Disquiet Junto Project 0636: Left (1 of 3)
The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio.

Please note: While this project is the start of a three-part sequence that will unfold over the course of three weeks, you can participate in any or all three of those parts. 

Step 1: This week’s Junto project is the first in a sequence intended to encourage and reward collaboration. You will be recording something with the understanding that it will remain unfinished for the time being. Your part will be done, but more will happen. Read on.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music using any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive the piece as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in. (Keep in mind that your piece would appear panned to the left in the finished recording, after three weeks.)

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly two to three minutes in length, as described in Step 2. 

Step 4: This is important: be sure to make your track downloadable because it may be used by someone else in the next Disquiet Junto project, and then after that.

Hi, today I had a great recording session in duet with the great Bobby Rangell, from Denver, Colorado, my "to-go" flute player. It was an ambient  bass & flute gig.
The volume of certain pedals is a bit out of control, I kept tweaking that, but this is the only test recording I did, straight to stereo .I started earlier to set up all my pedals and practice a little bit, and recorded this impro as a test.
Here for you to treat, mistreat, chop, pitch, mutilate, whatever.

Nothing great happened, but it's a nice texture and sound...

modified an existing patch for this week's disquiet track - intentionally more sparse, fewer effects - leaving room for collaborators

patch with burst triggers going into plaits processed by rings, sort of call/response thing via beads, added a pulsing low end drone from a looping sample of a previous recording

Thanks so much for everybody who took the effort to provide these samples - it's been fun working with them! My approach was to select some of my favourite samples, and prepare by creating a looped version of each. I then transferred them to modules with sample playback capability on my modular system. The looped samples create a slowly moving bed with the non-looped ones triggered at different pitches with a short envelope.

This all came about as a result of something Alan Bland mentioned on the Junto Slack. He pointed out that my having misspelled Disquiet as “Disquier” in the December 19, 2019, project title made him think of “Dischoir,” a possible Junto project. Process was fairly on the nose with a literal interpretation of the assignment - three separate oscillators, each going through its own envelope, manually triggered to create overlapping sequence 1-2-3-2. Manually playing the filter in accordance with general brightness level increasing from 1-2-3 then back down from 3-2 again. Some randomly phasing modulation and soaked in resonating feedback.

I went for a sample based approach for this - the two sources used are

* BBC Sound Effects (http://bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk) / Cine Projectors / An 8 mm projector running at 24 f.p.s.
* sfsma / PianOrgaN Film Books of Incidental Music, Vol. 1: Grotesque and Comedy Music (https://www.sfsma.org/ARK/22915/pianorgan-film-books-of-incidental-music-vol-1-grotesque-and-comedy-music/) / Jewish-Irish Comedy Theme (http://www.sfsma.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Grotesque-2.aif)

I then played these through my modular system, manually fading in and out and slowing down, combined with live contact mic noises and ambiance from a background loop (also from BBC Sound Effects, lost the exact reference), all into generous reverb.

Recording the sounds outside the top floor window at 7AM on Friday morning with my DR-05X - minimal processing (EQing only). Mainly birdsong, light distant traffic, and some faraway sounds of the rubbish bins being collected.
