Alongside the delicious aggressiveness that made Audio so renowned, his ‘Beastmode’ LP cracks him open like you’ve never heard him before. Fiercely powerful, yet intricately different, each cut from his debut album on the Ram Records imprint packs a very different punch whilst hitting with the same fierceness and wealth of talent.

‘Beastmode’ reflects all his output to date. Whether it’s the old-school flavor of virus, or the steppy-unapologetic riddims he’s served up for Ram, this record won’t leave you questioning who rules supreme over the genre’s murkier waters.

Whether it’s the half-time, two stepping ‘Move it Along’ or the pulsing, snarling undertones of ‘Thud’, you’re blessed with a barrage full of fresh sonic assaults. ‘Thunder Ridge’ serves as the perfect opener, a brand new record with synth-laddered foreboding intro which pushes you below the surf. Tinkling hi-hats and a distorted LFO adds shockwaves throughout the mix, submerging you even deeper. Urgent, pulsing and nastily crafted, this is Audio at his most fearsome.

On the other hand, ‘Rogue’ presents a clanking, runaway riddim that snaps its teeth with every break. Stacked between ominous build ups and jaunty samples, the second drop flairs out as angrily as the first, demonstrating Audio’s ingenious sound design.

And flipping the switch once again is ‘Sovereign’, a nod to the producer’s roots and a track that gradually builds its presence throughout. Between warbling stabs and peddled kick drum, you’re drawn by the aural nerves. Elevating beat patterns set you up for another descent into madness, through a stringently tight composition.

Featuring artists, such as drum & bass heavyweight Prolix, also take center stage. Their collaboration ‘Creatures’, alongside the revered lyricist Nuklear MC, adds a welcomed surprise. ‘Creatures’ delivers everything you’d expect and more; steroid-pumped subs, the dark overture of Nuklear and apocalyptic atmospherics.

Also featured on its weighty track listing are singles ‘Make it Happen’, ‘Overdose’, ‘Drop it Human’ and ‘Shatterdome’. They were a precursor for what was to come, which signified one of the darkest, most uncompromising productions yet on Ram Records… In all of its twenty five years of history.

It hasn't taken long for Alerstorm and Ice Stereo to establish their neuro-tinged Gradual guise as one of Technique Recordings' heavy hitters. Having introduced themselves to the label with some dark and techy flavours, they were last seen on the Summer 2016 compilation bringing the more sunlit vibe of “Falling Pieces”. So, we know they've got multiple facets to their style, which makes this EP a particularly exciting prospect.

The title track, “Industry”, is a team-up with Gradual's compatriot Impak. The evolving arpeggios and pads of the intro are dramatically counteracted by percussion which grabs hold of us and drags us to the drop. Then there's an almighty battle between warping bass, technoid stabs and pitch-bent tones to keep the energy at an absolute peak. And the breakdown, rather than offering relief from the madness, just provides an opportunity to build back into a melee of tempo-switching craziness. If you want to take hold of the dance's attention and refuse to let it go, here's one to pull out.

“Caution” immediately envelopes us in dark velvet synths, which sweep and rise, set off by hints of percussion. There's anticipation and tension right from the get go, and it feels inevitable that the drop will bulldoze all before it. Which it does. The smoothness of the intro is brutally chopped into relentlessly staccato slices, supported on a foundation of driving bass and the kind of expertly-programmed drums we've come to expect from Gradual. This is a piece of rock-solid rollage that's the ravers won't be able to resist.

The title of “Helium” makes sense straight away. A crazy pitched-up vocal riff sets the tone, and things just get more twisted from there. Old skool stabs hark back to the anything-goes experimentalism of early jungle and the drop takes that idea and runs with it. The vocal sample is subjected to all manner of sonic violence and combined with the driving bass and beats to give a constantly-shifting array of patterns. This track is beautiful insanity, demonstrating that Gradual can give us something we've never heard before while still keeping the dancefloor firmly in their sights.

“Peevish” can be summed up by one word: intense. There's just a fractional moment of peace as a calming wave of pad introduces the track but within seconds that's disturbed by a distorted gritty stab. From there the track becomes a wall of energy. It hasn't even dropped before the low-end's filled out with a lava-flow of power. Then as the full assault of the drums and bassline hit, backed by unrelenting mid-range grind, it becomes a claustrophobic tunnel of music. When it's time to dark things up, this is a tune to draw for.

