"There is talk of a huge fight for me after this, but it'll count for nothing if I take my eye off the ball -- which I can't afford to do at this stage of my career. It's no secret my career has lacked momentum, so after boxing in May and now October, I genuinely believe you'll see the best version of me on Oct. 21."

That "huge fight" Catterall mentioned is the rematch with Taylor. There have been discussions for a Catterall-Taylor encore targeted for late 2023 or early 2024, sources told ESPN. Taylor is set to campaign at welterweight after he lost his title to Lopez, but Catterall is willing to meet him in between 140 and 147 pounds, sources said.

Former three-weight world champion Jorge Linares will look to hold off not just Jack Catterall but also Father Time when the pair collide in a scheduled 12-round junior welterweight contest at the M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool, England (formerly Echo Arena) on Saturday.

Linares, who captured world titles at featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight during a productive career, welcomes the opportunity to return to the U.K., which over the years had been a happy hunting ground for him.

“I’m so excited to be in the U.K. it’s my first time in Liverpool but I have a lot of history in London and two times in Manchester,” Linares (47-8, 29 knockout) told The Ring. “This time it’s a different opponent, different location, different ring, different fans. I’m so excited to be there.

“I think now I feel different because I feel like now I go back to my house, my town. I remember in 2015 when I fought Kevin Mitchell it was total different feeling from now, when I fought Anthony Crolla two times in Manchester it was totally different, I was more comfortable.

But first, Catterall (27-1, 13 KOs) will need to come out victorious against the second-toughest opponent of his career.

Linares (47-8, 29 KOs) has captured titles at 126, 130 and 135 pounds, but at 37, the Venezuelan boxer has lost three consecutive fights. Linares was competitive in a decision defeat to Devin Haney in May 2021.

Afterward, Linares fought twice in Russia: a 12th-round TKO loss to Zaur Abdullaev and a decision setback vs. Zhora Hamazaryan in December.

"Oct. 21 I'm back in the UK," said Linares. "I'm full of emotion and ready to give everybody a spectacular performance against a tremendous opponent, Jack Catterall.

"I just want everyone to know that I'm ready to give Jack a great boxing lesson and to continue making history in the U.K."

Catterall, while not known as a power puncher, is a career light-welterweight. Linares, on the other hand, has campaigned as low as super-bantamweight. The natural size advantage of the Englishman may be telling, and a knockout would represent an eye-catching statement to the rest of the 140lb division.

With next to no one giving Linares a chance, Catterall must not only win but win in impressive fashion if he is to galvanize public demand for the elusive Taylor rematch or secure another title shot in the near future.

He’s boxed 182 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012. Before that he enjoyed a pretty good amateur career in which he reportedly went 48-18 and captured a CYP title and reached the final of the Junior ABA’s.

Since turning pro he’s won a few regional and minor titles such as the BBBoC Central Area, WBO European, WBO Inter-Continental, and BBBoC British Super Lightweight Crowns. Catterall stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 69-inch reach which means he gives up an inch in height to Linares.

Fiaz is a tidy boxer, but with only one stoppage in 12 straight wins, his power has to be questioned. However, the Oldham-based super featherweight trains under the tutelage of Jamie Moore, who is on a terrific run of form.

Bellotti was once highly touted, but between June 2018 and August 2021, he lost five of seven fights. Granted, the Watford man was taking on the likes of Ryan Walsh, Jordan Gill, and fast-rising Raymond Ford, but how much did these defeats take out of him?

He stepped up in class in 2022 against Josh Taylor in a shot at the undisputed Junior Welterweight Title and lost a controversial split decision after dropping the champion in the eighth round and each fighter later having a point deducted,

Catterall lost his for holding in the 10th round and Taylor for hitting after the bell in the 11th. His biggest wins up to then were against the likes of Nathan Brough, Thomas Stalker, Jarkko Putkonen, Jesus Rodriguez, Joe Hughes, Tyrone Nurse, Tyrone McKenna, Ohara Davies and Timo Schwarzkopf. He’ll be facing a name fighter in Linares this weekend but there’s no doubt his opponent is in the twilight of his career at the moment.

At the peak of his powers, Linares would be more than a match for Catterall. However, he is currently on a three-fight losing streak, with his last defeat coming against relatively unheralded Armenian Zhora Hamarasyan in December. His record now stands at 47-8.

Six of those losses have been by stoppage. Never renowned for having a strong chin, Linares has largely relied on slick footwork and sharp counter-punching for success. But now his legs are not what they once were, and he will probably struggle to keep the younger, larger man at bay.

Well, turns out we’re not getting that Josh Taylor rematch yet, as Matchroom Boxing announced today that Jack Catterall will headline an October 21st DAZN show in Liverpool against Jorge Linares.

I think I fell victim to Matchroom’s exact marketing strategy for a moment there. My instinctive response was “huh, solid matchup” until someone in the Twitter comments pointed out that Linares (47-8, 29 KO) has dropped three straight.

The irony is that Catterall proved his true quality in his only career defeat. The points loss to Taylor was contentious, but if he keeps winning, then the Englishman is sure to get another world title opportunity.

