When Technique Recordings bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith come with a fresh release, they've got some big expectations to fulfil. True heads will know that their roots were firmly planted back in the old skool of nineties rave culture. And, this millennium, they've built and sustained a reputation as architects of the big room style that's seen drum and bass explode in popularity. So, how are they going to live up to that this time?

Well, “The Truth” promises great things from the outset. A panoramic landscape is laid out before us, with dunes of unforgiving percussive sounds overcast by clouds of minor key tonalities and dark-child dialogue. It's the quiet before the riot, punctured by an alarm call signal flare which sparks things into life. Then the drop delivers a straight-up punch-up between bass and treble, as call and response patterns merge and collide to create an unrelenting groove. This is the EDM paradigm delivered with a junglist mentality and rarely-seen layers of subtlety to satisfy the listener as well as the raver.

“Outlaw Renegade” teleports us straight to the wild west on some distant technologically-advanced planet. The intro lays out a scene of the deserted main street where building percussion and feedback sweeps are the harbingers of the gangsta vibes about to ride through. The drop is constructed around road-hard drums, which provide a rock-solid foundation for the bassline to go to work. And that low-end drives through with sub-shattering force, creating a wave to overdose even the most hardcore bass-addict.

We all know that Drumsound & Bassline Smith deliver nothing but big tunes. The two tracks on this release serve as a reminder that underpinning that floor-filling, rave-filling, arena-filing reputation, are some seriously impressive musical and technical skills. These pieces are cinematic in ambition and attention to detail and that means they're going to be drawn for time and time again by knowledgable DJs across the globe.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith - The Truth [Friction Exclusive Premiere]

From the darkest recesses of the drum & bass world, this LP sampler from Audio signifies the last step towards his debut LP on Ram Records. Already receiving support from the scene’s heaviest, including key influencers Noisia and Beats1 mogul Zane Lowe, this next release is the predecessor for an album set to make history.

First up, ‘Overdose’ sees Audio return to his brutish, rolling bassline slashed with gritty drum loops and underpinned by quaking subs. The master of dropping ominous samples into the mix, it propels deep into a murky conundrum of sound. Steroid driven kicks bloat out the already weighty composition, sliced with distorted, elevating beat patterns and bass to create an angry, sneering and unapologetic opener. This is Audio once again pushing through like a freight train… Unstoppable.  

Next up is the Mefjus rework of Audio’s signature Ram release ‘Ulton’. His production standards were already credited at this year’s Drum & Bass Arena Awards; it’s not surprise that Audio enlisted an artist who’s received recognition for spreading his signature sound across dance floors worldwide. Mefjus’ moulds the original around the unfaltering guns of his peddled drums and wavering bassline. Flicking the switch midway, you’re thrown head first into the techy soundscape the producer reigns over.

So once more we return to the cold, nefarious sounds of Audio a final time before his album is dropped on the Ram imprint. The dial is currently turned to full throttle and it’s easy to see why the anticipation has only been growing with the release of each single.

Kosen Productions is slowly becoming one of the most defining independent drum & bass labels of 2017. They’ve proven with each of their consecutive releases that they’re able to stand up against more longstanding imprints, providing a fresh selection of talent between every single output. And with the inclusion of Kutlo, a Slovakian born producer who’s beginning his antiquated path to success, they’ve demonstrated that yet again there’s longevity within their reign.

Having already released on the likes of NeurofunkGrid, Renegade Hardware and Let it Roll, Kutlo’s addition to Kosen Production’s back catalogue of meticulously chiselled music comes as no surprise. He’s already toured extensively throughout the European scene, from his home country to the Czech Republic, seeding his music to audiences worldwide which is why fans both new and old will be eagerly awaiting his forthcoming EP on Kosen. Between its ticking, atmospheric introduction, to the guttural undertows of ‘Wasp Nest’, Kutlo ensures that the full EP drags you into his heavyweight production standard and leaves you there to drown.

