primed to return to big-time boxing.