It might be a free download, but there's nothing cheap about these tunes. Each one has musicality, craft and rave power and each one teaches us something new about Gradual's production abilities. If this is the direction these Spanish technicians are heading in, then there's some distinctly dangerous material to look forward to.

Under the restless blanket of a heartless night, the sculptor shifted uneasily in his atelier sleeping quarter. Slumber evaded him, every hallucination of momentary solace chased quickly into the shadows of his disquiet. Tormented by the weight of his task, to surpass the greatest creators of the past and deliver to their dynasty an icon to strike fear and awe into the hearts of the proletariat… In the depths of that darkness his mind cried out to every conceivable higher entity, light and dark – begging for the inspiration that would save him. With the encroachment of dawn, tiredness washed over him… pulling his flayed mind into a shallow sea of morbid sleep. A torrent of nightmares flooded him - visions of an amorphous entity clawing at birthing sack, a hideous soul struggling for its freedom. He awoke with a choking gasp... adrenaline flowing. Something glinted dully upon his bedside in the morning light – the razor edge of a sculptor’s blade. Picking it up and looking closely at its sharp form, covered in an obscure script. He was certain it wasn’t there in the night, it certainly wasn’t one of his… He rose from bed, moving over to the head-shaped block of clay that had awaited his touch for too long. With precision he swiftly scraped deep into the featureless façade. Gasping suddenly, he staggered back, dropping the infernal tool in horror - fear seared deep into his eyes… the clay had reacted, drawing away from the blades edge as if it was living tissue, a trickle of blood seeping out of the fresh wound. The barely shaped head was moving… writhing as if in pain, as if it couldn’t breathe – as if there was something trapped inside... He quickly picked up the blade, cutting again and again, freeing its twisted and tortured mouth, slicing away the substance piece by piece, uncovering the flesh beneath… freeing anguish-filled, bloodshot eyes that flicked around in perpetual terror. Stepping back… he looked with mouth aghast at the vision that confronted him – the head twisting to free itself from his sculptor’s block, a vision of suffering, the deep pain of reality flooding into his creation’s soul.

The absolutely huge feat which is Maztek’s forthcoming LP is finally upon us. ‘Warpath’ was rumoured since the drum & bass veteran dropped his first single, a collaboration with Aeph, on his newly created 0101 imprint, which signified a brand new creative endeavour for an artist who’s spent years crafting himself into the genre’s history.
And it’ll be yet another defining output for one of neuro’s pioneers, who’s already paved his way with a number of releases and will continue to do so with the calibre of music showcased throughout ‘Warpath’s track listing.

‘Warpath’ presents Maztek journeying back to his musical roots, whilst he brings through a host of talented artists to collaborate and feature on an epically diverse selection of records. Three years of ideas, work and struggle, ‘Warpath’ is a concoction of both old school and new school, drawing out its hip hop, reggae and drum & bass roots with a passion that modern neurofunk has afforded him. His aim was to bring back the same vibes which got him hooked on the genre, but give them a more contemporary twist, with some tracks purposefully sounding more electronic or acoustic. It’s the acoustic snares and drums prevalent across the album which help translate Maztek’s music into a live setting, which is the reason why his cuts are so devastating on the dancefloor.

First track, Maztek and Redpill’s ‘Electronic Warfare’, sets a standard, slicing deep with every stab of sonic disturbance. Next up, ‘The Dirt’ has already made the rounds alongside his other featured collaboration with Aeph ‘Trajectory’, with both tracks having already caused carnage on dancefloors since they were unmasked earlier this year, with Aeph appearing again to obliterate more speakers alongside ‘What You Got’. Maztek’s standalone delivery ‘Cheeky Dub’ helps to encapsulate the LP’s ethos, a return to the true sound which runs through the heart of all his productions. Notorious frontmen and women like MC Mota, Pendulum’s Ben Verse, Virus Syndicate, Nuklear MC and Miss Trouble also add their vocal crooning into the mix, adding perfect swathes of cool throughout the album’s offerings. Maztek & Gridlok’s ‘Gladiators’ makes a reappearance, yet another heavyweight merging of minds. Tracks like ‘Pandamonium’, ‘Bass Drop’, ‘Back to the Jungle’, ‘Come Closer’ and ‘Timeless’ further highlight the unbridled diversity of Maztek, even within the darker constraints of drum & bass. And this is one reason why ‘Warpath’ will hold up against the test of time, alongside the legacy of an artist who’s been able to draw from an intimidating array of artists for his biggest work of art to date.

