Caural of Mush Records and Chocolate Industries fame returns with a historical ode to “Golden Era” Hip Hop titled “Sorry, Underground Hip Hop Happened 10 Years Ago (For Regan)”.

Taking over 450 samples of the word "YO" from his collection of rap albums (either alone or with snares, kicks, hi-hats, chords and bass tones), Caural builds the piece bar by bar - and beat by beat! - producing a rhythmic experience of memory overload for Hip Hop heads. Ras G utilized this track in his Beat Soup Vol 1 mix CD, and it has laced the sets of many other producers in the exploding L.A. beat scene.

The first new work by veteran beat maker Caural in nearly ten years is the original soundtrack for the film he co-produced, Word Is Bond, which premiered at Outfest Fusion in Los Angeles in March 2019. It’s a return to and reinvention of the style he grew across a critically acclaimed catalog on Chocolate Industries, Mush, and other foundation builders for the modern day “beat scene”. Eschewing genre in favor of sound, while celebrating Hip Hop as the blueprint of its spirit, this collection of new material is an extrapolation of the musical vignettes in the film that bring its characters to life. 

Word Is Bond is the debut film of writer and director, Alex Mastoon (Caural’s wife). Rewinding to the twilight of rap’s golden era, this evocative and music-driven short is less a narrative than a poetic meditation - a visual verse - unveiling the struggle shared by so many in the LGBTQ community afraid to be themselves: a reality largely ignored - especially in the rap world.

Born worshipping vinyl through his parents’ living room stereo, Caural (born Zachary Mastoon)based temples at his sparkly blue drum set, the Casio PT-80 and guitar. He was soon skinning his knees skateboarding with childhood neighbor Stuart Bogie (Arcade Fire, TV on The Radio, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra), and capturing youthful interpretations of early 80's Hip Hop, new wave and pop radio hits together on cassette. Playing an amalgam of jazz influenced punk in their early teens, they went on to co-found Transmission in 1991, a group which later took a more experimental turn with the addition of saxophonist Colin Stetson. 

Equally in love with rap and shoegaze, Mastoon clarified his voice with Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University and an around-the-world gamelan orchestra aboard Semester At Sea; however, it was during his final year at NYU in 1999 that he began fusing his disparate influences quite literally with a Yamaha SU700. A CD-R of his first four compositions was slipped from his coworker at the turntablism-pioneering Asphodel Records to the head of Toshoklabs, and the first Caural album had found a home. 

A critically acclaimed catalog of original material and remixes for Chocolate Industries, Mush, Plug Research, Sound in Color, and other early foundation builders of the "beat scene" followed. It was in early 2006 that he teamed up with LA emcee Busdriver to tour with everyone from Aceyalone through Deerhoof, often bloodying fingers and accidentally tearing knobs off his sampler on stage.