Beginning the collection of records is ‘Memento’. It sets a precedent, one built through snipping hi-hats and a gradual punch line of intimidating beat patterns. Instantly you know the direction which ‘Memento’ is about throw you into, with a flipped bassline and ominous vocal snippets. Then ‘Exotherm’ dives you head first through elevating pitches of synth and crackling percussive undertows. Your aural nerves are pushed through each steppy drum rhythm before once more you’re made acutely aware of the drop that’s about to envelop you. ‘Out of Place’ clicks into gear with a tell-tale, grimy vocal sifting through its intro and a mix which gradually pulls itself together. Each lyrical melody draws you in deeper, before you’re moved into a steppy gait. And finishing the EP is ‘Wasp Nest’, a track which crackles with an LFO bassline, nodding to its namesake, and cuts deeper with every quickening layer of metallics. Kutlo leaves a lasting impression with ‘Wasp Nest’ and it’s the perfect way to wrap up an intimidating furore into the producer’s world. Kosen show that as ever, their selections are gold-standard, epitomised by each intimidating delivery Kutlo serves up.

Snow crunched lightly under his paws as he made his way across the forest floor in the still darkness. Faint light from the pale moon penetrating the depths of the woods occasionally rippled across his fur as he moved stealthily towards the perimeter. The fur around his mouth carried the stains of the many carcasses those pointed teeth had torn into as their dark-tinted red warmth slipped away beneath his fearsome frame. His blood appetite freshly sated, it was time to return to his brothers. The torn and broken light of the forest’s horizon spread across his good eye, that portal to the open plains and the mountains beyond. Smells of the forest’s life and the subtle sounds of the slowly beating hearts of its hibernating inhabitants surrounded him, each distinctly offering the promise and debt of the food they would become with the cyclic melt. His iris shrunk as he padded out into the pure white snow plain, their god, the mountain, towering above in all of its bleak awe. A frozen gust blew across his fur, carrying with it the sound of the distant bloodhowl of his kind, a twisted mournful note full of rage that resonated with his instinct, triggering adrenaline and flooding his form with anger. Quickening his pace, he darted for the pack, lips curled back against fangs that would soon let another pathetic usurper’s lifeforce spill onto nature’s coldest of blankets. The lair of the Wölfe lay ahead, his kind... connected in cruel mortality.

EATBRAIN welcome FOURWARD and his brothers to the fold, bringing a wealth of deadly talent to the label in the forms of SIGNAL and PHENTIX on production and the sharply delivered vocals of the legendary VIRUS SYNDICATE. The mass of supplicants prostrated just beyond its twisted paws, their pathetic mewling pleasantly caressing the towering feline fiend’s ears as they expressed their divine agony. Drinking up the delicious earmilk of their pain, it reclined languidly in its glorious pedestal; a mass of flesh and sinews with the fine carved bones from the countless many condemned to this realm of eternal torment. Its three eyes rolled apathetically to fall upon one particular beggar, drained of almost all remaining life from her years pennance, spent at the foot of the infernal throne, worshipping the glory of pain in all its truth and crying for salvation. The utter futility of this endeavor suddenly dawned on the great cat, as the constancy of myriad calls made for escape fell upon his ears at once. Suddenly annoyed by this ever-present sound, he reached out, spearing the pathetic being before him with a claw and flinging her from into rock and into the depths of the molten river below. His eyes watched her form ignite and fade in the heat, her soul joining others to be swept into its current on a journey to be reborn as pitiful lesser devils elsewhere in the plane. How benevolent an act, the cat thought to itself, freeing the pitiful creature from her suffering for a brief moment and more even - giving her the opportunity of such an esteemed metamorphosis. Even though the pathetic fiend she would be reborn as would hold not even a candle to his own magnificence, it would still be a marked improvement against the limits of her prior flesh. Sated by his own thoughts, he leaned forward once, rotating his vast ears to better drink in the fresh desperate energy of the remaining supplicants. Its hideous mouth opened to a wide, sharp smile, revealing cruelly serrated fangs that shone unnaturally with a umbral hue. “A reward for my benevolence,” he thought as he plucked the nearest wretch from the rock with a single talon, his pupils sharpening with focussed malevolence as he tossed them into his fur-lined maw. Satisfied, his hunger temporarily sated, there was but one thing left to do. He would take a nap.

The ZOMBIE CATS return to the label that set the fire on their ferocious project back in 2014, placing them on a fierce trajectory of furiously kinetic releases that have brought them to the present, their most pointed assault on the eardrums yet with the WORLD’S END EP on EATBRAIN. With the title track tearing out of the mouth of hell with slower bpm but highly charged energy, further establishing the newly forming neurowave genre, the cats make a bold statement from the outset. Also featuring 2 intense collaborations with masters of their art ABIS and MALUX, alongside 3 further astounding intensely fresh solo cuts, the WORLD’S END EP is a welcome return for one of tech dnb’s most respected duo’s, on one of the genres most consistent labels.