The pathways of the vault reached deep into the earth, their contents hidden away from the citizens of the surface - the living - oblivious to the enigmatic codex of ever-shifting sound that modulated within. Frequencies never perceived by any still living being undulated in the darkness, refracting and fragmenting against the walls of their prison. The source was unspeakable, the existence of such a device was to be explicitly denied to the few on the periphery of the project, for the tones it produced were known to affect those who heard them with an equally enigmatic array of symptoms. The compulsions wrought from its constant and incomprehensible auditory alterations had grasped at the very core of the test-subjects’ souls, piercing the fabric of their minds and spilling their sanity across the walls of the chamber. Every conceivable test beyond the borders of morality had been performed to discern the nature of the infernal machine, but reason hesitated at the edge of the madness that emanated from the sonic maelstrom at its core. All had failed in the face of that ever-changing maw. 

The device was locked away, buried, forgotten, expunged from any and all official discussion. But an echo remained, holding on to a whisper in the subtlety of a rumour, produced not by the the codex itself, but across the tongues of the very few at the fringes of the project, tantalized by the tales of sounds so deviant as to have been buried, cast as illegal. The whisper grew and spread, a hidden frequency reverberating throughout the people, its resonance growl increasing in intensity, driving all to distraction. The populace began its search, feverishly scouring the streets and the city outskirts, the machine’s call echoing and answering as they closed in on the source… enticing them as a siren with languid promises otherworldly experience. In time, before the vast sealed entry to the forgotten crypt of the codex, a mass of supplicants surged in unison at the gateway. Ravenous, single-minded, they hurled themselves at the structure, lost in the desire to be overwhelmed, drowned in the illegal audio within. As the prison wall ruptured, the machine erupted with a vast, resounding wail, tearing at its new worshippers with sonic claws forged from pure terror, wrapped in the souls of those prior who had suffered the same fate. The acolytes were thrown backwards, faces drained in horror at the momentary comprehension of the malevolent mechanical deity they had released. Their minds were pillaged of their thoughts, brainwaves seized and entwined within the codex’s power as its sonics penetrated and passed through them with vicious, unstoppable force.

Causing unease, causing disquiet and causing some serious dancefloor damage, Cause4Concern are back to their invincible best, and those caught in their collective laser beams will never be quite the same again. Optiv (Deceased) & CZA have been an institution in drum & bass since their collective beginning back in 1999, and are in no way ready to give up on their plans of world domination just yet. 

From their London base, they have set about and conquered many different styles of drum & bass, be it on their own family of labels, or via such major players as Virus, Invisible, Quarantine, Playaz and many more. Their performances have graced all parts of the world, and have left crowds stunned and begging for more. Their artistry, versatility and quality are all hallmarks of their dedication to the scene, stretching back some 20 years. 

Since the very start, C4C have been widely respected, no matter what they have turned their hands to. Their first release was on the mighty Moving Shadow, and it wasn’t long until they put their creative heads together, and started their own seminal imprint. That label, C4C Recordings, has seen releases and remixes from some amazing artists, including Audio, Prolix, Black Sun Empire, Mindscape, Teebee, Gydra, Matrix, IHR and more, and, as artists themselves. One of their finest moments came with the issue of the Pandemic album in 2008, further cementing their reputation for awe-inspiring, high quality music. 

C4C’s sound is a story of contrasts. From the light to the dark, but deeper, and deeper still, they blend the seemingly simple with the highly intricate. Crystalline drums mix with warming, liquid bass notes. C4C are, and have never been, about any one thing, but add elements to their palette which are least expected. Their music shines with brilliance, being sharply original and experimental at all times. Deep, nearly spiritual grooves mix easily with a nose for the dancefloor. You have to listen to fully understand. 

C4C stand as warriors in an ever-changing scene. Their importance has never been more apparent than now, as they reaffirm their passion and integrity with new music and increased touring activity. They represent something pure, something unsullied in their approach to music making, with each member adding their own style to compliment the others’. 

2019 is seeing renewed activity right across the C4C spectrum. With a whole host of upcoming releases from themselves as well as brand-new material from respected artists In the scene, they continue to shape the drum & bass world with regular live and radio appearances. 
Cause4Concern continue to be one of the most exciting names in drum & bass. Watch out for their music coming to you in a number of different guises, all united by a desire and an ability to move the crowd, mind, body and soul. Causing a disturbance, causing a reaction and causing one and all to sit up and take notice.