Linares was a terrific fighter in his heyday, but all of his success happened in the lighter divisions and he's 38 years old now. He’s also on a three-fight losing streak and hasn’t posted a win in three-and-a-half years.

I remembered that the 37-year-old’s last foray at 140 saw him mauled by Pablo Cesar Cano. Losing to Devin Haney and Zaur Abdullaev is one thing, but he shouldn’t be collapsing down the stretch against Zhora Hamazaryan.

Catterall (27-1, 13 KO), last seen cruising past Darragh Foley, doesn’t have a fast track to a title at the moment. As controversial as his loss to Taylor was, he still fell in the rankings, meaning any championship bid in the next couple years will have to be a voluntary defense. Beating Linares and Taylor would be a great argument for an in-house clash with Regis Prograis, though.

Approaching the end of an illustrious but punishing career that began in 2002, it is unlikely that Linares will prove significantly tougher opposition than Foley. The Venezuelan veteran has claimed titles at featherweight, super-featherweight and lightweight. He burst onto the global scene by dismantling Oscar Larios for the WBC featherweight championship in 2007.

Linares (47-8, 29 KOs) was once an exceptional world champion. The Venezuelan technician captured titles at featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight, defeating the likes of Oscar Larios, Rocky Juarez, Kevin Mitchell, and Anthony Crolla along the way. This will be his first fight in 10 months.

"I always wanted to go back to the UK to make another amazing fight with the best 135lbs or 140lbs fighter," said Linares. "The best option was Jack Catterall. The motivation that I have right now is the same as it was seven or eight years ago. This is the moment. This is the most important fight."

Catterall vs. Linares is on October 21. The main card begins around 7 p.m. local time, or 2 p.m. ET. Both fighters should make their way to the ring around 10:15 p.m. local time, or 5:15 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.

The rematch with Taylor failed to materialize after several postponements and months of fraught negotiations. While Taylor went on to lose to American star Teofimo Lopez, Catterall remained on the shelf for over a year until earning a lopsided win over Australia-based Irishman Darragh Foley in Manchester in May.

Failing to capture the WBC lightweight title in 2011, the Venezuelan beat Javier Prieto in 2014 to win it. Linares also added the WBA and Ring lightweight belts to his collection by outpointing Anthony Crolla in 2016 and 2017.

In 2018, Vasiliy Lomachenko dethroned Linares. Since then, the skillful Venezuelan has gone 2-4 and he's currently on a three-fight losing streak. The 38-year-old last fought in December when he was outpointed by Zhora Hamazary.

Foley, a spirited but technically limited fighter, scarcely landed a glove on Catterall and tasted the canvas in the seventh and the ninth. All in all, the bout served as little more than an opportunity for Catterall to shake off any ring rust that might have accumulated during his period of inactivity.

Linares turned pro in 2002 at 17. He won the WBC featherweight title in 2007 against Oscar Larios and the WBA super featherweight title a year later against Whyber Garcia.

Catterall is almost sure to be too young, too big, and too strong for Linares and those facts are reflected in the odds. You should never write off quality – and Linares was a terrific fighter – but the Venezuelan has not been active and his best days are far behind him.

Linares is now 38 years old and has lost three fights in a row. He’s also moving back up from the 135 lb lightweight division to the 140 lb junior welterweight ranks. Catterall arguably beat Josh Taylor a couple of years ago but hasn’t done himself any favours with inactivity as this is just his second fight since then.

The other fights on the card feature prospects on the rise. McGrail and Hatton are near certainties to prevail in their fights, but Fiaz could find himself tested if Bellotti is able to turn back the clock. Still, I would expect Fiaz to box his way to a decision.

Linares, for his part, stressed his determination to continue competing at the highest level of the sport: “This is an amazing dream for me. I always wanted to go back to the UK to make another amazing fight with the best 135lbs or 140lbs fighter. The best option was Jack Catterall.

Catterall needs to prove the performance against Taylor wasn’t a fluke and can’t afford a loss to the aging and declining Linares. Don’t count Linares out due to his experience and power but at this point of their careers I’m expecting Catterall to come out on top.

The 38-year-old Linares was defending the WBA Lightweight Title for the fourth time when he ran into Vasyl Lomachenko in May, 2018 and although he decked Lomachenko in the sixth round he was stopped in the 10th.

The motivation that I have right now is the same as it was seven or eight years ago. This is the moment. This is the most important fight. I want to make an amazing show for the people to enjoy and to enjoy myself. We’re going to make a beautiful fight. This is the most difficult fight of my life. I need to win this fight.”

He won the belt in 2016 and also defended it against Anthony Crolla twice by unanimous decisions, stopped Darleys Perez in the ninth round, edged Luke Campbell by split decision and then downed Mercito Gesta by unanimous decision.

It will be difficult to arrest that slide here. I expect Linares to have some moments early but as the fight progresses, it becomes more one-sided and Catterall can get a second half stoppage.

After losing to Lomachenko he stopped Abner Cotto in the third round four months later. However, his hot streak ended in January, 2018 when Pablo Cesar Cano stopped him in the first round.
